I would opt for the 572 (or bigger) for the torque and low rpm, plus you can get away with a less aggressive valvetrain for long life. I know nothing about them, but want to follow this thread to see what folks think of the Indy Cylinder head Legend stuff. We have a lot of Indy dealers on hear, so you wouldn't have to deal with Indy direct. Fast68plymouth is one, Todd Marsh I believe is also.

I have a 528 hemi with Legend heads for sale in the hemi section. Probably just what you are looking for. Has less than 4000 miles. I can deliver. PM me- your inbox is full!

Either one is good. If you were using Indy heads I believe you would use their Hi-Po's. I would rather use the Edelbrocks. 700 hp with a pump gas, flat tappet, single 4 bbl, 528/572 is easy. I've put a couple together for my buddies and they are great. The new blocks look good. I buy my components from Ray Barton. It will be fun.

I am just finishing up my 540 that has been a work in progress for a long time. After talking to several Hemi builders, I went with Ray Barton for the reciprocating assembly and a few other parts. Mostly because of his involvement with the World blocks like I was using.

I have been told more than once that the 572 creates a noticeable amount more windage that would need to be dealt with. So I went with the 4.25 stroke.

biggrin The tires won't hold it anyway. drive

I built a 572, but I wanted over 800 hp out of it. A 528 will do what you want easily.

I'm building a pump gas 540" hemi for my dad's car. Unported MP/Edelbrock casting heads, Vanke modded street hemi intake w/ two 750 Carter AFBs, custom hyd. roller. Should be around 600 or better hp in a very mild package.

I would do a 572, or even a 605. There is no replacement for displacement. And more inches doesn't cost a dime more in this instance.

I'm going to assume you have a new block with 4.490 bore, correct? If so look at either a 4.250 or 4.375 stroke crank with the BB Chevy rod journal sizes and use a set of 7.100 long BB Chevy style forged steel H beam rods with 10.5 to 1 compression with iron heads or maybe even up to 11.0 to 1 with aluminum heads for pump gas thumbs The heads, exhaust, intake and carbs and cam will deteremine what the exact HP and torque will be up
EDITED
The deciding factor on the stroke length will probally be if you want to run a internal oil pickup or a external oiling system. The longer strokes, over 4.375, especially with the stock Mopar rod journals sizes and stock type OEM or aluminum rods, force you to use a exteranl oiling system to make the rods not hit the interanl oil pickups shruggywork scope

And here is my 605 Hemi from last year I drove over the summer and ate a cam lobe, and I just finished it up with a roller ca this time and it goes back in the car this weekend hopefully.....

The Indy HiPo heads are probably the best bang for the buck if you go 572 or larger. Mine flowed 443 corrected at .700.

The Edelbrock Victor Jr's are similar and you don't have to put up with Indy. When I got my Indy HiPo's the installed height was so far off I thought it was impossible. When I got my Edelbrocks I said wow, this is nice.

Re: 528 0r 572 hemi build - 04/21/16 04:43 PM

I went with Stage V heads and had Modern CNC port them. I haven't built the motor yet but the heads seem to be good quality castings. As far as size I'm doing a 540. 4.375 bore and a 4.5 stroke. I can bore to 4.4 and 4.5 in the future if or when required.

I went 572" for street/strip/pump gas, and I am well pleased. 10.5 to 1 , Stage V heads by MCH , and a mild solid roller spec. by Dwayne Porter.
I am still playing with intake and carburetor choices.

Talk to Tim Banning at FHO. I'd go with the 572.
