Which rearend lube & how to seal a Dana? - 02/03/09 05:58 PM

I'm changing the fluid and putting the cover back on. It seem like no matter what I do the rear starts to seap about half way thru the season. What are your secrets to keeping the fluid in the rear?
Thanks Mike

I have 2 ways that always work 1. Paper gasket with Indian Head gasket sealer (little brown bottle stuff is great) or if you use RTV. Apply a nice bead and loop around each bolt hole. Let it start to dry alitte then bolt on the cover.

Also make sure your cover is straight and the area around the bolt holes is not deformed (raised up).

I use RTV but it only lasts 1/2 of the season!

i thought dodge had a TSB about synthetic gear oils and standard rtv not working well on the trucks. anyway i'm using rtv with syn and have no leaks, but did follow the recomendations of some of the posts above.

What RTV are you using? Also is it a stamped steel cover?

We use Ultra Black RTV with the heavy Aluminum cover that has the bearing cap supports built in. Never had a leak.

As far as fluid, Mobil 1 75w/90. (4.10 w/spool)
