Timken vs. Koyo bearings? - 02/17/16 04:10 PM

What are your thoughts on the quality of Timken vs. Koyo bearings? Looking at bearing kits for a Dana 60 and there's a pretty big difference in price...Timken being more expensive. Are they worth it?

As you might know I'm a 27 year Toyota technician and almost all Toyota transmissions use Koyo bearings and I the only bearing failures I see are from fluid loss or contamination.
Toyota trucks use Koyo bearings on their carriers and go 300K without any troubles twocents
I use them in my rebuilds without hesitation up

Chip, FWIW I worked in the bearing industry for 26 years. Years ago I would have said Timken hands down but because of overseas competition Timken now makes all of their small bore bearing overseas as well. With that said KOYO will be fine but I personally would still buy the Timken. lol

Really? Mine only shows the outer bearing for the 8 3/4

I used a Koyo from a part store when I made my setup bearing last time, it was a mistake on my part. When I pressed the Timken on it was slightly different depth, didn't kill the pattern, but went from a perfect pattern to a just OK pattern. The Koyo has less rollers in it. So I need to get a Timken this time, and rehone (PITA)

We make die parts for Koyo often. They own Timken now.

Well I just did this setup. I honed an older Timken bearing, installed it, and measured my depth. I then pressed on a newer Timken bearing and it was .003 deeper in the case. The pattern was still ok so I installed it.

There are two grades of Timken bearings. The parts store verity which are from over seas and the US made one's. The will have the same part numbers but from different places. Take the timken part number ad go to an industrial supply house if you want the US made ones. Or to an aviation supply place. The US made ones are more expensive I know I replace the axle and carrier bearing in my Dana and it was really high.

I've had only 2 experiences with Koyo. One was oversized and the other under.By the thousandths. The races also had scratches. Don't know if it was returned or new.

The last Timkens that I bought were made in Eastern Europe.

Re: Timken vs. Koyo bearings? - 02/18/16 02:44 AM

Timken use to offer a lot of thier Timken tapered roller wheel bearings in many different quality of bearings with the same part number except the suffix. I complained once about the price of a set of wheel bearings on my small single engine airplane when I had the fisrt annual inspection done on it, the shop charged me around $38.00 for the bearing and race, the same part number at the local auto parts store was $8.00 work The auto parts bearing had a A suffix and the airplane bearing had a G suffix on it shock The FBO shop mechanix explianed the difference was in how close the tolerances where between the two, .0010 compared to .0001 work
That airplane took off and landed at 85 MPH + and the tires where very small in diameter so the wheel bearings on landing would go from a dead stop to real fast in a very short period of time work I put a bunch of time in that airplane, 1100+ hours and a lot of take offs and landings in that time and never had another wheel bearing failure after the first annual, I did remove and repack them every 100 hours per the factory recommended servicing thumbs That airplane had sat in northern CA for in a hangar 18 months on the north end of San Fransisco bay area for 18 months before I bought it so the salty air moisture content up there may have cause the pitting on the bearings and races confused I now buy the recommended bearings from the manufacture for that specific application up

Chip,
I've seen issues with Koyo bearings in the transmissions in the dealership. I'm sure Chrysler's policy of "The cheapest bidder" has something to do with it, but I would still feel better with Timken. Like you, and all of the Moparts people have told me, after all of the investment that has been made into our toys, are you going to cheap out now for a set of axle bearings?

Re: Timken vs. Koyo bearings? - 02/18/16 05:04 AM

The biggest reason that Tenken aviation bearings are so high is that they have to have an FAA PMA certification.

Re: Timken vs. Koyo bearings? - 02/18/16 05:19 AM

They don't always need a PMA anymore for aircraft, just need to meet a spec or industry standard
