Help with cam choice, 499 with -1s - 01/17/16 06:22 PM

I was planning on going custom, but since I have a summit discount code and plan to place an order with them shortly, I was seeing if there is anything off the shelf that would work well.

499" low deck, 13:1 on E85, Indy -1 heads (flow #'s attached), 1.7 Jesels, 4500 Indy intake, 1150 Dominator, TTI step headers, 4800-5000 converter and 3.55s with a 28" tire. This is in a 70 Charger that I'd guess to be 3800-3900# with driver. I realize the converter and gearing may not be optimal, but I like to drive it. I'll be running the Comp 892 lifters in an unbushed stock block. Thanks.

Your way better off to call Comp and Bullet and ask them, you can get Comp to grind you a custom cam and order it through Summit work scope twocentsI would look for a cam with betwen 265 to 280 degrees at .050 and lobes that will work well with those rocker arms, LSA of no more than 110 and installed at 104 to 108 intake lobe center up
You do know that some of the parts that go into a motor like your building shouldn't be the cheapest ones you can find, right work

Of course. I pretty much always go custom on the cam and converter. Perhaps I'm just trying to make conversation since I can't order much until Tuesday when the bank is open for me to deposit $$. shruggy

Do you have valve springs already? If so, how much lift can they handle? I have a few cams on the shelf that would work for that combo, just need to know how much lobe lift you can handle.

Andy, I'll shoot you a PM with that info.

I have a used Bullet cam that is 271@050 with .460 lobe lift so with the 1.70 rocker arms it would be .780 gross lift. Once you subtract lash and deflection you'll be around .750 net lift.

I also have a new roller from Scotty Brown which is 270/274. I'd have to double check the lobe lift but I think it is also right around .750 net lift with your 1.70 rocker arms.

Either one of these cams would make good power with your combo. I used the Bullet cam in my 470 and it was a little bit too big for me, but you have more inches and a lot more compression so it should be a strong cam for you.

Is this drag race only or street/strip? If street/strip I'd stay smaller with the cam. If drag only you could go a bit bigger, especially with a 5000 stall converter.

Andy, it's a street/strip car, primarily street.
Let me know what you find out on the cam from Scott Brown. What combo did you have these spec'd for? Size wise they're in line with what my cylinder head guy predicted I'd end up with. I wouldn't mind more lift, but I worry about the cutaway lifters in a non-bushed block.

Andy, I'd be interested in a pic of either cam card if you have them. Do you know if either is ground on a smaller base circle? I'm sure that'd help with the oil galley not become exposed.
