Re: SSAH - Hemi Thread 2016 - 01/27/16 11:29 AM

We have been issued Gator tags so I will be making my first trip over there, with Island Hemi's permission of course. RMRE now has a red team car to go with SECRETARIAT and it will be in the stacker. Somebody's parade getting rained on!! Throw in Lil Joe's car lot, D4 looking good. Lloyd would make it better. If Cake shows, we may have a dozen. MATS is same weekend and that's our usual trip but no Quake to calm out there.

Re: SSAH - Hemi Thread 2016 - 03/08/16 04:43 AM

9 eavy hitters will go at it for class eliminations next week at the Gatornationals. Class eliminations (Tim Hebert Memorial Chootout)at the Jegs Sportnationals in Bowling Green Kentucky in May will be awesome. Look for 15 plus cars there. Of Course the Hemi Challenge at the U S Nationals will have 20 plus. The Dutch Classic in October is always big and exciting with great conditions for fast times. A couple of new players will show up this year so some cars that haven't been out in a long time will reappear with new owners and drivers.

I'll hold off the names on the two new guys for now. Both of the cars have raced before with well know drivers and plan on racing at BG. One well known car will not be back, but the overall number should be about the same. Newcomers Berry & Warburton will be at BG for sure. It would be nice if Erik Jones could get Eric Bell's hemi done so he can move into the class. Maybe someone could talk Gary Moore into putting his Hemi back into the frame rails of his Cuda

Heard threw the local race grapevine in South Carolina there is a super stock car hiding in someone's shop being built. They say they have lots of mopars but it was not confirmed to be a super stock car. They said they saw a car being unloaded out of a trailer at night time and the scoop said hemi on it. The guy said they are pretty low key or "secret" and they would not let him come past the fence that was around the shop and ran him off. Shop has no names on it and there is a huge toterhome and trailer on the side of the shop. No one can seem to find out who or what's in there. White and black are the colors on the car that was in the trailer. Didn't know if anyone knew what was going on down here. Thanks

Yep, There is one in South Carolina. It is not a new car, but recently had the chassis updated at a well know chassis shop. I'm not sure you got the colors correct though. If it is one and the same it should be at Bowling Green for the "Chootout".

Re: SSAH - Hemi Thread 2016 - 03/31/16 03:26 PM

Just depends on how much you are buying vs how you are building?

Competitive motors are $40000-$60000 and then theirs the maintenance of it all which gets expensive as well. Dropped valves are common place since titanium is illegal. Again, thats if your running a shootout motor. You could building something far more conservative if you cared more about winning the event vs. winning class shootouts.

ANY properly constructed race car is built as light as possible so the extra weight (ballast) needed can be placed where it is most advantageous. The folks who build high end Super Stock cars are especially good at it.

Mopar is back again to sponsor the Hemi Shootout at the US Nationals at Indy. I talked to Dale Aldo at Joliet last week and they are working on the new poster for the racers. Mopar is hoping for a big turnout of Hemi cars. Get your cars ready, it should be a great show!

Well we have 17 today and I know of 8 more that should go so this looks to be a good turnout. Wayne would be make 26. So I would get a bye in 2nd round. !!!!

FYI In an attempt for the Islanders to keep up with the Krazy Kajuns they have bought a bad azz hot rod. The only time I ever had a win against that car was when it rolled the beams and went red. Still out performed me in ET. New sheriff in town and lives on an island. LOL

Re: SSAH - Hemi Thread 2016 - 09/12/16 03:03 AM

Lol...reclassified to what?? I'd bet the none of them care as the shootout is why they are there.

You don't build a shootout car to worry about what is essentially a bracket race.

Re: SSAH - Hemi Thread 2016 - 09/12/16 03:37 AM

A bracket race? Really? Last time I checked, which has been about 50 something times now, the U.S. Nationals is about the farthest thing you could get from a bracket race. Do you really think a guy with a $100,000 drag car wants to pay all that money for entry fees and travel and on and on to NOT qualify? More than half the cars in the field didn't qualify for the race! Do you think that's fair to the SS/AH guys? NHRA needs to re-think what it takes to make these cars run that fast. The need to soften the index where the slower SS/AH cars can qualify for the biggest drag race of all time.

Tell your Dad thank you as well.

New business. NHRA D4 is having a national open on Nov 18 & 19. Record runs, grade point and class eliminations. Let's call it the WHO DAT CHOOTOUT for now so mark your schedule. So far the purse is already $2500 so let's get them crankshafts and valves back in and plan on coming down. Sea level in November, are you kidding me. My junk is in Arlington Monday for upgrades. Super Stock eliminator is exactly a bracket race, unless you come up against a car in the same class, then it's heads up.

Re: The "Dutch" - 10/09/16 09:08 PM

Results for the second round of the Hemi Shootout at Maple Grove Raceway :

Wendell Howes .313 reaction, 11.568 seconds, 77.72 mph - WIN
Bucky Hess - disqualified

Jimmy Daniels .074, 8.288, 160.54 - WIN
Gary Wolkwitz -.060, 8.356, 156.84 - red light start

Steve Comella ..039, 8.442, 145.89 - WIN
Bye Run

Although this is an unofficial explanation, I was told that the disqualification for Bucky Hess had to do with his staging.
Apparently he decided that he was staged crooked after he had entered the pre-stage beam and then backed up. As the explanation continued, it seems that you cannot back out of a pre-stage beam without the direction of the starter. Only the starter can authorize a racer backing out of a pre-stage beam.

I hope this explanation is accurate and correct.

The new 2017 Mopar Speed Calendar is available at your local Dodge dealers. Larry Hill in his A/SA 440 Cuda made Mr. February and my Hemi Barracuda made Mr. October. Pretty cool. Hope to see everyone at the Gators. Merry Christmas everyone. Dyno

2017 Tim Hebert/Big Joe Teuton Hemi "Chootout" at the Jegs Sportsnatinals.

Last year was a great race won by Steve Kent over Doug Fazzolare. my name is Bud Cope Jr, I purchased an older Jim Pancake Barracuda, trying to put a 440 stroker motor in it and did not realize that I would need a pan with access for steering, it has a motor plate, does anyone have a used one that I can purchase, I know I can have one built but time is running short, Clinton Cranston thought he had one but it was for the Indy block. phone number at home 724-785-7391. Thanks. Bud

Re: SSAH - Hemi Thread 2016 - 06/16/17 02:19 AM

So what is the difference in a Indy block? I thought they all used the same oil pan as the Mopar big block and hemi engines. From the info given, do you need a oil pan that has the tube through the pan for the drag link to go through? If so, that might be car specific as engine placement determines that.

So if that is the John Tedder car it probably is not up to the lasted AH standards. Is he going to update the car or just keeping it a AA car as it was in the past? I would love to see a picture of the car!!!

I raced with John Tedder back in the 1970's I was one of many people that help build that car and raced it with him!!!!! Brings back a lot of memories 👍👍👍👍

Another kick in the teeth by Tony. As of right now, it appears the Hemi Challenge may not be held this year, the 50th anniversary of the Hemi Super Stock cars, at Indy. There are efforts to get NHRA and Mopar to have the challenge. If it matters, the thread on Class Racer has more details and information if you'd like your opinion to be heard.

Anyone one know the expected turnout of A/H cars for this years Dutch Classic at Maple Grove in 2 weeks? Was hoping it would be higher, being the 50th and all.

Yes, that is a great paint job. Wish more people would paint their race cars up old school style.

Do the guys who race this class keep rebuilding their old cars every few years, or do they sell them after a few seasons and build another one from scratch?

most of the guys who are on the list. " the regulars " have had these cars for years. I do know that
Jimmy Daniels car is his dads, and the car was Ray Bartons
Gary Wolkowitz has had his car for years
Steve Comello's Dart is one of the original Super Stock LO23's that his dad bought brand new. But he brought the Cuda this year.
I believe Jim Pancake has had his car a long time

some of the cars this year were brought out because of the 50th and they arent regulars to the shootout, Dan Morgans is an original LO23 car also

The final Hemi challenge of the year will be at Maple Grove raceway at the Div1 Dutch classic this weekend.

If you get a chance, please check out my online article of event coverage from the 2018 Dodge Hemi Challenge. There is a bunch of pictures, and some captions with comments from the drivers. Thanks very much!

Nice job on the article Arvid!

A memory from several years ago came up in the feed elsewhere, I thought...why not share and keep the thread going.

Left to right this is me, Jimmy Junior, Jim Daniels and Dale Aldo helping Jim accept the gold and the big bucks for his win at the Jegs Northern Sportsnationals.

It was always an education just being around these cars and racers, I miss having the opportunity to ask a question or two.

Great article, Arvid! I didn't make it to Indy until Saturday, so I missed most of the fun for the first time in 10 years. frown Thanks for helping live it though! up
