Crankshaft question

Crankshaft question - 01/29/09 11:34 PM

I would like to know from the guys who build them which setup would you run and why?Which will need more clearancing?I would like to stay with an internal pickup. The motor will never see 6000rpm(unless I am feeling stupid).

I have a 4.40 stroke crank for use with chevy rod journals and a 6.70 chevy rod that will work with my pistons.

I have rods and pistons for a 4.25 stroke crank with mopar rod journals.I can get the crank from K1 technologies from DRAM if I go that route.

The motor will be pump gas friendly with ported E heads and either a solid or hyd roller if I can find the extra money.Induction will be a street dominator with 850 holley or possibly a tunnel ram with 2 750's.

It will be in a heavy c body with 3.55 gears and a custom converter to match the setup once it is decided. The goal is a torque monster with whatever hp shows up.Shifting likely from 5000-5500 depending on setup.

I know I need more head flow and could use a bigger carb/intake but if I go with a single four it has to stay under the hood.

With the exception of the crank(if I go 4.25),rods(if I go 4.40),cam,and converter I have all of the other parts ready to go.

I may upgrade to some sr heads waaay down the line but I have to run what I have for now.
EDIT:compression will be 10.5-1 +/- .25

Thanks

I got carried away with info and did'nt make it clear what I was looking for.Which crank setup will give more room for the internal pickup? Will I need to do any block clearancing?

the Mopar rod size rods with the 4.25 stroke made the H beam steel rods hit a 1/2 pick up on the last one I did I do have a 400 motor with a 4.30 stroker with BB Chevy H beam rods that I run a 3/8 internal pickup with no apparent oiling issues so far shifting at or above 7000 rpm at the track and and on the street so I have another motor with the Mopar rods sizes, 4.375 stroke and Manley H beam steel rods, there is no way the internal would work so it has a external dual line system on it The 4.4 crank with the BB Chevy rod size is a crap shoot in my book, if you got the parts mock it up, if not its your choice. It sounds like your trying to save money, if I was you I would buy one of 440 Sources balanced kits, 4.375 stroker with 10.5 to 1 compression and sell all of the other parts and get started

It's better to put a single line external line in..That way you won't have any clearance problems or Leaning Oiling Problems..With any of the strokers you will have problems. Also pan options are harder...

I am limited to the factory c body pan unless someone knows of an aftermarket pan with steering clearance.A 3/8 pickup will be fine.I have spun 440's a lot higher with a 3/8 pickup and never had a problem.
I may just go ahead and run the mopar width 4.25 and sell the 4.40 crank.
You are correct on the saving money part.I got the pistons(new) for $300 and the rods(used) for $200.The only full price item will be the crank.
I plan to use the pan setup you made for me CAB.
