My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 01/29/09 10:47 PM

For those that were at our Mopar event, you might recall me talking on the PA about the viper I had being built at UnderGround Racing. Well, I finally got it this past monday. I got to go play around with it today. Out of all the cars I've ever driven, nothing even comes close to this thing. It's amazingly civil around town, but has enough power to roast the tires at will regardless of the MPH. I took dad for a ride in it the other night. He really liked the car (outside of getting in/out of it). I plan on taking this car to as many mopar events as I can. If dad goes in the imperial, I plan on following in this. The car is currently set on the lowest setting, which puts 1000hp at the rear wheels. I have a few little changes I'm going to make to the car to finish it out, but here she is:

Hope to see you guys some this year!

Sweet! I assume Elston exhuast is still installing the turbos?? He does a sweet job. Saw one up on the lift one time and I could not believe he could fit all that piping in there. He is an artist!

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 01/29/09 11:17 PM

Yes 1000hp, on pump gas too . I got 18mpg driving on the interstate monday. The car is an auto. If it were a stick, this setup is good for over 1500-1600 at the wheels. With the auto, it's limited to about 1300 due to the converter.

Still working on the other issue with inspection, looks like I got it worked out

I drove the car home from UnderGround on monday. It POURED for 2 days here. Today was the first day I could take it out. I've given about 15 rides to people so far. Just haven't had time to do video. I've had a lot people asking what it sounds like, so will be working on that hopefully on Saturday.

It is still IRS. I know I can get into the 8's easily, just a matter of how far I want to push it

OMG...your car is to die for I think I just blew a load . Seeing this is not helping me talk myself out of wanting to aquire one of those cars. I can see it already- car would be in the driveway for a month, Underground Racing would be on the phone and another financial meltdown begins.
Congrats on the finished product

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 01/30/09 05:14 AM

I put 6 figures into another tuner on a viper truck I have and was very disappointed with. UGR is fixing that abortion right now. I told UGR exactly what I wanted the car to do. They told me how much it would cost, when it would be done and kept me updated throughout. There were no surprises, nothing but incredible customer service. I will get them to build me another car down the road. It's so rare, sadly, to get TRUE customer service from a shop these days. We've gotten used to vendors who just want to take your money and could give a crap less what you think. These guys were 100% awesome and I can't imagine sending a project to anyone else.

The best deal going for a "budget" is to buy a 97-99 GTS (good rods/pistons) and throw a paxton on it. Don't quote me, but I think you can get around 900 rwhp out of their setup and total build cost is 15k. You can buy a GTS for mid-high 30's right now, lower mileage for 40's.

If you want to get something done on this level, buy someone's car that is already done, will be A LOT cheaper. I know where a car is that is built VERY similar to mine, but it is an 05 convertible. Car ran 8.53 at rockingham, I saw it with my own eyes. It's an auto as well. It has the best of everything. That's quite a bit more, around 125-130k.

Well, it used to be red. The 96's were the blue/white cars. They didn't make a blue 98 . I gave the nephews a ride today and scared them quite a bit. Sadly, I start business travel tomorrow and won't be able to drive for a week.

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 04:32 PM

Weather was nice today and I was in town for once, so off the track I went. It's the 1/8th mile track I used to own. I drove the car in, put 1/4 tank of 112 in just to be on the safe side. I drove up to the scales and weighed the car. With me in the car, along with various crap I had, the car came in at 3820. That was a totally full tank of gas and full methanol. I weigh about 170lbs right now. The scales might be a tad off as they were having a little issue, but I imagine this is pretty close.

I had no clue what to expect. I'm running on the 20" HRE's with Nitto's. The car is set on low boost. I figured I'd just walk it out and try to get into the boost around half track and see what happens. I couldn't make myself do a burnout, I like the paint too much . I just drove up, staged up and off we go.

The first two runs were fun. I went through first with no boost, got into 2nd and the boost came on pretty quick, too quick. So quick that I had the [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean] end break loose big time and point itself towards the wall. I quickly let out of the gas and she straightened right up. I made 8 passes today, some variation of that happened on about 6 passes haha.

I ran the car 3 passes at a time with no waiting. The car never got over 185 degree's. My best pass of the day was as follows:

60': 1.808
330': 4.605
1/8th: 6.702
Mph: 119.06

On this pass I got it into 2nd pretty quick and slowly built the boost in and got it into 3rd. The car was running like a mother on the back half. Car was as smooth as silk. Never gave me an issue, never darted, just straight as an arrow. I was very pleased with this run. As you can see from the 60' time, I have a ton of ET left. I made a bunch of runs in the mid-low 7's at over 110mph. All of those runs, the car either spun the tires in 2nd or it went sideways and I had to get her straight. I have no doubt in my mind that I'll go into the 9's as soon as I hit a 1/4 mile track.

I drove the car out, went to the grocery store, got my food and came home. Never a spit or sputter. To run like that on the lowest setting the car has, under the conditions I had it in, very excited. I'm going to play on street tires for awhile and worry about the slicks later.

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 04:53 PM

Nice car for sure. When you get it dialed in maybe you and Lee Saunders can have some heads up racing. His is a Twin turbo automatic Jason Heffner car and ran 7.99 on pump gas at Memphis last year.

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 05:26 PM

His car is a race car, mine is a street car. Don't get my wrong, his car is incredible, however, it has been heavily modified. It can pass the street car tests it does, but it's far from what a normal viper is. I have a small cam, small intercooler, stock oiling system and normal valvetrain. The converter I have is made for the street. My car was meant to be a street car first and race car second. I can't take my car over 6200 with the oiling system I have. His car has a glide, mine a normal TH400.

His car is in a different league from mine. What he has done is just amazing. I've put well over 1000 miles on my car in a month and I've been out of town half of those days with work. I drive the car all the time.

Mom wasn't too happy about the car going to the track. Needless to say I'll leave her out of the loop once the radials go on

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 06:06 PM

Whats the deal about not exceeding over 6200 rpm? Are the higher rpms a problem in that engine with oiling?
Posted By: topfueldart

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 06:08 PM

Very cool, what ET is the car actually legal too? 8.50 it appears.

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 06:24 PM

Cage is certified to 8.50.

As far as the oiling goes, it's the biggest weak spot on a viper. I'm sure I could push it past that point, but why take the chance? I'm not trying to set any records. I'm enjoying my car and will push it within reason. I'll run some 1/4 mile stuff later on and put up some 8's. Right now I want to run 9's in the 1/4 on street tires

I've been "out of it" for years and am amazed how fast some of these are. When you say "glide" and "TH400" do I underatand you are adapting GM turbo hydro 400? Does that mean the stock Mopar trans are a POS?

Re: My UnderGround Racing Twin Turbo Viper - 02/22/09 08:27 PM

The car was converted to an automatic before I bought it. The T-56 these cars came with has been proven strong. They have been in the 7's on a stock rear suspension, full weight and a 6 speed.

they wouldn't be in the Cadillac LeMans cars if they were junk. if you did have a stick just imagine the type of clutch you'd need. my leg goes numb just thinking about it lol
