Motor location, plate and steering rack?

Motor location, plate and steering rack? - 01/28/09 06:23 AM

Hi guys

Can you help me out a little. I just realized that my Charger motor sitting way more on right side from center of car. Is it normal and why is that? Is it only for steering gear? If I measured then on right side there is about 2,7" from subframe to motor side and on left side there is about 5" gap from left side on frame and motor side. So it makes about 3" motor sitting out from car center on right side.
Second question is about front motor plate. Do you guys leave original motor mounts and use them with motor plate or you take them away when installing front motor plate?
About steering rack. Do anyone use steering rack on he`s B-body? I really want to change old and heavy steering gear to rack. Main problem install...seems to me that oil pan causing some problems installing rack?

Motors are offset and is clearance for steering. The motor plate I use is 5/16" thick. You can't bend it.As for a rack and pinion I would suggest an aftermarket setup. You can check out MagnumForce or Alterkation as a source for a K member.Being Europe though probably be costly. Here's a pic of my Cuda I used to own.

the factory motor mounts are eliminated when using a plate. less weight and more room for other stuff.

this pic shows the Alterkation mentioned by 7074cuda.

it's not cheap but makes plenty of room for headers, and dropped 85 lbs off the font end, oil pan choices are greater. it can be ordered with or without motor mounts (i chose without since a plate was to be used). and compared to the old suspenion, it drives like a new car.

If this is a race only car you might want to move
the engine back to the centerline of the car, it
puts more weight on the centerline. Also if you
do use the motor plate it is advised that you add
torque reaction rods to hold the engine when you
launch and can help save you a tailshaft

Thanks for answers!
I cant use aftermarket K-frame because of class rules where I race. K-frame have to be original. But I really want to use steering rack, much lighter, takes less room etc. BUT problem is Charger`s steering knuckles. They are not front but back of knuckle. So I need to install steering gear behind K-frame. There comes anouther problem - oil pan what is only 1/2" behind K-frame so there is no room. Seems only possebility is to cut and weld oil pan a bit for makeing room for steering rack?
But where you install motor plate? I mean do is stands between block and timing cover and do it fasten to motor same bolts what holds timing cover to motor block?

Thanks
Georg

a torque rod mounted to the motor and the chassis lengthwise to stop forward and rearward movement

you may have a little more luck with a unisteer kit. not sure what year you have but they make a kit for 68-72 b-bodies www.unisteer.com
