Alternator upgrade?

Alternator upgrade? - 10/24/15 06:50 PM

I'd like to upgrade the alternator on my street/strip small block 69 Dart. Currently I'm running a square back two field and would like to up grade this winter while I'm finishing up my new engine build. the car has a Magnafuel 275 pump and a Digital 6 ignition, no electric fan or water pump but would like to have some extra capacity if I want to upgrade later.

What's a good simple alternator up grade?

Thanks.

Use the Denso mounting kit. You can either buy a new Denso alternator or find one in a wrecking yard or alternator place.

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/24/15 09:20 PM

I am using a GM CS130 alternator. It is one of the best things I have ever done to my car no questions. It charges at 14.5-14.7 with a 5" crank pulley at idle. I have electric fans(2) WP, and Fuel Pump.

I am running it to a continuous duty relay so my kill switch will work and it feeds into my power distribution point. I have been real happy with how it has all worked.

HOLY COW!!! I could run all the accessories on any Mopar that I have and do some welding on the side with one of those...but, I can't see it for a once a month bracket beast. I will start haunting the local yards for a Denso.

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/24/15 09:43 PM

my street/strip 'cuda uses a Tuff Stuff alternator. looks factory, mounts on the same brackets & connects to the factory regulator & pumps out 100 amps so it charges up quickly. no complaints from me.

works fine for me from different computers as well as on my phone. You might have something cached in your router that is causing the problem.

I ran one of their older Ford case converted 140 Amp models. It was what I needed for 2 fans and H4 headlights. Put out 95A at idle.

I think Andy can hook you up with a connector and how it's hooked up. I got the connector when I salvaged the alternator off a Toyota pickup.
Andy will hook you up with all the brackets and I think he even makes a trick pulley for it too. Just check the AR Engineering website for everything you need for the conversion.

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 02:42 AM

If 120 amps is all you need, then look for a Denso alternator from a '89-'91 Dodge Ramcharger. I bought one from this company, works great. It's new, and its reasonably priced. It works with the standard Mopar external regulator.

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 03:20 AM

I use the 14611 Denso off ebay, it was cheap and shows 14 volts in my car at all times, best charging setup I've ever owned. AR-Engineering sells the wire pigtail, motor plate mount, and pulley for it.
I don't have a good photo of mine but this is Butch's photo...

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 05:36 AM

Do you have to use a regulator ? I thought you just ran a single wire back to the battery ? Gary

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 04:50 PM

The Denso is internally regulated and one goes to 12+ and one to keyed 12+ iirc.........

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 04:51 PM

I don't use a regulator with the 14611, it's internally regulated as far as I know. It's only 60 or 70 amps but it sure does the job.

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 05:06 PM

On the 3-wire harness:

Red is not used.
Blue goes to the large post on my starter relay(always hot).
Green goes to a switched 12 volt fuse.

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/25/15 05:44 PM

Ya, I didn`t have the connector so I ran one to constant 12+ and the other to a switched 12+ and as you said, the third wasn`t needed.......

East coast makes the mini alternator in 1 wire and with the pullys you need.

Will it work with the brackets I already have?

Be interesting to hear feedback. They offer a high output 4 Runner alternator. I messaged them to see if it is a direct replacement for the Denso 210-0106 used in Any's kits. I want to go electric fan/water pump/EFI and want a bit more juice than the off the shelf Denso.

Don't forget to make SURE your factory wiring and amp gauge will handle the increased amps SAFELY scope We don't need to read a post from you or anyone else on here about having a wiring meltdown or burnt up car from melted wires catching on fires shruggy

THIS.........All of my 12 v wires tie into the main post directly from the batt. and are wired around the stock loom. Only my headlights, taillights and blinkers run through factory wiring.......Good call Cab......

Re: Alternator upgrade? - 10/26/15 11:54 PM

Dom, did you run the wire from the alt to the + terminal on the starter relay in addition to the factory wire? I read some where about doing it this way.

I run the Denso 85a with a external regulator... I
dont want any alt that I cant buy at the auto parts
store and I dont want any alt with the internal reg..
why buy a alt if the reg goes bad... mine holds 14.8
volts and I run everything electric... its been on the
race car and my Rampage now for 14 years... still running
strong

Over 25 years with Toyota and 5 years with Honda and I have yet to see a regulator failure with a "FACTORY" Denso alternator re-built or new. Has anyone ever seen a Chrysler regulator or alternator fail whistling

The Denso I use IS a Chrysler alt.. it was production
in the 90s I think.... you use what you want..
on my P-body when it was a stock 4 banger the reg took
a dump.. it was in the computer... I wired up a mopar
reg external on it
