INDY 440-1's on a 4.375 bore 499" 2.25 valve or 2.19 ? - 10/24/15 05:17 AM

Fully ported 440-1 heads on a 4.375 bore 499" motor upgrading to the 2.25 intake valve worth it on the 4.375 bore?

Any real world numbers would be great..

Thanks Jim

I have had several different sets of 440-1 upgraded to the 2.250 intake valves, the first motor was a 4.375 stroke with a 4.380 bore 440 block build, it made 845 HP on race gas with a single 440-3 intake and a 1050 4500 Holley dominator carb. That was with a set of headers that the exhaust flanges weren't big enough for those heads (the motor would miss from 5200 RPM up to when we quit pulling it at 7500 RPM) but they where the only headers available that day, two inch pipes with thhee and half inch collectors realcrazy I'm sure there was another 10 to 30 HP with the proper size pipes and flanges thumbs I'm having a 400 block machined right now for another set of the 440-1 with the 2.250 intake valves, that block is 4.380 also with a 4.300 stroke crankshaft and better rockers work If it makes 800 + HP I'll be happy boogie grin

I was able to go 9.34 at 3000 lbs with a 499 4.375 bore, roller cam, alky injection, bowl porting only on the heads, 440-1 with 2.25 intakes. That works out to over 725 hp for unported heads, with about 2,000 DA

Thanks for the input I do not have the heads in hand and was wondering if the 2.25 valve would be getting close to the cylinder wall shrouding the valve and affecting the increase in flow of the 2.25 valve.
Stuck whith a stock block for now.

I went from 2.14 to 2.19 intake in a set of RPMs. I notched the top of the bore and side of chamber next to intake valve to help reduce shrouding. I matched it to the head gasket. Also made other changes too so don't how much if any the valve change made.

I also went to the 2.19 in. valve but didn`t notch the top of the cyl. and although it runs ok, I`d think the notching would help especially w. the 2.25 valve at that bore size. I`m at 4.377.............

There was a fairly long thread on here as well as on SpeedTalk on the same question not too long ago. I believe the answer is that nobody really knows for sure.

My 514 dyno mule makes over 900 hp with a 2.19 intake valve and a 4.440 bore size. Dwayne and I have talked about putting a 2.25 intake valve in it since on paper it sure could use more intake flow. But I've never pulled the trigger on it and might not ever do it. It is still making 900 hp and there are other items that are higher on the priority list.
