First NHRA Super Stock Street Hemi in the 8's

Had the car out last weekend at Atco, and major bugs are finally worked out. Super Stock "Legal" 426 (439") Street Hemi broke the 8 second Barrier. 8.87 @ just under 150mph.

Many thanks to Ray and David Barton as this is now the baddest Street Hemi on the planet. Carter 625 carbs and all!!

This was actually run #2. Run 1 was 8.906, but no one recorded it on video.

Fantastic! Congrats on keeping the SS Hemi alive and kicking in class racing. Everyone knows what SS/AH are doing but the SS/CA/DA/EA have always been a favorite of mine.

One of my two favorite cars, other being 68 s/s Cuda. Great accomplishment.

And yes this car always ran good and was always fast when raced in good air. It was a very simple combination and worked very well, but to go faster…This one makes 125 hp over the old one. Both on the same Barton Dyno. Ray knows Hemi's!!!

Believe it or not these were the first 2 passes that this engine has gone a to b without an issue. I ran 2 different sets of carbs back and forth trying to eliminate a mild stumble when the converter grabbed the engine. Biggest problem was time or lack of it. Accumulate enough data and notes and you learn….

Right now hoping the Keystones doesn't rain out and affect the Dutch. Hopefully I'll be there and put the record where it will expire before being touched again!!

And as far as the AH car, Lets just say that not only is this red '70 my true passion, but it gets real jealous every time I attempt to work on the AH car. This winter it will get painted, but again, not enough hrs in a day. Any extra time I had between testing this year was spent working on the '70. And it finally is beginning to show!!!

Breaking the 8 second barrier may not mean a whole lot to some, but for me it was a goal ever since I started building this car. The AH cars may be the kings of the race Hemis, but I love the Street Hemi in the B and E bodied cars!!

I hear ya about the Keystones, we are planning to run 11.50 index with my Dart next weekend at the Dutch Classic I really hope they don`t cancel it. Maybe I`ll see you run in person. Good Luck on trying to set the record! Cool!

Nice job, love the car, very nicely done. I recall the chassis was built by Kurt at Pro Start Race Cars in NJ? I was wondering if he was still in business, seems like I heard he closed the shop. My chassis was built by him.

Thanks for the reply and confirmation. Sorry to hear he closed. He was very talented and and worked fast, unlike many chassis shops that seem more like a storage facility. Keep it up with the car, it's an awesome piece.

Kurt just got burned out. That pic was the way I found out he closed. Driving out to Rays and stopped to see what was going on as phone was off. All his equipment was sold to a local guy and loaded in that trailer. And the garbage was ever so efficiently packed in that dumpster!!

He could more with less than most people I knew. I remember talking to him about your car BigCube, and he told me some stories about the build. And very few stories were good!! He hated door cars. Wanted to do Funny Cars and the funny story was he got his wish. The last car he built was an alky f/c for Annie Whitely. Drove him over the edge and shut the doors as soon as it left...

Um I hate to be the bearer of bad news after all this praise but you are now looking at having to spend more money on that ride updating the safety equipment and adding a parachute. Damn I really hate it when that happens. lol

Great job I love your car I hope my Hemi runs like that when I get the bugs sorted out.

The car already has an 8.50 cert chassis and you don't need the chute until 150 mph. I plan on adding one over the winter and that is an update I will wear proudly.

At National Open Races there is no AHFS. As fast as you can go without taking the hit. But yes, that was also one of the reasons I elected to withdraw from the Keystones. Runs under 1.00 sec. do hit the trigger which will put the combo under review. And 1.2 under is horsepower on Monday.

Ahhhh I was unaware this was a National open. In that case, Let 'er eat!!!

This would be my dream car if I had the funding to support it and similar to your comment - I also prefer these over the AH cars.

25 years ago I built its twin, it also ran in the eights.....but it was 2960 lbs with 540 cubes of bracket engine - lol.

The car ran flawless all weekend and while the weather was not what I had hoped for… WE GOT IT!!!

A BIG thanks to Ray Barton and everyone at Ray Barton Racing Engines!! The MPH tells the tale. Without Rays Hemi it wouldn't have happened in that air! Now time to get ready for the Atco open in the spring and put the records even lower!!

Is your car Gold? I was helping an AH team in the shoot-out after I finished teardown and saw 11.50 cars in the lanes at one point. Thought it had to be you as not a lot of Darts out there, but you had your helmet on and thats business time in my book… Always nice to meet members and put a name with a face! Next time!!

Yes thats my gold Dart, My friend Jeff was actually driving this weekend hes much better at deep staging and a pro tree but was struggling with the Maple Grove tree. After an electrical problem and mad thrash sunday morning we missed our third time shot/ qualifier but got it fixed right before first round but he was -005 all on all we had fun and it was cool racing the Dutch and we were treated well from being told when to race by mgmt on a scooter to a great pit spot right next to the lanes and starting line access.. Plus the AH shoot-out was awesome those cars are just incredible , Congrats again

It's awesome to see a 70 hemicuda back in the record books for SS/DA. I remember when there were so many of these cars running in SS/DA. It is a rare treat to see one today. One of my favorite cars. Great job and thanks for the memories!
