roller lifters - 01/24/09 04:57 PM

I plan on buying a roller cam and lifters at the swap meet in Indy in March. Many years ago I ran a comp cams roller and had no problems with it. I plan on buying a solid roller. That was 15 years ago when I had it. Is there any one better than another? I figure I am going to have to get a custom ground cam, since I can't seem to find one with what I have been told to run. The smallest I have seen is a .616/.592 282/292 tht doesnt sound to bad to me, but my car has a 3.54 gear in it and I was told to run 4.10 with that cam. I was advised to get a cam in the .550 lift range.

Any input?

Thanks scott

I have used Chet Herbert rollers in several motors without a problem and you can't beat the price. They have a lot of grinds and can do the custom grind for you, again you can't beat the price. We are using a grind in the NSS cars from them that is .618-.622/272-280 @ .050 that works real well in a stock stroke 440.

10 to 15 yrs. ago I had Comp Cams grind me a custom solid roller for a customers Street Hemi motor with a 727 and a B&M 069J converter in a 1964 Plymouth Savoy that had 3:54 gears in a Dana 60 with 275x60x15 radails street tires. The cam used non Hemi lobes, probally BB Chevys that had around 260 @ .050 duration and close to .600 net lift. The motor pulled really hard from a idle to 7000 rpm EDIT, I built a new Hemi street motor this summer for a new customer, World block with 4.25 bore and 4.25 stroke, 9.4 to 1 compression, custom ground Comp Cams hydraulic roller cam, Moparts single four crate hemi intake that the customer had, 850 CFM Speed Demon carb, crate Hemi iron heads the customer had and Stage V rocker assembly they had. The motor is in a 1968 Charger with a 727 and a Continental custom built 11 inch converter, Dana 60 with 3:73 gears, pulls hard, runs good, idle is fairly nasty but does not load up or do anything stupid PM if you want one similar to either cam

Comp Cams has a good selection of street roller cams, sounds like one of those should fit your bill. You might even go with a hyd street roller cam if you don't need to turn the rpm's up too high.

I have read about many people having problems with hydrualic rollers and I prefer mechanical. This is a street motor that will probably have a 6000 chip in it.

Here's what I'd run: 280 advertised, 242@.050 and has .570 lift with 1.5 rockers so hemi has a touch over that.
I'd grind it on a 110lca and install it 2° advanced.
Power range will be roughly 3000-7000rpm and should have excellen throttle response!

Comp's XR280R is 242/248 @.050,.570/.576 lift on a 110CL. I have it in a 470" low deck street toy. Runs great, nice idle, good throttle response and pulls well into 6k range
