Cable question for pushbutton trans racers..

I agree with hemi-itis, use the old stuff, I still have my buttons in the stock location, but can't help you really, have no experience with the new tranny old shift.

I have no problem with the early stock design, however I have had experiences where a foulup in the mechanism has burnt up a unit.

The dilemma I have now is this. I am building a maxie car for a customer and I already have a fully done late trans that is ready to go. As Wayne stated, if I wanted to go back to the stock setup I will need to find a 65 BB unit, and start the build from there. This is a car designed for FAST, so quite a bit of work is involved to get the trans "just right". It would just be easy to use this "dialed in" later trans than to start from scratch. Not to mention the cost savings involved with not having to get another tranny and set it all up.

If anyone has any real world experiences, I am all ears.

I run the 65 trans in my car. The rotating assy in the trans can be swapped from a late model except for the output shaft,case,and tail housing. I talked to the owner of Imperial (he's not far from me). The only concern he has is the releasing from park. He says his set-up could be damaged pulling the lever out of park on an incline. As far as shifting he had no issues. The push button valve body detent spring on the rooster combo is much weaker than a late model. I don't remeber if their set-up changes that or not. As far as the 65 set-up. I've run thousands of passes with no issues. The shift mechanism is very simple. Cables in good condition and proper adjustment is all that is required. I may see them at the Chrysler swap meet this weekend,they're usaully there. If you have any questions PM me before Sunday.

Hey Mike is that 63 Dodge pic you posted Dave Finn's car ??

You could always do what I did for now as I used a 1970 trans that I had and did a stock type rebuild on it. I dont run no class so I just added a floor shifter for now as my funds were limited. I have the push buttons and all the linkage still in the car and hope to hook them back up when I can get what I need to make the push button's work with the newer trans. Ron

Yes, that is Finn's FAST car that I built last year. Well, seems as though someone else is thinking that the MW isn't so bad after all. So the "new" MW project is just about to get started. The floor shifter is a neat idea, but won't fly for FAST. I guess the search is on for a 65 unit, that is unless someone can give me some real world feedback on this early/late deal.

Dave Finn's car is really a nice 63 Maxie car. I heard his eng dyno'd at close to 700hp ???? I know he had run 11.04 and was knocking on the 10's. I wish I had the coin to build my 63 for FAST but since I dont it was not a problem for me to use floor shifter for now. It can always come out later. I always felt the Max Wedge would make a good FAST car and it looks like you guys proved that. Ron

Don't mean to high jack, but I'm right in the middle of working on a '63 polara and my next project is the tranny. Planned on just putting a late model tail shaft on a early tranny for driveshaft reasons, but that may not be possible??? Any body have a phone number for Imperial and maybe a contact name? A buddy had one of the Art Carr units (chome)
in his 65 Belveder I with a Hemi. But this was
back before 1970.

hi, i always use the org 63-64 push putton trunion trans ,and put the 65 slip yoke tail shaft on.put the turbo action valve body in, with hp rebuid, it works fine.use all orig cables etc.the 65 big block trans are going for as much as 450. for core i have 2- 65 tail housing, and shafts cleaned,painted , new seal installed, ready to bolt on for $200.00 plus shipping. just a thought ? will be at the all mopar sled city swap meet at hillard ohio next sat 1/31 franklin county fair grounds thanks

This is just a suggestion, don't pass on a trunion big block case as all you need is the shaft and the tailhousing to make the conversion. That shaft and housing can come out of a 1965 Poly transmission.
