Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 01:14 AM

The fastmanefi web site has been updated to include the Holley EFI systems. And now today - this was released from the NHRA:

NHRA announced Aug. 13 the rules and requirements for the 2016 Pro Stock category in their transition to electronic fuel injection (EFI). The sanctioning body has named Holley EFI as the sole provider of the components of the electronic fuel injection system.

All I can say is wow.

Those are going to have to be very expensive systems to make it worth whatever it cost to become the exclusive provider.

I mean - how many systems are they going to be able to sell in the first year?

How many in the following years?

Special box? Maybe... But the current Dominator ECU does everything they need and it allows password protection so others can't steal the program, yet allows access by NHRA officials. The amount of custom I/O that the Dominator allows is more than adequate for Pro-Stock.

Or maybe I should say a special P/N on the box
just for the pro stock

How many will they sell in the "Pro Stock" configuration?

their home track... then its ... how many spare
boxes you have in the trailer... plus the ones at

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 02:43 AM

I am glad some of you guys think you have ALL the answers on how things work and I hate to let FACTS interrupt a good story, but here are a couple.

It "cost" us NOTHING to become the sole provider of EFI components for NHRA Pro-Stock. Holley has a long time association with NHRA from both a sponsor and participation standpoint. The NHRA is already well versed on the Holley EFI, seeing as that is the factory equipped ECU on the COPO Camaro. So we "PAID" nothing.......they simply chose us

There will be no "Pro-Stock ONLY" box. They will use either the HP or Dominator box and it will be the same one anybody else buys off the shelf. If there is anything special required by NHRA in the way of monitoring, that will be a simple software flash.

Sorry Monte, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 03:01 AM

These days.......everybody thinks there is something behind, everything that happens. Like the whole world is some big conspiracy theory and nothing happens without under the table shady dealings and palm greasing, especially in racing. One needs look no further than ANY discussion on safety gear. All it seems to be is one big conspiracy between the NHRA and safety companies to milk money out of the poor racer..........I get so damn sick of reading that idiotic sh%& it makes my stomach turn. Many are always looking for somebody to blame for something, instead of looking in the mirror and then the whole world becomes a conspiracy to them.

But enough of that............Like I said, we already have a good relationship with NHRA, assured them we had a product that met their qualifications and could supply said product. There was a 3 or 4 man team that met with NHRA brass, I know who they were, when they went and also know they did NOT go with a case full of money.

People think Holley is some big corporate monster or something. We employ less than 400 people all total. Our "EFI Team" if you want to call it that, consists of 4 people at the Holley plant and 3 more at a place we own in Canada where the code is written. That's IT, the whole team. Far from some smothering giant entity

Looks like the feathers got ruffled... I figured
you would have been part of the group to talk with

Group Hug!

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 04:13 AM

I think I've been around here long enough to have shown that I don't intentionally try to ruffle feathers or create conflict.

I just meant that generally - when I see a "sole provider" - it means that whatever company that is, has to pony up with sponsorship money for the series or agree to terms with the sanctioning body in return for said "sole providership." That generally means it's costing that sole provider some amount of money to be able to SAY they are the sole provider. If that's not the case, then that's even better for Holley.

No conspiracy. Just business.

And again, no feather ruffling intended.

No need for a group hug and my feathers aren't ruffled. But you will notice it only took until the SECOND post in the thread before it was mentioned about "how" the deal was done. Typical these days. I just find it sad to think that so many feel the whole world works that way

Monte, are they going to be using our smart coils that we sell to you guys, Big Stuff, AEM? Good info. Congrats, Monte.

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 04:55 AM

I'd say it probably had more to do with Holley's long standing relationship with the NHRA more than anything else. When it comes to fuel systems Holley has been there and done that for decades.

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 02:29 PM

I'm stoked they're going to EFI. I know they'll be something that comes from it that has even eluded the auto manufacturers engineering teams. That many smart guys whittling away looking for single digit power increases will find something.

How about just the fact that it's something new? I can only imagine how creative just the injector placement might get. What will all the new manifolds, and throttle plates look like? (might not get a look at them for a while).

Think of all the great deals they'll be on used PS carbs. I think WJ has a thousand of them lol!

I may be wrong, but I think the self correction abilities within the control units will eventually become almost perfect, and no longer require so much hands on tuning. I also wonder if those self correction parameters will be used by PS.

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 07:09 PM

That's a sanctioning body decision. It seems to me that they intentionally make the systems dumb.

Monte, I think you had every right to snap. People are all too fast to whine, place blame, and make up stories. Reality needs to be re-established.

I remember back in the '70s when it seemed the EPA was going to kill the car hobby/way of life. Holley was one of the companies that didn't roll over and die. Holley by itself has kept the carbureted world alive and kicking, with a few stumbles (4360,4010) along the way. Holley carbs of today are worlds better than the golden oldies. And now that they make the best Thermoquad substitute, life is good. Edelbrock, another company I respect for keeping the show alive, didn't start making carbs until it was established that they could still be viable.

Back to now...I predict that within 2 months of the first new Pro Stock race, there will be griping about certain teams getting inside programming help.

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 09:32 PM

How many Pro Stock teams are there? 20-30? I doubt Holley would ever make a profit on these units. Maybe they will sell their similar system to us regular guys after the pros get them to fly? If I was going to make parts for a small group, I'd want an exclusive deal for a couple of years. I'm kind of surprised the Chinese haven't made knockoffs of the Holley carbs, aka, Horrey Calbulatols! LOL!

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/18/15 10:59 PM

If it ruffles anybody's feathers or not,,,the truth is, the ONLY thing behind ANY decisions made by businesses and NHRA is ALL ABOUT MONEY. The rule change is ALL ABOUT MONEY. More of NHRA's ideas to improve ticket sales. I don't see it helping though.
Call it conspiracy or whatever.....it's money based. $.02

What part of "they will use our existing ECUs" do you guys not understand. There will be no "special" Pro-Stock ECU, other than possibly a software change, which is a simple "flash" of the unit
Posted By: mr_340

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/20/15 04:01 AM

Did I say anything about the ECU? NO! I suppose the new throttle body is used somewhere else too?

Now NHRA published the new rules and parts lists and they call it:

"554-129 Holley EFI NHRA Pro Stock ECU"

Maybe that is where someone ELSE thinks it's a special unit? I can read your comments just fine. I may decide to block you from here on out, so if I miss something in the future, you will know why?

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/20/15 04:24 AM

There is a great write up about this on Bangshift.com. From what it looks like if you were new to the pro stock game this EFI deal is WAY cheaper than some dominators....I think it mentions some teams have a $30,000 CARB BUDGET. Plus I doubt any of the teams have an "old trusty" intake manifold they run every race all the time, so I am sure getting a new intake is no big deal either as that something I am sure is constantly evolving anyways.

My statement about NHRA decision making is based on over 33 yrs of racing in NHRA, I have personally seen decisions made by NHRA employees and thier decision makers based on input by personnel freindship, sponsor participation confused I've been told by NHRA officials, past NHRA division 7 director, that we, sportmans racers, are only allowed in to particpate at NHRA national races as filler between the Pro Car races, he said no one pays to watch sportman race, they pay money to see the fast cars only. I ask him how many people paid to watch and race at the original Sprtsman National in Bowling Green,KY and how much money NHRA had lost on the Supernational races at Ontario, CA before they combined the NHRA world Finals with the Supernationals. Needless to say he didn't make any comments about that confused I know every organization out there needs to make enough money to open the gates and pay the staff and other ancillary costs up When NHRA was forced by a lawsuit, from a imjured Sportman racer, to become a California for profit organization, because of keeping a large amount of money in reserve, that convince me that most of the decision makers at NHRA are in it for the money, salarys or hourly rate, bonuses, benifits, perks and so on shruggy In all truthfulness I would probally be that way also devil BTW, I do have some other insights and input from former NHRA employees and volunteers also up Monte, I'm not putting you or Holley down on this tsk, I'm voicing my opinion on past decision making by NHRA shruggy

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/20/15 10:31 AM

So, will the move to EFI in PS result in a wider selection of intake manifolds for other engines (i.e. #I'dKillForALowDeckMPIintakeFromEdelbrock) or will development be limited to PS-based blocks/intakes?

Re: Fast Man EFI and Holley News - 08/20/15 06:36 PM

Wish they would've ditched the engines too. Limit them to 7.0L production based with pushrods.
