727 specialist - 01/21/09 12:43 AM

Well its time for me to get a trans for my car so has anyone heard of 727 specialist? Is there anyone using a trans from this company? Does any have feedback on this company? Just looking around but right now narrowed it down to ATi or 727specialist

My recommendations would be for

CRT (Cope Racing Transmissions)

or

727 specialists which is Keith Long, who works directly with Mr. Griner of Griner billet valve bodies.

Both are members on this board

I think Keith builds a very good trans. I used it with and without a transbrake for 4 years with no problems. He installed a Griner transbrake valvebody, I have used it for 10 years. No problems!
I now have my good friend Lee of L&P trans. do my trannys. He does a great job also! Don

I’m very impressed with Rick Allison at A&A. His company and machine shop is top notch. He has newer CNC equipment and from what I’ve seen, his products are of high quality. Plus, he’s always gone out of his way to help me out. Granted, I’m not a big racer but I know what good customer service is.

I highly recomend the 727 SPECIALIST for MOPAR 727 and 904 transmissions. I have been running them since 1997!! I am also running a Griener reverse manual valve body bought through Keith. We have run a best of 9.49@139.60 in our 1970 GTX.

I would like to update this thread due to needing a reliable source for a street/strip 64 big block 727. Anyone in the past year or so had any experience with Keith aka 727 specialist?

I have his transmission in my junk, plus just had him go through a stocker for my Volare. Very good trans guy. He's also doing his own valve bodies now.

Yes, and he's starting to add his own touches now too.

I used CRT (Cope) for years with good luck. Then I had him redo the 48 RE in my tow vehicle, and what a nightmare. Was shoddy workmanship and sent me the wrong converter twice. At first he agreed to cover the second R & R, but then pi$$ed backwards and told me he would only reimburse me for a converter. I’d look for someone else if I were you. Jim.

Re: 727 specialist - 09/10/20 02:36 AM

I did call Cope at one point to talk to them about building a transmission for my Duster but the guy I talked to didn't seem interested in talking so I moved on. Not sure if I was talking to the owner or not, I think I was. I didn't worry about it much, he is a distance away and shipping back and forth was going to be expensive.

I've talked to Robert at A&A a couple of times and he seems to know his stuff. He helped me pick the correct parts for the build. So far I really like the A&A parts. Just wished their website was a little more up to date. If you call them you'll discover that they have new products or different products than are on the website. I guess they are a phone based business rather than a web based business.

I’ve reached out to Keith (727 Specialist) a couple times on a couple older Griner transbrakes I had. Was always easy to get a hold of and had all the answers.

As Cab mentioned if/when I need a mo-better 904 I’ll be calling Pro Trans. Dave and Darren have helped me a ton over the years with my transmissions. Good people.... great product.

I am running one of the new 727 Specialist valve bodies that uses the Griner design.
Very consistent and quick on the release!

Well I asked and you guys recommended! After using my local guy to rebuild the trans in my pristine 64 Sport Fury convertible 426-S it lasted all of two weeks. Actually it never was right. I did what I should have done in the first place and had Keith Long (727specialist) build me one utilizing one of his nice cores with 67 & up internals and a new 2800-3000 stall converter. It arrived in a very reasonable time frame with output flange included. I installed it this past Friday evening, filled it with ATF4, hit the key and breathed a sig of relief after good firm engagement in R & D. Test drive was the best I had witnessed after owning this car for 15 months. I was finally happy. Back on the lift and up there were zero drips, dry as powder. Again, elated! 7 hours later I was able to attend our last big show here in my area where the Sport Fury garnered best in class out of 22 cars. Thank you Keith for putting an end to my nightmare and providing me with a trans I know will last me for a VERY long time! And thank you to the Mopart's community that led me to the right decision! Do you know what clutches are in your trans? I've been told to run Dexron 6 now that my dodge transmissions have performance clutches in them.

Re: 727 specialist - 10/26/20 12:47 PM

Here is a break down of what Keith sent me.....remember this is a street tire set up.

Ft pump gets rebuilt with new bushing a good housing -checked gears - a new seal and o ring. rear part of ft pump gets machined if necessary.
Four borg warner clutches are used. clearance is .070.
rear clutch retainer Clutches are raybestos carbon type. Four clutches are used. clearance is .020 to 045.
ft band is a custom design using carbon lining and the flex band. .
Rear band is custom design using an oem type lining.
I use a three or four pinion front planetary making sure the splines to the input shaft is a good tight fit. using a good thrust washer. Rear planetary are usually three pinion with a good polished thrust washer.
