16 foot open trailer and A body????

16 foot open trailer and A body???? - 07/03/15 02:19 AM

I bought a nice used trailer from a trailer dealer and brought it home today.
In my excitement I didn't pay a lot of attention to how long it was.
Well, it's 16 foot with a 4 foot beaver tail on it.
Looks like my Duster will fit on it..... Hopefully... But won't know for sure till I load the car up late tomorrow afternoon.
I have 16 foot that is flat. Anybody had such a trailer before. Think the one I had few years ago must have had 18 foot that was flat, and was fairly roomy as I remember.

I had a 18 ft. ( 16 flat with 2 ft. dove tail) and I hauled my 71 Demon on it with out any problems.

I used a 16' for a few races, my Dart fit with no problems. The one I used did not have a dovetail though, so I had to use ramps under the truck to get enough for clearance.

Towed my 70 dart on a 14' trailer. It was tight. 16' should be fine.

The Duster and other short wheel base A bodys are 108 inches which is 12 ft. ,correct? So your fine as far as it fitting on your 16 ft long trailer properly, make sure and get the center of gravity on the car loaded forward of the center of gravity on the trailer so it will tow easily without swaying scope I know guys that have used 1000 lb wharehouse platform scales under thier front trailer nose wheel disconnected from thier trucks to see how much tongue weight they where putting on the trucks towing hitch, they would move the car to get what they wanted and then put marks on the trailer so they could put the car there every time from then on upIHTHs up

I use a 14 w/2 ft dovetail. The dovetail makes for easy access to the back straps.

We've had a 16 ft for over 25 years. Hauled the Road Runner and the Demon on it with no problems.

I used it last night. Had about 6 inches room in the front with the back tires just on the flat part of the deck. It was tight.

How did it tow? What are you pulling it with?

Your Duster must be a lot longer than my Dart. I have an 18' goose neck, 16' deck and a 2' dove tail. With the back tires about 1' from the break I have 18" or so between the front of the car and the neck.

Thats the problem with the short trailers Don... you dont get
any fore and aft movement to balance the load properly.. if its
to far rearward the trailer will wonder and whip... this is
aggravated even more during braking.. as the nose of the tow ride
dips(normal) the back lifts up and the tongue weight gets even
lighter... this amplifies the whipping condition

I am guessing by tight you mean you wanted the rear tires on the flat part of the trailer. You still have four feet to adjust the load if you need.
Actually, you could make it fit in a 12 foot trailer if you had to.

I love my 16 footer. I've hauled A,C,and E bodies on it. Once I put a 67 Caddy sedan de'ville on it

Re: 16 foot open trailer and A body???? - 07/05/15 03:28 AM

Is the car centered on the axles? If not you may want to try that to see if it works better or not shruggy My 24 ft.enclose car trailer puts about 800 lbs on the rear end of the truck with the car all the way back so I can barely close the rear ramp door to clear the rear bumper, the motor in the race car is barely in front of the front axle shruggy I had to move it foward to shut the rear ramp door when I put the parachute on the car, that made the back of my 1 ton singe wheel crewcab 4WHD go down some more in the rear, it towed fine though shruggy

DOn.. forget about centering the car over the trailer axles..
thats BS... with the trailer and truck LEVEL.. then put the
car on the trailer...take it to get the total trailer/car weight
and based on that number move the car fore and aft to get 10%
to 15% MAX on the tongue... you might need lift bars.. when you
put the bars on you bring the back of the truck and the front of
the trailer back up to LEVEL.... in MOST cases you will find that
the top of the ball will be at 19" to keep the trailer level.. once
you find that load balance point.. mount a set of stops for the front
wheels... I wont tell you I know what I'm saying.. but years ago I did
trailer design for U-Haul

A 16' open beavertail has been my Duster's trailer for decades. Overhangs the rear a bit with the weight basically as Mr P says. Ft tires about 6" or so aft of the ft edge of the deck, where I bolted some wheel chocks.
I've had my Road Runner & my '63 & '64 Savoy wagons on it, but found the limit with a long-bed '68 Chevy pickup...rear wheels were close to the rear edge of the deck, barely fit.
I mounted a PU-truck toolbox forward of the ramps, a floor-jack tray between the box & the ramps, and an electric winch inside the box (hole in rear wall for cable).
Tows fine, and the box is also handy for some of the race stuff, tie-downs, etc.
An antenna & antenna-ball I mounted near the coupler makes it easy to line up for backing the truck up to it. Reference decal centered in back window of the canopy/bedcap.

Re: 16 foot open trailer and A body???? - 07/06/15 02:54 AM

I think a Duster/Demon has a 110 in. wheel base. My D50 also has a 110 in. wheel base and when I put it on the trailer so my tow vehicle (Dakota) is level the front wheels are a little more than 5 ft. from the head rail. I just measured my trailer and it is 15 ft. flat with a 3 ft. dove tail. My back tires are just barely on the flat part of the trailer. Best towing trailer I have ever owned.

A Duster has 108" wheelbase. Our Challenger has 110" and it also fits on a 16' trailer.

I have to figure out a shorter strap deal for the front. The eyelets are cose to the tie down point.

NO. The Duster was 108" (9'), the shortest A body was 106" (8'10").

I had a 13'10" trailer that I hauled A and B bodies with.
When I built it, I mounted the axles so I could load a B body all the way to the front of the runners and a A body about 6" further back. The back of the car hung past the end of the runners a bit, this bothers some, I don't know why it matters as it doesn't effect towing.

I now have a trailer with 16' runners and a tool box (2'deep-2.5'long-5'wide) in front. I wish I had my old trailer back, it weighted less, pulled better and took less room to store.

A-bodies on a 16 foot trailer are no problem at all.

I've carried stuff a lot larger on my 16 foot trailer. laugh2

It handled fine, speed of about 60-65.
