Taking a break from racing.....

Taking a break from racing..... - 06/28/15 11:00 PM

The day in one quick note: Up at 6am, work till 3:30, haul to Vegas, time hit a bit after 8pm, race 1st round at around 11pm, 2nd round after midnight, haul home and back the trailer in the sideyard by 3:30 am. Don't get me wrong.... it was fun and I love being at the track. Always a great bunch of people, but.... it was 116 on my overhead when I left town and 113 when I hit Vegas. Now the ole 01 diesel is a great truck, but to be honest the 28ft trailer and addition of the golf cart has brought it to my attention on a couple occasions that we are at the threshold of the power/weight ratio of this combo, or at least in the hell like conditions in which I chose it as my weapon of choice. The truck was born with 4.10 gears which I hated and fell into a axle swap with a used truck to the other option of 3.55 which when you're NOT pulling a 14 mile 7% grade works great! Until this year I was very pleased, but now that we use the truck as "tow only", I wish I had my 4.10's back!

First time hit was around 8:30 so the sun had dropped over the mountains. Little wind so it felt like you were hanging out in a giant blowdrier. Pulled up, did my burnout...... and could not see a groove. Nothing but a shiny black wide spot in front of me. Pulled straight ahead, let go of the button and basically nothing happened. 1.47 60, front didn't even think of coming up.... at least the car always goes straight. Guy in Super Pro 1st time hit wasn't so lucky... found the wall. Second hit you could see a groove and we were at a more respectable 1.35 60 and then a 1.349 1st round. Ran an 11sec car first round and he redlit.... I did the same at a -.025. Second round I ran a 9.7 car... he left clean, I once again redlit -.028. At least I'm consistent.... Best pass of the night was a 9.60 at 139.9. The DA was 5800+ when we started and never dropped below 5200 all night with a steady baro of 27.69 from 10pm until 1am and the temp was still 94. I'm DONE until cooler weather!! laugh2

this was the temp of the road as I climbed out of the hole in which I live. Had the windows down and the heat on to keep the engine temp in a more "happy" range....

just leaving Laughlin NV..... 14 miles 6-7% grade

Loading up at 12:30am..... what a day!!

thinking late September we'll be back out there!!

First off kudos to all of you guys who deal w/these conditions who race, go rounds and win.............. bow Secondly, I would never even consider these HOT/HUMID conditions as track time cos I`m an et chaser so GOOD COOL conditions are my norm. laugh2 So, I`ll see you guys at the Vegas track AFTER oct.............

Jay What did you end up doing with your trans are you happy with it know?
What about the converter?

Re: Taking a break from racing..... - 06/29/15 12:05 AM

While the trans is shifting "ok", my expectations are still of that unit I had in the Mirada. Worst mistake I made was letting that car go with that 727 when I could have thrown the footbrake unit I had here as a spare. Trans will be coming out again, I'll have the converters adjusted, and the 727 will go to summer camp in California. I also need to get the parts for the PPP shifter which will be on air and I'm going to a 4.56 gear..... all in time.

My break consisted of 2 little girls added to the family, new house, and reboot of the hot rod (hemi and chassis work). Hoping to get back into it this spring. Take care buddy!

Re: Taking a break from racing..... - 06/29/15 12:51 AM

well my "extended" break from late 07 until 13 was involved with chasing a fastpitch softball girl all over the countryside. I miss those days dearly, but at least I had something to fall back on! Enjoy the girls... it goes by too fast. btw mine starts ASU in August so that'll cut into the racing some! I wouldn't have it any other way.... she's a great kid.

Get a grate, Sauna rocks and water spritzer, you'd be set.

Car looks great in that picture.

Easy fix on the tree, you are consistent and a TF Brake can be altered to take care of that. Just a set screw with a little ole hole in it smile

No Shiloh.... I'm an IDIOT! wasn't there an hour and realized I should have stuck with my first idea... an air conditioned Buffalo Wild Wings playing triv and enjoying cold beer! My other stupid idea is to go to Albuquerque next weekend.... maybe I'll finally get my 10 sec time slip!

....and then round two I'm strapping in and noted, NO HOOD PINS!! the hits.... they just keep coming! A: at least I noticed B: running without the hood didn't seem to change the performance. smile

Late August in Sac will probably be triple digit temps, but its a dry heat.. smile

Seriously.. the DA will be slightly better here... I believe it was 2400-ish last weekend at 100 degrees

so far so good! it's such a docile lil mill. valve lash staying rock steady. Can't wait to get to a track where I could play with it a little more. I really hate to change stuff when you are trying to go rounds. It needs the converter loosened and I think some 4.56 gears over the 4.30 would be a nice set up.

I remember being in Vegas in July and August, Id agree with you Jay, its to hot to race, coming down from Wyoming at that time it was really a shock to the system, car didn't care much for it either.
