500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with?

500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/19/09 04:08 PM

I'm looking to get my 68 barracuda in the 11s so i've built a 500" bb stroker. I'm using stealth aluminum heads, the 557 lift mopar cam, and expect to use the car mostly on the street but it will see the track occassionally. I haven't picked up the carb yet but expect to go with the 1050 dominator.

Opinions please from those who have done this? Stick with the traditional torker II or ??

hi there,

I have a 400 stroked to a 515 ci from 440 source, i too have the stealth heads. I also think i m close to the 560 lift as well. I ll be using the toker II intake on my set up. Your barcuda is alot lighter then my 74 charger. So you should get moving pretty quick. I d suggest on at least a 3500 rpm stall TQ in the tranny. As for carbs, well i have a few choices, a 650 holley, and an 850 demon. But i may have to get something bigger. If you have any pics send them over to my e mail.

Look for a larger plenum, as your CI goes up you
need to increase plenum volume also

Holley Street Dominator is a good one if your not going max wedge ports.

I would think a single plane is in order.Which one depends on wheather you want a dominator flange or a 4150 flange. If you have the hood clearance some say a 4150 flange with a dommy adapter works well.
I would think a victor would fill the bill with enough gear and converter.Others likely have more experience with dominators and no what intakes work best.
BTW you should be well into the 10's with some traction.

B or RB motor? There is one choice for the B motor and three choices for the RB motor if you want to run a Dominator on standard port heads.

The Mopar Performance M1 intake with the 4500 flange is a great intake and is fairly low profile. The M1 intake is avaiable for both the B or the RB motor.

For the RB motors, the Edelbrock Super Victor with std ports is an excellent intake but it is pretty tall. There is also a Weiand Team G intake with the 4500 flange but it is kind of a funky intake with big notches in the inner runners.

If it was my engine I'd go with the MP M1 intake. 725 for the RB or 724 for the B motor. They work great, they're cheap and the they look pretty good.

Here is the M1 intake with a 4500 flange. This is on my 505 motor that has CNC ported Mopar heads. 680 hp with a street roller cam. This setup would make a killer street/strip combo if you can afford the race gas!

I've put a 4000 lb car deep in the 11's
with only 440 cubes, 452 iron heads and a
825 race Demon carb.

Your combo could get buy with less carb. If you
want the big carb, I would give it more cam.
The M-1 works real good. Which ever way you go,
your car should run 10's easy with tuning and
track time.
Yes mine was a daily street driver.

Had good success w/431 &
E Heads (prepped by Dwayne Porter)
Edelbrock RPM manifold, 1 inch spacer, 950 Holley, 4.10 gears
Works pretty good in a heavy stick car
Hope this helps

This would be a great candidate for the Big duel plane intake that Indy offers. and would complement that cam shaft well. This intake can be open'd up to max wedge window down the road too. It blows away about any duel plan intake there is, and made more power than about any traditional single plan too.. It crucified the other intake in mid range torque. I just dont think the larger Victor, style high rise intakes would work well with those heads, and camshaft. You will never see the rpm it takes to make them run.

I second the big dual plane indy offers. best out there for street strip!

For a 4150 carb , I recommend either the Indy 2D or the holley SD. On the dyno they were pretty close to each other on my 500" engine in the 550 to 580 hp range.

If you use the Dommy - I don't know. If you use the Indy 2D with a Dommy and adapter, you'll have hood clearance issues, possibly not with the SD.

Well my opinion isnt worth much, but you can have it for free..
The reason I would not go with the Victor or any other High rise intake is that the motor is mostly street, and that engine and cam wont RPM very high. Im guessing 5600-5800 and she's all done. Those intakes just work better on 6K and higher engines, but the good side is that if you do use one of those intakes, it might hook better on the street, do to the loss in torque..

The Holley SD would be a good intake, and If I could pick one up fairly cheap...that would be the way to go also.

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/20/09 03:07 AM

The Indy dual plane on a 500 inch motor is a very stout piece, especially in MW form and with a big carb!!

But in a light cuda a single plane may help a bit by actually taking off a little upper bottom (if you can't hook it up) to make the car more tractible.

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/20/09 03:17 AM

getting a 500" Abody cuda into the 11's would be no problem.
I used a M1 single plane and a ThermoQuad on a mild 493" to get a long wheel base truck into the mid 11's with a 3.31 gear.

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/20/09 06:08 AM

wow Red Ram that truck really hauls with that TQ!

Nice!

Does anybody have any comparisons between the M1 and the big Indy dual plane. I kind of boiled it down between those two. I have an M1 but my 500 inch stroker might like the dual plane better as it will be in a heavy car.(Challenger)

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/20/09 03:39 PM

I have a 440 punched out to a 500 stroker, Forged crank form 440 source, Indy EZ heads and an Edelbrock dual plane intake. I had a Demon 750 but on the engine dyno the carb was defintly too small. We looked at some of the Demon RS series carbs but went with a Braiswell 1050 in the end. I don't have the cams specs handy but it's around 600.

OK my opinion, get an Indy Dual plane. and get the thing port matched with the heads. That should get that skinny Cuda into the 10's as a street reliable car. ( Don't get the Edelbrock manifold since you would have to mill off the heat transfer passages anyay, well depending on which valley pan you buy)

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/20/09 05:56 PM

I would use a the Eddy Performer RPM intake and a 1/2 adapter to mount the carb or port the top of the intake and drill and tap new holes for the carb mounting holes this intake flat works on the street and at the strip

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/21/09 01:27 AM

the Indy 440-2d works good on the 500 inch , low profile at only 5.25 inches , will bolt on your stealth heads & you can open the same intake up to the max wedge size in the future if needed

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/21/09 02:42 AM

Sam,

Tell Russ he needs to do a 4500 flange version of your dual plane intake. There is enough material there in the casting, just machine them with the other pattern when you have the intakes on the VMC.

Might be a good idea to offer them with the runners opened up to MW size on the CNC. The intakes have to be in the VMC anyway to do the surfacing.

great intake, you can use mine (already Maxied)(PLEASE!) to build the prototype

I've got a worked 1000HP on my 517 already and she's using it all up and want's a bit more!! Needs a dommy (that'll fit under the stock hood )

Re: 500 inch Mopar Build - Which intake to go with? - 01/21/09 03:22 AM

M-1.

Sounds like your combo is fairly similar to mine. I don't have it installed in my '69 Barracuda yet, but guys here say low 11's to high 10's shouldn't be a problem.

If you are street driving it, I'd go with a smaller carb for more response and better manners. I have a new 950 HP for mine, but probably would've done fine with an 850. 1050 sounds like a little much, IMHO.

My combo:

440 block, .040 over, 4.15 crank
Hughes HEH4650BL Hydraulic cam, 108 lobe separation, specs are at 1.6:1 :
intake .606 lift at 246 duration
exhaust .614 lift at 250 duration
Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, 84 cc
Harland Sharp 1.6:1 rollers
Ross 99903 pistons, 11:1 at zero deck
Ported Mopar M-1 intake
Holley 950 HP
MSD 6AL, MSD Pro-Billet distributor

I had a 440-2D, nice intake but will still require a hole in the hood on an A-body/RB motor...not much shorter than the M-1...I'll bet you know the exact height difference, dont-cha'?

an M1 with a dominator on a low deck fits under a stock charger hood.

I have a 68 Cuda fastback project also
440 stroked to 505 with 440 source internals , about 11-1 . with Muscle Motors cnc'd Stealth heads
Victor Intake , 950 Holly ,
I hope it fits under my Hemi hood scoop
MSD ,
CompCams XTQ294S-8 solid lift cam
.567 & 579 lift
.264 & .270 dur @ .50
2" CPPA chassis headers
Mufflers undecided yet , but I want LOUD side exit in front of the rear tires
727 tranny and I'm looking for a converter now
I hoping for 600 horses or so and 10's
Dana 60 , 4.10 gears and my tub work is still ahead of me yet
It's just a fun weekend street machine to take to the track a few times a year

I run that same cam and a very similar setup. I think you'll like it... Mine is a 493 (11:1) with MCH Eddy's, 3:91s in a 4000lb Road Runner and I'm running high tens. I don't have a Victor though. I think thats a better intake than the Wieand Team G I'm using.

I do. It's not the best quality but it works.

http://home.comcast.net/~69rdrnr/100_1707.mov

About the original thread, I don't think low 11s or high 10s will be a problem with that combo My intake is considered to be an older, less efficient design and yet I have to be making > 600 HP. Last October, I raced a Chevelle with a 572, 620 HP Chevy Crate motor and beat him with a 10.90 to his 11.19. His 60' was a 1.50 to my 1.52 and I was pulling away from him at the other end. I know I'm heavier than him so all things being equal, I'm making at least as much HP as he is, if not more - with an intake that's not as good as a Victor or an M1. So you should be ok, with either.

I've tried several carbs and settled on a Holley 4150, 950 CFM. I bought a used one from a friend for $300 and it's been great.
