Solid 7290 u-joint, where can I find one?UPDATE - 04/28/15 12:29 AM

I'm in need of a solid 7290 u-joint and the only one I can seem to find is a Lakewood from Summit. The local napa can get non greaseable ones but the counter guy said they're still cross drilled. I highly doubt Lakewood is the only one who manufactures solids nowadays but I could be wrong. Any ideas?

In my opinion, Spicer makes the best solid joints. I've been using their 7260 joints with no problems.

I used the Spicer joints in my Scamp. The old 12 valve got Neapco joints. I don't really know much about them though.

Look for the Neapco brand and inspect them before buying them to make sure they are not drilled scope up

Thanks for all the replies. I like the Dana/Spicer as well and I've seen their non greaseable listed but wasn't sure if they were cross drilled or not. They're definatly my preference so I'll do a bit more searching. I've got to get a move on so I'm ready for the Chrysler Power race in Columbus in 2 weeks. up

Re: Solid 7290 u-joint, where can I find one? UPDATE - 05/11/15 05:38 AM

Ok so I've had the Spicer 5-811x in and out multiple times because it was a clip wdith off I I was tinkering with it tonight and thought I'd try a used spare solid I had laying here just incase it was an issure with the new Spicer. I had the same results with it. I then looked the bad u-joint over again an found the clip slot slightly closer to the X body of the u-joint. So it seems the shop that built my driveshaft used [censored] caps on the driveshaft side of the u-joint and told me they were 7290's. The rest of the u- joint carries the same cap #s and X body #s are on the good used u-joint's caps and X body and both came from the same shop. From what I can tell both old u- joints look to be Neapco brand. Any ideas where to find a solid [censored] joint or different caps for my 5-811x?? I'm down to the wire now I'm leaving Friday morning for Columbus! Did I mention I drive it the 160 mi to the track race it n drive it home? help panic

Re: Solid 7290 u-joint, where can I find one? UPDATE - 05/11/15 06:51 AM

Here is a possibility. The 7290 Detroit and 3r Saginaw(GM) series are very close dimensionally. Both have 1.125 caps but 7290 is 2.622 between the ears and 3R GM is 2.556. I have seen some shops use 3R weld yokes, due to availability, and a conversion U-joint to get back to 7290. If you measure between the ears and get 2.556, you will need a 3-3133 Neapco to get you going. The 3-3133 is a 3R/7290 conversion joint.

Or, a 5-795X is the solid body 3R. You may be able to swap two caps from the 5-795x onto the 5-811x and vise versa but MUST make sure bodies are identical. The 3-3133 is a greasable joint but wouldn't be too worried as we were beating on those things long before the solid bodies became "all the rage" with the cool kids thumbs

Re: Solid 7290 u-joint, where can I find one? UPDATE - 05/11/15 06:59 PM

Your theory seems very probably to me because when I picked up this driveshaft it had greaseable joints I complained and they put solid body's in for me. I betting the just put the 3r to 7290 caps on a 7290 solid body.

Re: Solid 7290 u-joint, where can I find one?UPDATE - 05/14/15 05:21 AM

Well I finally got it back in one big hunk tonight. I've got to send out a big thank you to MoparFish for pointing me in the right direction. The 5-795x GM and 5-811x Chrysler use the same body so I now have a spare as well. Thanks to every one who have given me the info I was searching for and couldn't seem to find. Now if Mother Nature cooperates it should be an awesome weekend!! drive
