Mini alternator?

Mini alternator? - 04/20/15 03:27 AM

Can you guys recommend a mini alternator for racing?
This will be for a big block A body with a motor plate.
I have no problem fabricating a mount setup, I'd like to mount it under the motor plate.

I run a 75 amp East Coast. If I had to do it again I'd get something bigger. It works but it's on the edge with ignition box, 2 fans, water pump, and lights at night. There customer service has been good.

if you run a MSD crank trigger that part is MRECT-30 $43.95

I had a 55 amp mini for many years. Too small. Went with a 120 amp and my temp back at the pits dropped average 30 degrees because of the higher voltage.

Re: Mini alternator? - 04/21/15 01:56 AM

I tried some of the small mini alternators and I found about the same thing on all of them. I even have one for sale. None of the ones I tried will charge or provide even voltage at an idle. If you raise engine rpm, they start charging, but then it falls off again at idle.

My full size 100a unit works very well, but its heavy. I wish I could run a mini, as I have a really nice one for sale, but maybe I will try one of the Mancini 60a units.

I run a Denso 85a on the race car and on the Rampage on the street..
it will drop off on charge at about 650 rpm.. its a external reg
which I like.. The way I have the sense wire wired up it puts out
14.8 volts pretty much all the time... here is a pic of it on the
race engine.. I have it mounted about the same on the Rampage

CHAPPER do you have a part # for that or an application?
Thanks

Re: Mini alternator? - 04/22/15 03:15 AM

Don't recall the #,,,,look at their website,,,it was described as being for street rods/drag cars/etc. IIRC it is only like 40 amp, but works for me. My car idles at 1100rpm and it puts out 14.3 volts at that rpm. Search dbelectrical and it should show up,,,they are in Tennesee.

Re: Mini alternator? - 04/22/15 06:57 PM

I just recently installed a small 55 amp powermaster for my drag race only car. Went from having to charge battery every time I came off the track to forgot there was a battery in the car. It stated where the rpm was going to charge and it was correct. Yes these don't charge till 1100-1200 rpm I charge going down the track and return road. Didn't lose any performance works fine for my setup. 340 Auto electric fan, electric water pump, Elec fuel pump, line loc. Tail/ brake lights just a race car I like it. But a bigger engine more electrics everybody is different. Im glad I did should have done it sooner.

I would be leary on the Rareelectric alternator. I had a 12v and it lasted less than a year and barely charged the battery. I run this one and like it quite a bit.

Re: Mini alternator? - 05/29/15 03:59 AM

Well I ran the car last weekend and I got 5 passes in and it died in the staging lanes.
I survived the weekend by putting the battery charger on it after every pass.

Re: Mini alternator? - 05/29/15 05:13 AM

My current bracket car with two group 24 RV/Marine batterys stays charged up by running a 100 amp single wire Powermmaster alternator mounted off of the front motor plate up I will put a slow charge in it with a variable 6 amp charger for several days before racing when the car has set for more than a month to make sure they are both topped off, slow charging batterys at a low rate works a bunch better than a quick charge at a high rate like 30 amps. scope up

I run a mid 80's denso 70 amp from a Toyota 4-runner and it werkz fine for me w/elec water pump, rad fan and ign. box and street driving and cool downs are awesome.

Re: Mini alternator? - 05/29/15 11:46 PM

you might want to put a ground wire to the adj. bolt.
I killed 2 mini ones in a week each.
No prob. since I put the ground wire on.

Re: Mini alternator? - 05/31/15 03:20 PM

I'll try grounding it and see what happens.
