Racepak or other Data loggers....

Racepak or other Data loggers.... - 03/19/15 07:21 PM

Can they log the basic sensors you already have? Meaning non-racepak sensors, just your run of the mill temp and oil pressure type one, or do they all have to use THEIR sensors?

I think I need a logger, but man they are pricey...And then to display what they are reading you need another set of sensors and gauges...I want to look at putting one in, but need it at a more reasonable price tag when all is said and done.

Racepak is the best because they are almost impervious to noise. But you have to use their V-net sensors.

Most data loggers use a 0-5v sensor so if racepac
does then its just another sensor.. it could have
another ground but I dont know their stuff

Just put a Racepak Sportsman in the car this winter.... I've got ALOT to learn! Cool seeing how high the converter flashes after tbrake release. Seeing actual shift rpm in relation to your shift light..... and noting how long my 1-2 shift was takng in relation to my 2-3..... Self inflicted hydraulic leak was slipping the band. Eventually I want to add oil psi, coolant temp, and one O2 sensor at least. I bought mine used at a lil savings...

When it comes to temps they use the standard K-type
probes.. a 1/4" K-probe will work great.. just gonna
need to weld a boss onto the radiator then use a
1/4" compression to 1/4" pipe fitting... you can
look on line to find K-probes pretty cheap

So much valuable information can be gained with a racepak. I caught my high volume oil pump sticking and going over 130 pounds of pressure and when I tried switching from a milidon oil pan to a canton my oil pressure was dropping under 20 pounds of pressure when I left the Line on the trans brake.

Re: Racepak or other Data loggers.... - 03/19/15 10:34 PM

I think their pressure sensors suck. I've had to replace 3 of them in 3 years at $185 a piece. They are good recorders, but overpriced. They are the best choice right but, IMO the Racedata I started with was less trouble and better sensors, unfortunately they are out of business.

Rich... or anyone... is this V-net sensor anything
special or is it just a 0-5 volt sensor.. how many
wires on their sensors

Re: Racepak or other Data loggers.... - 03/19/15 11:01 PM

Been looking at the Datamaxx units as well. Same issue I think...I would need their dash to see the data live.

Both are pricey, and if RP sensors fail with that kind of regularity, I would probably go thru the roof spending that on it to have it fail...

That's all my Autometer stuff did was quit on me....

I bought the cheapest Sunpro crap I could find the last time out...Two seasons and still working....I think all the gauges are made in the same factory these days regardless of price..

If I spend the coin, it has to last....Or be cheap enough to carry spares.

Going on my 4th year with my racepak with zero issues on a car that is raced every weekend from April into November. Oil, O2, trans temp, water temp, fuel pressure, and all the ones that are included.

I have a odd ball unit.. called a "Informer" but its
out of business.. but all the sensors are just standard
stuff.. I happen to have a FEW of them left over from
work.. thats pressure and temp sensors.. that unit
gives me 18 channels(read outs).. I use most of them
but 8 are EGTs... to be honest I wouldnt buy anything
that needed special sensors... you can buy the standard
0-5v and K stuff on line pretty cheap

The basic sensor is a simple 0-5V sensor, but ... (there's always a "but" isn't there?) they use the V-net to make it dirt simple to add and remove sensors with no additional wiring. It's like a long daisy-chain or a CAN network, You just insert the V-net module anywhere in the network and it works. But that requires the V-net module electronics to communicate with the network. The sensor is simple but you still need the electronics interface.

Well I have been using Racepak stuff for probably 6 years now. Never had to replace a sensor on any of my cars. Their system MUST be run with their sensors as well. IMO there is NOTHING better than racepak for data logging. Their customer support is also awesome as well.

I'm installing a logger dash soon as the parts come in

Racepak juct came out with a GPS sensor to show MPH. I was the first to buy one

Racepak has the best reputation, but they are pricy. Don't be afraid to shop other brands. Be advised that sensors are addictive. I have 21 and want more.

You can buy another logger to save a few bucks..........but in the end, you will always WISH you had bought a RacePak

For someone that has no data logging parts.. Whats a ballpark price to purchase a complete system?

The sky is the limit honestly. You need to decide what you want to log first, then decide which logger will fit your needs best. The Racepak sportsman is less expensive but has more limited capabilities from the factory, channels that it can monitor and type. The v300 has more capability while the 500 has the most. Prices for the base units go from $850 for a Sportsman to $3200 for a V500o unit. All other channels(sensors)are extra and those prices vary and interchange with each unit.

Often imitated and Never duplicated...Theirs a reason racepak is #1

I never used a racepac... I did a TON of data logging
at work... was reading up to 400 channels on a car
in most cases.. went higher on others... there are
certain perimeters that will dictate how good any unit
is.. what sensors, number of sensors and how fast it
can read the sensors.. how many analog and other
inputs.... this was on car testing just like the
racepac is doing
EDIT
and one of the most important things is the amount
of data the storage can hold(how many channels and
hours)

Re: Racepak or other Data loggers.... - 03/20/15 11:24 PM

for the guy who started this it depends how deep you want to get in to logging.
i my self got a wego3 for hacking and tuning my zx12 ninja. well it goes on all my toys and some friends.
it is just rpm afr and a 0 to 5 scalable channel.
but you get to see many things no one that is not logging can see with just afr and rpms.
the size of a credit card.and 300 to 400 bucks.
.1sec is the fastest poleing setting and 800 memory cells. so at .1 you get 1 to 2 passes in the memory.
but i love it with out being a lot to look at it is simple for simple logging.

I'll bet I have $5000 into my sportsman. The thing about Racepak is, everyone uses them so those that have used them are familiar with reading them. I'm still learning mine after 3 years.

I have a racepak in my outlaw Camaro and a RPM in my dart. I honestly can say even though the racepak is *better* the RPM is awesome for the money and never thought about replacing it.

I love the info from vacuum through the pass to converter slippage.
A bud of mine bought I believe it's called a Data maxx and the damn thing looks like a flat screen TV .
Anyway I love the iq3 and the info it provides because the guess work is gone.

We use RPM and I can't imagine anything else we need to log that it doesn't do...Saved enough over the racepak to buy these !!

If you need help with your setup, you can show your racepak file to just about anyone at the track and they will know how to read it and analyze the data. The other loggers may function just as well, but they are not as widely used.

Ben, a question for you: Like Mr. P, I have an Altronics Informer. If I were to switch to a racepak, can I use the sensors from the Informer?
The Informer uses a serial cable, with an adapter to plug into USB. And the software is ancient. I understand that the Racepak has a simple interface like a smart card or something...

Re: Racepak or other Data loggers.... - 03/23/15 08:50 PM

What Al said.

I know that the Racepak can be an intimidating investment up front, and you will want to save as much as you can, but if you just get everything from them the first go round, there will be no issues. I can't tell you how many times I've had a customer ask me to retrofit his old stuff and by the time I'm halfway through I'm ready to put a bullet in my head....haha..

Thanks

The gripe I have is, to log a few things its +$1300 and I don't even get a display...For about the same price, I can get an entire efi system that logs everything and it comes with a display...Unfortunately its not legal in my class. So I wanted to see what else was out there.

That would stick out in a Nostalgia class like a pink Zebra....I did look at those, but I would have to ask the tech director if those are allowed...I really don't know.

I did the racepak white gauges in my dash to keep the nostaligic look, i didn't want to use the display.
