1. Forward pattern or reverse? (I.e., are you trying to keep using an original Slap-Stik shifter, or does it have something else that can work either way?)

2. Low-band apply (probably, based on your description) or not?

aftermarket shifter B & M pro stick so either pattern will work and I would think I want LBA but not sure?

Street driven, or track only?

Re: Which manual valve body to look for? - 03/04/15 02:39 AM

How about making a full list for future reference?

1. Street only, forward pattern

2. Street only, reverse pattern

3. Street/Strip, forward pattern

4. Street/Strip, reverse pattern

5. Strip only, forward pattern, LBA (?)

6. Strip only, reverse pattern, LBA

Should there be 727 and 904 breakdown?
Does HP change VB application?

You could make your own Rev manual using a good core VB and purchasing an ATI separator plate. Using a mill or drill press with an end mill, you can modify the channel walls and reassemble the kickdown valve and throttle pressure valve in the correct orientation.

Otherwise, the Griner 22G05B is the superior RMVB available. Can also contact John Cope and coperacingtrans.com

FWIW I drive to the track and race. I use a Turbo Action RMVB. No problems in 4 years.

I have been using Turbo Action RMVB's on the street since 1997 with no problems. But you need to be aware of what you have and drive it correct. Ron

IMO, options #1 & 2 make no sense; 99% of the people use a MVB in either street/strip cars or race cars.

Everybody else can leave it in "D".

When my cuda was an auto I had a reverse pattern manual valve body and it was a full street driven car that was also run on street nights at the track. I modified the gates on the factory Slap stick shifter to work in reverse ,worked great.

That's how I'd describe my Challenger, too; it's a street/strip car... when it's running.

Is there any literature/books to buy that explain this process? I have stacks of valve bodies and a mill + tons of spare time.

Munroe's book won't show the transfer plate mods needed to build a RMVB. The pic below shows (in red) the channel partition areas that need to be removed. (1/4" cutter)

For those without a milling machine, a thick steel plate with a 1/4" hole drilled in it can be used. Place the hole over the area to be removed, clamp the steel plate to the transfer plate with two C-clamps and drill out the partitions using a 1/4" drill bit...mark the depth on the drill bit to prevent drilling too deep.

On the main valve body, in addition to the kickdown valve mod, the 1-2 shift valve area needs mods and some components need to be tossed. '71-later shown but earlier is similar.

Turns out the full instructions for converting to manual shift are also on the tech archive Here . Looks like there is a warning that the transmission will no longer have coast braking in first, I assume this means no LBA?

Correct, LBA has coast braking in first.

I will be replacing a TurboAction RMVB, with a Coan RMVB w/ LBA since the car will be street driven. Don't need the stress of worrying about anything going wrong if my wife decides to take the car to the 7-11.

There's more to making the trans LBA than just swapping the valve bodies. I don't know if they're all the same or not. See installation pdf on this link if interested.

Is there any drawback to a forward pattern/lba VB? I like the forward pattern on the factory slapstick and don't want to change it.

From talking w/ Turbo-Action and reading stuff elsewhere, a RMVB design is faster on the track for reasons I can't explain (not a tranny guru).

I have a FMVB w/ my factory Slap-Stik for exactly the same reasons you stated. Works for me.

Re: Which manual valve body to look for? - 03/05/15 09:47 PM

I always heard the reason for reversing the pattern was so you're shifting away from neutral/reverse instead of toward it

Re: Which manual valve body to look for? - 03/05/15 10:33 PM

I had to regrind/weld the shift gate in my column shift for my mud bogging truck, we routinely shift a ton and that shift into Neutral or reverse sucks.

+2. call John at CRT - LBA RMBV + bolt in sprag + billet drum

It's a crap shoot - I know people that have raced for 20 years with less and have had no issues. I also have a friend who used a non-LBA RMVB and a stock drum. It was built by a well known transmission guy and it grenaded on him and tore up his car and cost him a body part...

I raced my buddies Duster for him and he had a forward pattern manual V/B and I hated shifting while racing having to push the shifter forward. I am just so used to the reverse manual V/B and it just makes more sense when racing your car to pull the shifter towards yourself. Ron
