Do you have too many projects?

Do you have too many projects? - 02/01/15 05:59 PM

I just picked up a set of 1957 Hemi Industrial heads and I'm thinking FED build using maybe an old Poly block since Hemi motors are hard to come by and I heard most of the LA reciprocating parts fit the poly block.

lol I'll just add it to the current list of projects including:

1970 Dart Drag car
1969 Barracuda 383 formula S build
1969 Roadrunner street/strip car build
1969 Roadrunner Drag Car build
1969 Power Wagon 4 door build
1971 Power Wagon short bed build
1967 Camaro Drag car build
1981 Malibu Drag car build
3 Cummins trucks with auto trans issues
3 Chevy Suburbans 1 running
3 Jet Boats in various stages of disrepair

you're not getting any younger Jim.... thin the herd.

We've sold off a ton of stuff the last two years, and it's helped to finance the Duster upgrades. Lots of empty shelf space now!

I also have too many to care about, trying to get them going one by one.... same with motors. Have 100+ years of workload to finish it all, and if I am lucky 20+ years left to live......

Nearly done with a resto on a 1977 Yamaha RD 400.
Once it warms up , it will be swapping a 340 for the incline in my '80 Volare wagon and buttoning that up for Momma to play in.
It looks pretty easy when you type it out.

You always have some cool stuff Mr Pbody, and I have the perfect duck boat project for you, a very rare 1973 Spectra 24' Daycruiser with a Jaccuzzi jet drive! All it needs is a motor, interior, and refinish! Such a bargain!

Not that I want to mess with your project count but I'm pretty sure that those heads will only fit a Chrysler poly block up to 58.

The Poly "A" motor won't work because the bore space is wider.

just an example, not all or race car related but kind of todays chores
replace the battery on the pit bike
work on the fiberglass crack on the door of the race car
replace 4 ballasts that blew out in garage when we lost neutral in the fuse panel
replace the broken guide on the boat
argue with knuckleheads while taking a break about dana 60's
check to find out why the fridge in the motor home wont run o gas
dam im tired is the super bowl on yet

Re: Do you have too many projects? - 02/01/15 08:18 PM

I met a business friend of my Dad's many years ago.. In between talking about work stuff, he took a moment to walk me thru his garage and showed me all his projects..

I thought to myself that if this guy retired and did nothing but work on his projects, he'd die before he got half of them done... and from that moment on I realized how one must be wise when taking on too many projects..

So I can easily say all my projects are "manageable" right now.. and they'd be done is money wasnt an issue

Re: Do you have too many projects? - 02/01/15 09:00 PM

I bought myself a 15 1/2 foot fishing boat when I retired in 2010 at the age of 53 and swore that if that boat didn't hit the water in 2014 I was going to fill it with dirt and plant tomatoes in it. Well I am going to give it another year. I sold a 1972 Duster that I bought 11 years ago but another one followed me home and took its parking spot. 3 race-cars, a motorhome, Dodge truck, Chevy Malibu, car trailer, and 1 3/4 acres of property keep me busy. I am going to hit the gym this week to prepare for race season and try to get my get up and go back. Turning 59 this year so I got to keep moving.

My wife sure thinks i have too many! However i have narrowed myself down to 3 toy vehicles and will be keeping it at that for a long time. I've got my satellite which is pulled apart and about half done, have my jeep which is about 3/4 done and my fwd Daytona that I've been sitting on for 8 years as a someday project. Then I've got one Toyota i bought to fix and flip as well as a ram with a blown transfer case that i want to keep for a tow rig. Add to that the house and workshop I'm building, it all adds up. But I'm making progress and vowed that nothing else will follow me home unless it's to fix and flip.

Finish new motor for Jet Boat
Finish resto on 81 XR500
Finish EFI conversion on CJ5
Finish changing out rear swingarm and fenders on Harley...........and THEN, I need to work on Challenger, Lil Red truck, GTX, 63 Dodge, etc, etc, etc..........LOL!!!!

Hey Al, thanks again for that 16v battery you sold me at MATS, my sluggish starting turned out to be the starter. Unfortunately my trailer got broken into, fortunately they only got the batteries and a small air compressor so it wasn't too expensive but it still sucked.

That's cool MrP............The rifles are relaxing for me. Have several 1000+ yard rifles........6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x284 Norma, 300 WSM, 300 Win Mag and a 338 Edge. Just bought a James Coffey built 300 RUM, but it's not here yet. he claims it's a 1/2 MOA rifle at a 1000 all day, we will see. Also have a 6mmBR and about any varmint caliber you can name for shorter stuff.

I was thinking it was older. That chassis uses a BD 154 engine. B 414, 434 and 444 tractors from the 60's and 70's used them so there are lots of them around.

Re: Do you have too many projects? - 02/02/15 12:06 PM

Too many projects here too, but certainly can't win any "one-up" contest with some here.

10 acres to maintain, my sons are into shooting but it's just a distraction from boat/car building for me.

Got 4 boats, 1 is for sale.
68 RaysonCraft, 18ft, 440 mopar, velvet-drive a very clean/solid vintage skier.
64 RaysonCraft, 17ft, project, getting a B/RB, has F/N/R Casale box. Very solid vintage ski boat.
77 Mantra jetboat, Looks like "Rogers Bonneville", Berkeley pump, "G" splitbowl, loader grate, shoe, rideplate, 2" pump setback, project, has Mopar hardware, needs a lot.
96 Northwoods, 14ft, w/15hp Johnson, best lil' fishin' boat.

69 340 GTS
69 RR street/strip
69 Sport Satellite
80 Cordoba LS (budget street/strip for my sons).
90 Chevy work truck, "shop truck" for towing skiboats.
67 Camaro RS/SS RatRide, unrestored day-2 street/strip car.

Eventually, I'll narrow it down to the 2 v-drive boats and the 2 B-bodies. My sons may inherit the rest before I pass on.

Re: Do you have too many projects? - 02/02/15 12:28 PM

Never too many projects, just too little time or money.

I don't feel too bad now. I only have 5.

1. '73 Duster
2. The Daytona
3. '83 D-150
4. '04 Red Horse Chopper
5. '72 Skylark

The chopper is actually done and up for sale. The Duster is staged up waiting for warm weather so I can do brakes and lines. The Daytona is ready for the engine/trans and the "it will only take a minute" fab stuff. The truck I have no idea what I will do with it. I should sell it, but I have way more in it than I should have.

The Skylark I have had for 30 years. It was my first real race car and has an odd story about how I got it back after selling it once. It is my "I'm gonna fix 'er up someday" car. Honestly? It will probably be on my estate sale just as it sits.

Dang Monte that is badass! Hey I was talking to a boat mechanic and he was telling me not to turn those jets past 5500 rpm or they could blow, and I was thinking yeah, anything will come apart if you spin it high enough but 5500 seems a little tame for performance. What modifications do I need to perform for the extra load?

I had a 19' jet boat with a 455 and a berkley pump..
on the 455 the rods were the weak point.. thats why
they didnt want you to turn it up past 5500.. I use
to run mine a TON of time at 5500... that boat was
fun.. that boat had what I called berkley disc brakes..
I would be running all out forward and slam it into
reverse and play the water line right at the windshield..
the whole bow would be under water.... LOL

Well Cab.. the wife and I both hunt a fair amount
and back when I was building the P-Body... I would
buy a race car part and she would buy a new gun..
we both fish so we are good that way.. she doesnt
care to go to the track that much anymore because
she has a BAD hip(this one will be replaced in the
spring after we get back home) and she already had
the other one replaced and this summer she had her
left shoulder replaced.. pretty soon all the corners
on her will be new... she lets me do what I want so
we are both happy she knows I want to do
drag week and I have gone 3 times but not with my
own ride

Jetboats need torque not hp. That's why the big cube motors is where it evolved to by the late 70's. The cut of the impeller reaches a point of diminishing return as you go from an AA, to A, to B. Kind of like a stall converter, fuel efficiency goes away, rpm's are screaming, just for a few more mph. Pretty soon the owner is sick of feeding the thing ($$$).

And what ruined it further, most newbies owners would beach the thing or fire it up at the boat launch and suck up sand to inadvertently wear out the "wear ring" and further reduce efficiency.

Part of it was just the size of the outlet.. most
were a 4" but you could replace it with a 5" but
your right.. it took torque to turn that pump

I have a few projects lined up for the next coming years... decades perhaps.

- 1957 Plymouth 4dr HT - major-project
- 1959 Dodge 2dr HT - very major-project
- 392 Hemi build ('57)
- 5.7 Hemi build - almost done
- 6.1 Hemi build
- 500" 8/71 build project
- 400 stroker

Aside from fixing up/repairing/keep running the other cars in the stable.

Finish new reloading room and sight in about 10 rifles, as well as work up some loads.....I do long range shooting as a hobby
Finish new motor for Jet Boat
Finish resto on 81 XR500
Finish EFI conversion on CJ5
Finish changing out rear swingarm and fenders on Harley...........and THEN, I need to work on Challenger, Lil Red truck, GTX, 63 Dodge, etc, etc, etc..........LOL!!!!

What motor are you building for the Jet Boat?

Alum headed 515 BBC, with a 6/71 and hidden EFI in the hat.

Here is boat with previous motor

Dang Monte that is badass! Hey I was talking to a boat mechanic and he was telling me not to turn those jets past 5500 rpm or they could blow, and I was thinking yeah, anything will come apart if you spin it high enough but 5500 seems a little tame for performance. What modifications do I need to perform for the extra load?

Its all about "loading" the pump properly. Be that with a certain loader, a different cut impeller, nozzle bushing, whatever. Sounds like you should talk to someone who KNOWS jetboats.....not just a boat mechanic. It's true that you build for torque, NOT rpm as you can't spin a jet pump to the moon, but pretty much ANY stock jet drive will be fine to 5500. And it's NOT that it will come apart after that......it just cavitates so much water, the extra rpm gains you nothing.

I started a new project a month ago building a 94 ram 1500 2wd reg cab short box diesel drag truck and I posted it on here but it got moved to the truck section I guess because you cant have drag trucks I guess. Either way I dont think there is such thing as to many projects.

Re: Do you have too many projects? - 02/03/15 12:32 AM

Yes way too many. I start them a whole lot better than I finish them. A better shop would help as the cramped space I have now is not heated / cooled so I do not get down there to work much. Loaded a whole bunch of good .308 this winter - on the kitchen counter while watching tee vee.

And then when spring hits there is so much that has to be done on 20 AC. Garden, Purple Martin gourds, cutting that darn grass. And this year I have to get a bunch of dirt work done. Barracuda totally apart, 2 Demons.

Yeah I'm new to boats but just looking at the basic Jetboat with a killer big block, it seemed like overkill, I mean I would think any decent big block should be able to turn those pumps to 5500.
So I wondered why didn't they just have like two or three Jet drives driven by a badass big block so all that power isn't going to waste?
That way you would have two or three times the propulsion without spinning the motor sky high.

I've got the right amount of projects, I just need more money and time mainly money.

I'd like to pick up an old Suzuki Quadzilla to mess with tho, they were cool as hell when I was younger

I sold my 87 quad racer 500 after owing it since new just last fall. Got tired of it being in the way. I had my fun with it, road it a lot.

Re: Do you have too many projects? - 02/03/15 08:54 PM

Think twice before acting, jet boats suck a bunch of fuel and most direct drive decent V bottoms will out run similar powered jet boats Some I/O drive V8 powered boats will also I know a local jet boat racer up here with a big C.I. Ford motor that runs in the 9.0 class, they have a bunch of very high dollar parts in there race boat motor, dry sump, custom race block with 4.695 bore, I think, and so on I've been around boats most of my life, from little 12 ft runabout 25 HP outboards to the big high dollar ocean racers. Most honest boat owners will tell you the two best days in thier lifes are the day they bought thier boat and the day the sold it You do know what BOAT stands for , right? Bust Out Another Thousand Have fun
