You should have had him wire in some "jumper cables" to the three phase converter. If you ever have an "issue" again, just hook up the cables and throw the switch...poof...all better...

Glad to hear things are going well. Now get milling!

LOL, the guy gets off his death bed and goes straight to the shop.

Glad to see you are on the mend and can enjoy the important things in life.

Its funny, I told Rick to leave a couple of wires
sticking out just for that purpose..... he didnt
think that was such a good idea . Yeah about
the only way I would quit working on stuff would be
that I am dead. I already got 1 project done today,
its so good to be back at it

Small block guys work well together, and have the smarts to get most anything done

Our Big Block bretheren, however, sometimes are sorely lacking in some critical areas

Re: I'm A Happy Camper Again - 01/10/09 04:10 PM

This is actually a very good suggestion. As a former shop supervisor, I would always tell the guys to make sure that someone else knew if they were going to be in the shop alone. That way someone could check up on them after a while.

Some crazy things happened in the 5 years I was there, once a guy was turning a steel shaft and left too much hanging out the back unsupported, it started to wobble and then broke off and went straight up into the roof and stuck there! Had to get a roofer to fix the hole.

Another time a guy put a 2000 rpm max grinding wheel on a 10,000 rpm die grinder, again, it whizzed along for awhile, then flew off and broke the window on our vertical cnc machine.

There were no injuries I can remember in my time there, just close calls. If someone were hurt, though, I wanted someone else to be around to call an ambulance.

What kind of converter are you using?

Many people don't realize that converters don't make sense any more in today's day and age. You should be using VFDs (variable speed drive).

The benefit is single phase in, 3 phase out, variable speed and if you get the right one dynamic braking - - sure is nice to have the mill stop spinning in 1 revolution without mechanical assistance. They can be had cheap on ebay.

I have 4 vfds in my new shop.

I'm using the electronic type.... I couldnt see running
a big motor to run my small motor. My old electronic
one was too small to handle the HP but this one will
handle a motor twice the size of mine... this one
also starts much faster than the old converter

TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP <=====SOUND OF MY FOOT TAPPING

I check on him a lot when he goes out there by himself.

And thank you Rick....he is a lot happier today than he has been since escaping the hospital. He gets awful ornery when he's stuck on the couch.
