440-1: leave ports in stock form?

440-1: leave ports in stock form? - 01/08/09 06:19 PM

Hi,
just bought a set of 440-1 heads and realized that the intake ports look not very smooth on the port entry. Is it worth the time smoothing this edge for better flow or are there only little to no gains by doing this?
They are going on my 500cui for 70% drag. Motor gets a Scott Brown 650" lift roller cam and should rev to 7000.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Chris

I would blend the port the runner entrance. The best thing is to bowl port below the valves for some extra power.

do you have a die grinder?
get a sanding cone attachment 300grit paper and smooth what you can, take your time.fuel can collect on the rough casting and not be attomized.
if not you will get by with the way it is.it is just not the best it can be.

With minor bowl work i went 9.54 in my dart at 3000 lbs, 499 cubesb with a roller, 12.8/1 compression, and a dominater 9375. So you should see similar performance if you put just a bit of work into the bowls as suggested.

Similar - 511 ci, 3160lbs, box stock -1s, tunnel ram, twin 9375 doms - 9.38.

Thanks guys,
I will disassemble them and give the a treat with the die grinder. CNC is out of my budget, but smoothing everything, especially the bowls I can do myself.

What is best protection for the valveseats when grinding the bowls except not to contact them with the grinder?

take your time by the seats!using a short extension with sanding cones will be more stable and wont chatter on you with a slower rpm.maybe put tape on the seat.

Dont start the grinder till the cutter/drum is below the seats in the bowl. Make sure also to have the right cutter. And for Pete's sake dont let a $1000 head be the first thing you practice on.

Yes, tape I did use the last times I ported heads. Just wanted to hear how you guys protect them.
Thanks for helping,
Chris
