Project Double Trouble - Max Maniac Two

Project Double Trouble - Max Maniac Two - 12/28/14 05:13 AM
OK so this year racing was not good to me. Had the car out 3/4 times and trouble every time. So after sitting at Norwalk in September I made a vow that I would get the 63 FIXED and I also will either have a spare engine or a spare race car for 2015 or both. Looks like a spare race car coming for now. My friend Dave (DoubleD) has also decided to get back in the game. So pulling out the 64 car thats been sitting in the corner for about 12 years or so - we are going together to build a spare car. Details as we figure it out but should be able to run NSS in the 11.0 or maybe 10.50 bracket and be a street car. It will be my spare and Dave will also use it and maybe even his son John. Heck my wife can drive it too as long as my car is still running
Going to be a kind of budget build using many parts that I have been finding in my garage along with a few new goodies. Dave is in charge here so he can do what he wants
Knock the dust off and get started ----
Hmmmm - wonder if Dave remembers how to stage and race a car

This is the engine that came out of it. I told Dave we could put on some chrome valve covers and them newfangled do dad plug wires and it should go 11's.
He looked at me kind of strange

Somebody would probably have given you $500.00 for those 'original' transmission cooler lines,,but you bent them.

Re: Project Double Trouble - Max Maniac Two - 12/28/14 05:47 PM
I may be a little rusty at driving but - I am sure I will figure it out again
We got lots of parts
Pistons - very light Mahle 520 grams
Eagle crank and rods - somewhere north of 500"
Heads - Choices - two versions of EZ's
Intakes take your choice of crossrams, tunnel rams and Mod Man or (gast) a single four barrel
A couple roller cams to choose from
A spare 727 and three converters
It like shopping at Summit!
Just time to get busy

Hmmmm... I'd go with the tall ram and the bigger EZ's but then you would have to go with the tall wedge scoop(not a big fan of the tall ones) they look like a couple newspaper mailboxes stuck to the hood
Sounds like a fun project

I was thinking of putting a set of NOS fogger nozzles on it and just using the two barrel carburetor to start it and drive to the line - I bet it would go mid 11's once or twice!

Russ, know you battled lot of bad luck last year, you and I were in the same boat. Your taking it pretty serious though going to a multi car team with a Hired Gun for a driver and blocker. Don't know if NSS is ready for that. We'll all be watching to see if we see any cases of "team orders" when the Konkowski team cars roll up into the lights together. As long as you don't have the whole class complaining about the Konkowski Multi Car Team, sounds like a good plan.

Glen, Doug and Casey - we need to team together to take on that "Team Thug" group that has won the NSS Championship for the last 2 years in a row and gunning for a 3 peat!
Anyway we are working on the car. The block is at the machine shop right now and should get it back soon. In the meantime we are starting on all the other stuff such as ====
Getting ready to start cleaning up the engine bay:
Interior is out and have to start working on the "roll bar" install:
Front suspension coming apart for a rebuild and disc brake install:
Leaning towards this intake to start with
but me thinks if we go to a different intake and depending on the final engine build maybe we should put in a "roll cage" instead of a bar
Alot of work to do but hoping to be ready this summer - we shall see.

It was recently announced that NSS will have their own class at the independently promoted Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals...from Michael Beard of Loose Rocker:
Nostalgia Super Stock was a part of the original US Class Nationals, and from the beginning of the Northern Class Nationals we've had requests to include Nostalgia Super Stock in our program. This year, we will do so.
2nd Annual Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals
August 21-23, 2015
National Trail Raceway - Hebron, OH
This is the week before the NMCA event at Norwalk, so teams could make a swing out of things. The race will have live video coverage on MotorManiaTV.com
The plan would be for 2 qualifying runs Friday and 2 qualifying runs Saturday. NSS racers would be permitted to enter Saturday's NitroPlate S/SS Combo Warmup. NSS will have its own eliminator on Sunday. The entry fee would be in the $100-$120 range for $1,500 to win and paying at least 8 places. Naming Rights sponsorship on the class is available.

A little update - the engine is coming together - the short block is done just your basic 512CI with aluminum main caps and a girdle - eagle rotating Assembly balanced at 2230 grams. all machined up and screwed together by Precision Automotive Machine
It will get a set of EZ-1 and a nice special grind roller cam we had developed for the crossram. compression should be a ltlle over 12-1 depending on the final cc of the heads

It's been awhile since we updated the progress of Project Double Trouble - Max Maniac Two - The car had a custom roll bar, frame ties and fuel cell mounted up all installed By or good friend WJ440 (Walt) - we repainted the engine bay - plumbed all the brakes which are now four wheel disk brakes - installed a real nice S60 Dana - we figured the 8 3/4 while good would not live.
The motor and trans are complete - ready to drop in - I need to finish the wiring and plumbing yet and it should be ready to go by April

That much beer and none of us will be running the following day ----
Funny part of this project is Dave has already planned the "next engine" for this car and I have not even blown up the current engine as it has not even been started
I also think he may have to add more bars -
Yep it's a simple project that may be spiraling out of control BUT the car may fit into 2 classes with the new mill

Everything moved, but still unpacking. This year will be sorting out the Wedge and the car to make sure all is good and ready for the Hemi transplant and more then likely over next winter will be the complete transformation to the Hefty.

Re: Project Double Trouble - Max Maniac Two - 05/15/17 05:42 PM
Well here is an update on project double trouble – We got the car out last fall after a series of set-backs for a couple of passes and quickly realized we had the wrong converter and gear – we had used a 9” ATI we had on the parts shelf – it had nowhere near the stall we need and with a 4:10 gear it only compounded the problem the car was a mid-11 second ride with that combo – so over the winter we put in our spare an 8” ATI and a new 4;56 gear – took the car out to Quaker over the weekend and it definitely liked that combo with a 10.77 @125 with 1.45 sixty foot wheels up! - pretty much where I thought it would run with the factory cross-ram and 34 degrees timing. Not bad for a 3800+ lb whale with a full factory interior on cal tracks and 9” slicks. A little tuning will probably net a tenth or so – maybe add an INDY bathtub cross-ram somewhere down the line and that would put it solid and cover the 10.50 index. But this engine will be short lived in the car - the 572 HEMI is being built at BEST Machine and will replace the 512 sometime later this year – as it becomes a replica of the Hefty HEMI. But for now Russ will race the car at Bowling Green this weekend as the strictly business 63 is not ready yet.

Re: Project Double Trouble - Max Maniac Two - 09/16/17 02:31 AM
Time for an update - the car has been real consistent so far this year even with two different drivers. The 512 wedge has a factory cross ram and - likes to stay in the 10.65 - to 10.75 range with a MPH at 128 - the converter is not quite right for the car - but it works for now. Not bad for a 3800 lb car with a full interior - there is more ET in this combo - but its time to take it out and move on with Plan B - The HEMI ! The engine is almost complete - Best machine got the nod - and I am thrilled so far! It will be on the dyno soon.

Well the HEMI is Home and in the engine bay - Lots of work yet to go - new torque converter, headers to get coated - add a few bars to the roll bar to make it a cage - probably going to change the rear suspension to a ladder bar - and hopefully get the rest of the car painted before spring!
The HEMI made 870 HP at 6900 rpm and 740 ft-lbs at 5600 rpm with two box stock 800cfm eddies - I am more than happy with those numbers! Best Machine built a durable killer engine!
This car started as a budget build - that concept got lost somewhere along the way! But we are having some fun!

Nice build. Close to mine. My 528' Hemi made 853@7100 & 691@5400 but mine is a 10.5:1 Pump gas street engine. My car will be mostly strip but will still street cruise it.

BUT ---- we never even got a chance to get the 512 Wedge tuned in yet???? Oh well it will make a good back up engine if nothing else. Wonder how long it will take Dave to change direction again -
It's all FUN and can't wait until next spring!!!

You know an injector stack would look cool - but with electronic fuel injection - is that legal in FX??

I can hide the injectors - like I can hide the grid!

It's been awhile since I updated this thread the Hefty has been together for a little over two years and I am having a ball with it - I don't race much just a few events a year - but that was my intent. Since putting the HEMI in the 64 - I have been changing a few things to make the car leave a little better - so first change was a new transmission from Cope Racing Transmission - CRT with his lowband apply valve body and a low gear planetary - I changed the rear gear to a 4:10 from a 4:56 and put in a different converter with a little more stall - that netted solid 9.80's @138 mph. Since the car was still really heavy at 3970 at the line - Over the winter I put fiberglass bumpers and hood on it - that saved about 125 lbs of weight. First time out that netted a 9.65 @142.5 mph - sixty foots are around 1.40 - 1,42 so there is still more there in ET. The BEST Machine HEMI has been flawless - check the valves and change the oil is all I have done. I have another converter to try with a little more stall - but the 9" slicks are probably the next big change, hopefully going to a 10.5 radial should help help with consistency when the track is marginal.

9 inch slicks are tiny. Put the tallest 10.5 it can fit.
Sounds like you are having fun!

I don't think a radial will work on a marginal track, mine never did
