I would like to upgrade my stock rockers from my 440 to an adjustable roller rocker. I have a smaller .480 lift cam, so I am going to use a 1.6 ratio. I have heard Crane rockers are the best for the buck vs. cheap ones that will just break or expensive ones that I do not need. How about Comp rockers though? Do they have the same quality as Crane? or.. Thanks.

The crane units are fine on small cams up to .620..I have not used the comps...I would buy Harland Sharp rockers if it was mee.. They will work on bigger cams if you ever decide to upgrade..

i have to agree. in most cases the Harland Sharp rockers arent that much more money and you'll have somthing that will handle just about anything you can throw at them. if you need pricing, please contact me.

For that cam why spend the extra $$ for a roller cam. They will provide no power gain over a good doctile rocker giving a slightly closer ratio. The gain recieved by using a roller in large cams come from helping to prevent side loading. Here is a quote from Dulcich on the subject.

Comp's Pro Magnum rockers are available only in 1.5s.
The Cranes will work OK in the 1.6, but you'll need to check closely for enough pushrod-to-cylinder head clearance through the full range of lift.
Also, if you're still using unmodified OEM heads, make sure you have enough clearance between the top of the guide / valve seal and the bottom of the retainer at max lift w/ the higher ratio. IIRC, .500"-ish is about the point where OEM guides that haven't been cut down can be an issue.

OK, I'm curious why the Crane's are limited to .620 lift?

OK, I'm curious why the Crane's are limited to .620 lift?
because as the lift increases, so does the need for a heavier spring. the cranes will only handle just so much pressure.

I'm happy with the Comp steel rockers but they're 1.5 only, and the shafts are on intergalactic backorder so if you decide to get them, it's probably going to be awhile.
For a .480 lift cam I'd probably just dig up an old set of Isky iron rockers, cut them all to the same width (because out of the box the width dimensions are all over the place), and would just run them instead. That way you get the advantages of adjustability for a couple hundred bucks, instead of 5 hundred.

didnt think there was but I dont know BB stuff).

Yes there are Mike, Crane 64771-16. They would probably work perfect but I have never used them...just the old Isky stuff they no longer make.

I have seen the Crane, and in fact have some 1.5 Golds, but not on the engine. I thought my .480 lift cam would benefit with a 1.6 giving a .512 lift. I also saw some Comp rockers (similar to the Crane, not the iron ductile style) on ebay that are 1.6 and about $100 cheaper than a new set of 1.6 Crane, but was worried about durability. I have edelbrock RPM 84cc heads and valves etc. but already know the 1.6 will work with my geometry.

The Cranes will only handle so much spring pressure and lift. They are clearanced fit to shaft..No needle bearings at shaft..Aluminium fatigue easy when riding bare against steel shafts with high spring pressure...Where Harland Sharps have needle bearings to ride on at the shaft..Also the crane units will have a clearance problem on larger diameter springs, they will hit the outside edge of the retainer on the bottom side...

I have, and in a similar application (a small hydraulic street cam). They worked fine.

I've run cranes for 5 years, Drag only .680 lift roller , no problems so far.
My friend changed from this cam. to one with a little more duration and lift. 690 ? and he pealed a few off the shaft. He went to T&D s.
The cranes are a good rocker for the price.

I'm using 1.5 Crane Golds with a solid 631 roller and 84cc Eddy heads on my 511.

I dont know how many passes are on my crane golds.Over 600 easy.

Sure, they're 8.550 long, 5/16, .080 wall, one piece pushrods made by CV products and purchased from
Porter Racing Heads.

Since that time they produced more than one and a half million Crane aluminun rocker arm.
This statement was in 1986.
Today can be 2 millions.
I think they proved their reliability...

i used a set a while back. when 440 source first came out wittem. they were my customer's idea, and his engine so i used 'em under slight protest. they've got about two years of service on 'em with a mild flat tappet solid cam, aboot .600 lift, no probs yet. the shafts were filled with polishing compound, and i had to pull the plugs and clean them. what a mess!

I just got a set of the PRW 1.6 iron rockers for a 496, they look nice! they're also available in 1.5 and 1.7 ratios, i was surprised to see that. their website has them listed for $399, when i called the rep told me the price was now $450 but he'd honor the web price, i thought that was damn decent. and just a few days ago i was installing them and broke one of the cup adjusters, a phone call and they're sending me some more for free. people on the pontiac forum have used prw rockers and like the brand so far.

Sometimes you can find Indy/Dove SR rockers pretty cheap in the race section...Seems I recall a used set of there...They can usually be had in the $300-$400 range. And work pretty well with about any typical "Big" solid flat tappet cams.
There was a set in the classifieds, but cant recall the details, or even if they were SR style...
Just a thought.
