I need to change my distributor (MP of the late nineties).
Currently I'm using a MP Chrome Box.
What do you recommend?
Do I keep my ignition system and also do a total change?

your budget will dictate where your next move will be. plenty of people out there using stock recurved distributors and plenty using all after market stuff.
What are your goals with the motor?

I don't want a race car. I will not compete, I just want a nice car that run well and put the best parts I can.

D.U.I. All inclusive 1 wire hook up( 2 with the tach ). Adjustable mech & vacuum advance. Puts out 50K plus. Rev limiter and other options available.

Why do you "need" to change your distributor?

Whatever. You could do far worse than buying the Firecore stuff, the guy's a board member and seems to be straight up. The distributor is supposed to be really easy to set up.

I would disagree with the Unilite, it's too easy to lose the lite and a replacement one is quite expensive.

Been using the Unilite's since 1981 and have never lost a light. Have one in my current car. Been in there since 2002.

The ONLY two ways to kill the photocell is to jump start the car with the dizzy plugged in, or to try and start a dead battery with a battery charger. You can buy a $40.00 filter as well.

They are virtually bullet proof, but evidently not idiot proof as many have killed their photocells doing exactly what Mallory has said not to do since the Unilite was intorduced.

I GAVE my POS unilites away dual ballast eye burning junk.
I was getting them complete at cost, and after the second eye died I had had enough because the eye was costing me 25$ less than a whole new dizzy.
Then the new mopar performance distributors were made by Mallory and the advance weights are believed to be to light however the two I have work fine.
I have an MSD pro billit and it works well, the MSD Ecurve works very well for me and super easy to tune.
I believe you would do well with a Firecore as well.The only experience I have had with them the service was exceptional the quality superb.

So you "heard" all these horror stories but have no experience in the topic, and you feel obliged to post?

Next time you give away a Unilite, hook me up bro. I'd take them all.

BTW and FWIW...you DO NOT use the ballast with a Unilite...............but you already knew that, didn't ya?

I sold more unilite distributors than probably anyone in the country for about a 4 year period. Plenty of those cells died, it's a fact of life with electronics.

Only HP matters... LMAO...

I bought a Unilite because they were reasonably priced..
it ran about a month at the track.. sent it back to
the manufacturer for warranty... they said I was to
rough on it and it was not covered.. I told them it
was on a race car... finally I told them to keep the
POS and I bought a MP one.. I have a MSD on one engine
and a couple of MP ones on others... if I need another
for anything I will purchase a Firecore.. Rich has
always been good to me

You lost me here and with your goals. Are you looking for an easily adjustable mechanical advance limiter? If so, that's easy to fix if you're willing to take it apart. It can be limited by welding or brazing the slot, installing a preslotted plate (such as sold by FBO).

Yes some aftermarket distributors make adjusting the advance limit easier. So that is an option too.

The two distributors you picture are rather different. One has no vacuum advance and will require the later style spark plug wires, and your going to have to add a connector for the signal/trigger wires. The other has a vacuum advance and requires nothing else to hook up to your existing system.

As far as the ECU goes, there were several different Chrome boxes made over the years. Might be useful to see if there is any number on it and then ask if someone can check the Mopar Engine Book. It's probably fine for street use. Hot rod parts are not always made better than stock. Sometimes they are better for racing, sometimes they are better on the street too, sometimes they are neither.

To the OP. You can't beat a stock distributor for reliability. If you want quick advance. $2.90 for a set of springs.

The MP is also very nice. No complaints with MSD unit. It's your money.

Firecore is the best bang for the buck and easy to curve and lock out.Billit,bearings and can use mopar parts that you can get at any good parts store.And it helps that Sparkey(Rick) is a great guy to deal with.
