BB hyd roller performance?

BB hyd roller performance? - 01/06/09 06:59 PM

Anyone running one of the new Comp hyd roller cams yet in a big block? The new cams use the XFI lobes and are making good power in other engines. I don't recall anyone posting any kind of results on here yet though with a Mopar big block.

I'm probably going to slide one of the 292HR cams into my 505 motor just to see what it does. If I was at 800 hp with the 266/272 solid roller cam I wonder what it will do with the slightly smaller HR grind? Maybe 725 hp??

I'm getting ready to run this 505 BB with the 440 Source heads, 9.8:1, DP intake, 1000HP carb, and Comp custom hyd. roller with XFI lobes. 236/242 @.050 with .540 lift on a 112 lca.
I should have it going today, and probably #'s tonite....

Sounds like a good combo, I'll be interested to hear how it works out.

Hughes has got some mega-aggressive Hydraulic rollers and they love to rev!! Perfect for high compression strokers.

I didn't even know that Hughes was selling hyd roller cams. I'll have to check it out.

brace yourself- they're really expensive. i'm sure they're worth every penny, though.

I don't know who grinds them for Hughes but they are the most serious ramps I've seen cut for any Hydraulic roller.....they're almost square and they're on a pretty small base circle...in fact when I looked at it I said "no way the lifter will ride this without collapsing the hydraulic plunger"....7200 RPM later I have to say that for my motor I give very little away to a solid roller (except lift maxes out around .600) and with the Chaps flowing more at .500 than most heads flow at .650 it's a perfect fit for my mostly street car. In fact most people don't believe it's a hydraulic at all...they shake their heads and say "no way a juicer rev's that quick".

I was all set to buy a solid until I saw these, yeah they cost but they work and I figured since i already had the Hydraulic lifters overall I still came out ahead...as long as they deliver...I feel like they do IN SPADES!!

What are you using for rockers ?

Hughes "victor" rockers....Indy Exhausts 1.6 rocker ratio.

Hey Streetwize, what are you running for closed and open spring pressures? I am running 175 lbs. closed and 465 lbs. open @.600. BTW, I'm not running a Comp cam, mine is from Scott Brown. Just curious to see what Comp wants for spring pressures.

Well...that's a deep subject!!
This is the guy that wanted lots of TQ, and driveability and he also wanted to make it look very stock. He supplied me with a stock type oil pan and I told him I didn't think it would work. I was afraid the oil would get sucked up around the crank at higher rpms.
Well looks like I need to insist that either my customers listen to me or they pay...$$$!
I made 2 short pulls from 3000-4000rpm and everything looked good. 603ft.lbs. at 4000 rpm!!
So off to 5000 rpm we go, and just above 4200rpm, the oil pressure started to drop. So I aborted the pull and called him so he could now order the right shi-stuff and be done.
Lesson learned for me...again.
But it looks like it'll clear 520HP so that is nice!
I won't have any more info for at least a week, but 600+ TQ with 9.8:1, mild ported Source heads and that custom hyd. roller cam. And this thing revs as quick as my 360 did!! It sounds very healthy. This was with our cheap dyno/hooker 1 7/8 headers given to us by a friend of mine.
And the carb was still rich, and we hadn't even tried any timing adjustments. So there's more to come.

I will post results when we have them, and hopefully a video as well.
I'm happy with the XFI lobes so far!

Keep is informed of how it turns out.

My next project is the 505 440 stroker with the source 4.25" crank, 7.1" rods, and 10:1 pistons with Stealth heads. Thinking of using mild hydraulic roller cam, as this is for the convertible and I want to keep it looking fairly stock. I haven't decided if I will run stock manifolds or headers, and not sure on the intake, although a 6-pack would look cool.

They appear to be Bullet grinds. At least comparing the numbers they look to be the same as the Bullet CRA hyd roller grinds.

Re: BB hyd roller performance? - 01/07/09 07:07 PM

Looks like you might be correct. That Bullet master list is a little overwhelming. They have about 20 different lobes with 254 duration at 0.050. Those same lobes vary in duration at .200 from 144 to 174! So you're talking about a huge amount of variation from 20 lobes all with the same 050 duration. Then add on top of that the fact that they have tons of different 050 durations and it looks like a guy could get lost pretty quickly in that list.

Kelob....IIRC my springs are right in the same range as yours and they were also from Scott, same ones I ran on my 508 252/258 roller that was in the car before the new motor.

I was told by Comp Cams to not run more than 400 lbs open on thier hydraulic roller lifters I set the seat pressure right at 200 lbs which made 395 to 405 lbs open, I hope they don't find out I cheated by 5 lbs open That was on a new 426 Street Hemi World block street motor, it seems to rev good and no valve float yet up to 6500 rpm, where the owner wants to shift it at

How do the XFI lobes compare to the XE lobes?

Interesting info from Comp Cams about the open pressure. Looks like I'll just make it as the open pressure on my set up will be 375 lbs.

Re: BB hyd roller performance? - 01/08/09 11:38 PM

I got a reply from Comp on their hyd roller lifters. They said they are capable of pushrod oiling so that is cool. I'm going to run the hyd roller cam with the Jesel rocker arms so pushrod oiling is a big plus. Probably not too many people mix hyd roller cams and Jesel rocker arms but I have my reasons.

Re: BB hyd roller performance? - 01/09/09 01:56 AM

Cab,

Interestingly Scott Brown specifies Crane lifters (not Comp) and runs higher (maybe 50 pounds over the nose)spring pressures, apparently it's the lifters and noty the cam itself that are the limitation

All I know is this combination revs to 7K with Ti Retainers and 11/32 stem long valvess and pretty spot on geometry...and it doesn't seem to give up much of anything to comparable solid rollers I've run.
