Yeah I know but I just like the look of the bigger tire, and not really building for a tire size limited class.

Think thats due to gearing or rotating mass/weight?

The pro is just that much better of a tire, newer design and compound then the orginal tire. I switched gears between the tires 4.30 with 30" tall radials and 3.91 with 28" tall pros. It's better all over 60' and et and mph.

Well, I dont have the $$ to be the fastest guy on radials anyway. I will be plenty satisfied with an 8 second time slip framed in the trailer and a car that looks bad ass!

Re: Demon build - 11/24/14 06:36 PM

I'll be following your progress, wanting to do the same but with a 325 50 15 M/T Drag radial, which isn't quite as tall as yours, so I am hoping to get away with not having to cut on the fenders, just a mini tub.

I am not sure how big a 325/50 15 Drag Radial is but I ran a 28/10.5 15W under my Demon with stock wheel wells. The leaf springs were moved in 3 in.

Moved the front half of the quarter opening 1 1/4 inch. Looks like just a slight massage on the rear of the opening will be in order. Going to notch the rear rail and box it back in to give me another inch to the inside and the 315 will slide way up in there where it belongs!

315/60-15 drag radial on a 12 inch Champion beadlock rim. They are 30 inch tall.

Re: Demon build - 11/25/14 04:28 PM

That's the same tire/wheel size I have on my Demon. The frame rails are in the stock location, wheel well and fender opening was opened up and a new bead rolled around the fender lip.

cool build. gonna look awesome when you have it sitting down.. whats the rear suspension plans?
Posted By: rgreule

Re: Demon build - 11/25/14 05:42 PM

also if you planning on making it sit low id put a standard tub in there.. and cut out the outer wheel house.. the outer curve in so soon that you can get much tire tucked up in there..

here is mine with a 325/50/15

i had to do a normal tub to get mine to sit low..

Calvert split mono leaf long front segment(24-26inch not decided yet) moved inside rails with sliders. Smith assasin bars (similar to caltrac but lots more adjustment). Anti-roll device. Virtical mount da Afco's custom valved.

I thought about that but decided to spend way to much time sectioning and moving metal around to make it look like a stock tub. Didnt want to loose the structure support that goes from top of the outer wheelhouse to package tray/quarter area as this is not going to be a full tube car. I will be doing some mod to outer in the curve as well. Tons more work but it will be slick when I get it done. Also it wont be quite as low as yours but close.

Re: Demon build - 11/25/14 07:14 PM

i know alot of people that dont have anything going to they're package tray support and havent had anything weird happen.. i was a little sceptical at first when i cut mine.

also digby's dart is cutting 1.12 60' with the stock 20 inch segments. on a 275. . with basically with the same stuff you have.. srd bars, arb, springs on the rails with sliders..

i would call mencer for your shocks he revalves afco DA's for leaf spring setups..

love the build man.. im in for more pictures..

Re: Demon build - 12/02/14 06:40 PM

Lip cut off frame rail and ground flush. Rail squeezed parallel, roughly these rails are over 3/4 inch wider at top than at the bottom, bent floor over edge of rail now they were parallel and welding it back up. Gained a little more room and will be able to set the inner tub in a bit further now. These 315's will be tucked up nicley inside what will look like a facroty tub, just wider

Re: Demon build - 12/02/14 06:47 PM

Calvert split mono's ordered this morning to my specs and Smith Assassin bars on the way as well. Now to finish up the tub on this side, duplicate quarter pannel and tub mods on passenger side then fab up custom cross member with adjustable front spring pocket and rear adjustable slider mounts.

The 275 Pro is a bad biotch, no doubt..........but BETTER than the 315?...highly unlikely. If it was, RvW and ODR cars would be using them......they don't if given a choice.

How are you planning to attach the wheel tub to the rear quarter panel?
Posted By: tubtar

Re: Demon build - 12/07/14 08:43 PM

Another sweet build.
I need to open up my front wheel wells???? because the AlterKtion moving the wheels outward put the pass. side into the front of the opening on full lock right turns.
I kept the stock rear wells , but added 3 " and moved them to the rails in my '65.
It looks pretty close to factory.
No where near as ambitious tire wise , but 295-55's fit in there with change.

Keeping to stock outer tub in place with a little massaging of the lip. Adding 3 1/2 inches and moving inner tub just flush with the rail after the rail it's self was modified.

You did an outstanding job fitting that trunk hinge panel.......however, that panel is pretty darn flexible, so it sure would have been easier to cut it off square, pull it over a tick and just weld it across the top...........LOL!!!!..........May have cut that 73 times to 2 or 3..........LOL!!!

Would have been easier but inner tub moved over 3 1/3 inches into this panel. The trunk lid tortion bars would have had to been shortened if I moved the panel over with the tub. There were a few cold ones and a lot of staring at it before grinder went in hand LOL. I wanted it to look like it was made like that.

No, I wasn't suggesting moving the hinges. If you look at the very first pic you show.......the hinge panel appears to come down at a bit of an angle towards the center of the trunk. If you had cut the hinge panel straight across the bottom and then just pulled it over a little, you could have welded it directly to top of tub............I know because I have done a few of these..........LOL!!!........but again, your fitting job is outstanding

They will be somewhat flat with a soft radius to match curve of the body. Looking down the side of the car they will be flush and not stick out at all. Sort of a custom touch I think will look cool and different.

Gonna fab up a dolly for the front, eliminate all the visible pinch welds on the rails, trans area and smooth firewall some. Then drop all the stock front suspension in favor of one of Bob's front end kits.

Man, talk about deja-vu! I even modded my seat back similarly. FYI, you can mount a 2nd gen Neon wiper motor BEHIND the firewall and keep wipers if you desire. OK I promise I wont crap on this awesome thread again...

I was going to look into some sort of aftermarket hot-rod type wiper motor for behind firewall. What year's on the Neon wiper notor? Did ya have to fab up new linkage to the arms? I couldnt tell ya a 1st gen from a 5th gen Neon. LOL

Wiper motor was off a 2001, IIRC 99-2003 neon are same. I cut both arms in two and welded old arm to new arm, then built a mount on inside of firewall mimicking the stock angle for the motor. I can get you a pic if you want tonight.

I have a similar setup in my pro street demon but I'm using a wiper motor from a late 90's early 2000's dodge ram 1500. It's small but powerful and I only had to take about 1/4" out of one of the linkages. It works great.

Nice I like it, reliable setup and hidden and cheaper than aftermarket hot-rod stuff. win win. Thanks

Really wanted to retain usable wipers for possibility of doing drag week.

Does your cage have a dash bar hidden under dash?
Posted By: 72Swinger

Re: Demon build - 01/13/16 04:48 PM

Yes it does, pillar bars are as far forward as possible and through dash. Had to notch the pedal brace for crossbar but I retained full use of glovebox to.

Thanks for the pic, in research phase of AC/heat systems now. Really mostly to get windshield to defog properly and AC would probably be nice on drag week. I remember going late rounds in the roadrunner at night and windshield would fog if big drop in temp like that year at Norwalk running till wee hours.

Re: Demon build - 02/13/16 01:07 AM

There are some extremely fast radial leaf cars running on 2 inch lowering blocks but yes its part of the adjustability. Will probably pull one or two out at final race weight to get ride height I want. They are 1/2 inch each.

Thanks guys, I dont know how I have managed to never hear or read about this! Did some research and scared the hell out of me! Thankfully that was the first piece I did with the brake cleaner and it is not my usual routine. It was just handy on the bench. The piece sat for a day or two after I cleaned it before I welded it in the car and it was wiped completely dry wit ha clean rag. I always turn on the garage ventilation system before I weld too so hopefully I'm ok.

I had Bob mod the column for me while he was building my front suspension. Basically he takes the shaft out and cuts the splined end off and puts it in a lathe and turns it to fit a piece of 3/4 moly tube and welds it together. Then cuts the column at the mesh crush area and installs a bushing. The firewall bearing carier is pretty much self explanatory in the previous pics.

Probably quicker on FB as it pings my phone. Absolutely nothing set in stone on the motor build yet except that motor plate & custom Charlies oil pan I just had made that should be here any day. Would like to use these Arrington CNC eagles I have but Tietecks or however its spelled are not out of the question depending on direction I go with build. Goal is mid 8's & bulletproof enough for drag week.

Re: Demon build - 11/30/16 09:56 AM

Awesome build you have going on here Dave!!! I LOVE it and wish I could do another car.
The only thing I would have done different is to put button head dzus fasteners on the aluminum in the back seat area and rear window area. If for some reason you needed you could take them out to clean, repaint, reclear them, or whatever.
The ones without the oval plate attached to them, just the center part of the dzus.
Again, I am not trying to say it is wrong your way just saying that it would make life easier down the road if you need to remove them.
Nice car Dave and keep up the Great work and the photos.
David

Re: Demon build - 11/30/16 10:00 AM

I found a photo of my car when we built it. Dzus fasteners like these I did on my grey car Dave. I removed the whole center part of the floor if I needed to work on the rear, the trans, etc.
It was super easy to put them in and take them out.

Attached picture grey car 1.png
Posted By: Monte_Smith

Re: Demon build - 11/30/16 10:28 AM

Nothing wrong with removable panels if they NEED to be removable. But just to add the weight, work and cost of dzus fasteners in panels that don't NEED to come out doesn't make much sense.
Posted By: Quickrunner

Re: Demon build - 11/30/16 03:55 PM

Thanks for comments guys. I got the car home last night and could not be happier with the job Gary did on the cage. He was able to execute every little subtlety that I requested on it. The tin in the back will not need to be removable so plan is paint or powdercoat then they will be riveted in after cage is painted. The pictures really don't do it justice, the dash bar between the A pillar bars is a work of art. I can still drop column if needed and remove dash if needed and there is still room for the small vintage air unit and the hidden wiper motor. Glove box door is still functional minus the cardboard box, that will make a nice location for a panel to mount the Dominator EFI.

Re: Demon build - 03/15/17 03:13 PM

I had already removed the pinch weld when I redid the fire wall so that was fine but the Reid case had one high spot that required a 2 inch long by about 1/2 inch deep dent on passenger side of tunnel close to the top. If you look at the pic of the trans its the boss just to the left of the "REID" letters that 's what hit. That may not exist on a stock 400 case I really don't know.

Re: Demon build - 03/21/17 02:59 PM

very nice cross member fabrication ! up i do have a question though. as you are using a poly mount [unless my old eyeballs are seeing something different], i noticed you are not using the "extra" top plat usually enclosed with such mounts. at least the ones i have seen [and the two i have in hand] have this plate that is supposed to be installed between the mount and transmission tail shaft. mine seem to have a slight gap between the poly section and the actual area where the bolts install. is my mount defective, or do i not need the plate ? i have wondered this for years. perhaps you [or others] can shed some insight on this, as i know GM mounts are used in many applications other than those they were designed for.

Assumed it was a shim and not needed. Its an interlocking design and cant come out anyway. Its laying on the bench and I actually pondered putting it in. Didn't seem needed and instructions didn't say squat about it.

The plate keeps the aluminum from eating the poly IIRC.

could you please explain ? shruggy as i'm still in the build stage, i have a cheapo $4 imported mount in place to hold the tail shaft to the crossmember. i suppose the next question would be, does the poly mount have a "shelf life" to when it starts to degrade from age ? sorry for the jack.

Just to be different really, I really liked the look of Jody's 72 gold duster he did with the same kind of bench seat with the fold down armrest. It will all be very cool when its done. I can always fab up some brackets an throw a set of race buckets in if I decide to later, but I wanted the cage to fit around this particular style seat.

Wow, your car looks awesome. Very nice fab skills and ideas. I wish I would've seen this before I started on my Dart, lol. I think you said you are running a 12" rear wheel? With a 315? Do you know what the sectional width is of the sidewall when is on the rim? And what backspacing are you running on the front wheel? I also have a Bob's Profab front end and I'd like to keep the tires tucked in. Again awesome build

Re: Demon build - 10/03/17 04:07 PM

I can measure the section width on the rears.

I'll have to look at my paperwork, Bob said to use 1.75 backspace on the fronts but I may have measured and snuck in 2.0 I will have to check.

No idea why the old pics don't show up? May have to pm a moderator on that

Rest of the exhaust is stainless 3 1/2 all the way to the quarter exit. I have to say thanks to Brian Smith for the great cnc flanges, they made the job easier and could not be any better quality. I recommend a set to anyone building gen3 headers.

Exactly why I went with it, eliminates the heat exchanger in front of rad. Most of their kits say to remove factory exchanger for best results. I obviously went with their builder universal kit. The owner/designer was cool to work with on the phone. Lots of modern blower cars using this setup.

Whipple uses an air to water intercooler under the blower in the manifold, has a -12 inlet & outlet at the back. Look a few pics up to see the Killerchiller unit mounted behind the headlight. Liquid coolant tank, to pump, to Killerchiller, to intercooler, back to tank & repeat. The killer chiller runs in tandem with the small Vintage air unit in the car. It is the real reason i am having AC on the car. its same technology that they use in the new Demon. There is a electronic ball valve that cuts the AC coolant flow to the evaporator under the dash for race mode. But for cruising & drag week the AC will be nice.

My guess these are older pics, the leaves are on the tree still in the other shot of it on the ground. None of my grass or trees look like that right now.

Then cuts the column at the mesh crush area and installs a bushing. The firewall bearing carier is pretty much self explanatory in the previous pics.

This is likely gonna be a question I should know the answer to but who is Bob?
