New 383 Questions?? - 11/09/14 03:40 AM

Just finished getting my 70 383 together and running. It is just getting a small amount of oil in the right side head. The #4 cam was checked and double checked during assembly. It is running good oil pressure 40-50# at idle. How much oil is run thru the heads? Every thing is new just has breakin time on it. Even went back and checked the shaft to make sure it was right, I don't know what to do now. Any body have any ideals? It has all new valve train and oil pump in it Thanks for any help on this. Are you running stock stamp steel rockers or aftermarket adjustable rockers? If stock steel stamp rokers they should be flooded when running, especially at idle If your using adjustable rockers remeber that the rockers get oil every other crankshaft revolution through the cam for a very small amount of time, the higher RPM the less time oiling

It is the stock ones all new with new shafts, I can't figure it out. And the shafts are in it right too, double checked on that too.

I would pull rockers and shafts off both sides, and in shaft bolt hole that feed rockers,i would take a stiff piece of wire(coat hanger will work)and push it into feed hole, should feel it bottom out, then slowly rotate crankshaft slowly by hand, the wire should drops into the cam feed hole,do both sides, but i have seen cam bearing turn inside ,thereby, blocking feed hole or both holes. don

It is oiling on drivers and has good oil pressure so it has to be on one side. I'll pull it off on that side and try it with the wire but if the bearing moved wouldn't affect both sides and the pressure?

Oil pressure at gauge would not change much, slight increase, and if bearing turns just enough ,2 of the holes will still line up some what.if someome has a oil flow diagram for a big block that they can post it would help.

Maybe some one will post a diagram of the oiling system, maybe that would help. I'm ready to junk this sucker. If it wasn't the numbers matching motor I would have done got rid of it.

Remove the right rocker arm asembly and prime the oil pump, hit the starter a little at a time until you see oil squirt out of the next to the last bolt holding the rocker shaft down, if it doesn't squirt out figure out why not Hopefully you have the tools needed to prime the motor with the distributor out
