W-2 porting, are these junk or good? - 10/12/14 02:32 AM

Just picked up some W-2's, wondering if they are wrecked or if they might work?

Another. Most likely done decades ago.

Is that epoxy in one port?
Looks like some tried to copy Bob Lambeck pro stock head. Matt

No epoxy, yet. It does look like really old technology. The workmanship is really good so I suppose it was state of the art for whatever decade it was. They're going onto my son's 360 in his 2500lb Datsun but they look like they'd be happier with some more cubes to feed. I'm glad his car is light anyway.

The bowl is the most important part of it. After flowing literally hundreds of ports like that, I either leave them oval or make them square. Just make sure if you leave them alone (and you should) that your intake exactly matches the port.

I would also make sure they didn't machine the guide boss away. Big flow killer if they did.

Weren't the early W2 actual rectangle ports? Once in a while you still come across them...or the intakes...

Yep the intake matches right now and the guide bosses are there.

The W2 has been a oval port head since they were born in the 70's.
No such thing as a rectangle port W2 head from the factory.

Some porters have made them into rectangles.

Sheldon, Look to see anywere on the head, on the ends to see who could have ported them!!!! I use to work at Diamond Racinr Engines, here in Warren Mi. Those could have come from there!! Butch Elkins designed that head for Mopar, back in the day!!! They started life off the, "T/A", Head!! Let us know, Thanks!!! Dwayne

Thanks Dwayne, I'll check them closer today. The work is really high quality so I do believe they came from a big shop all right.

No stampings from Diamond or anywhere else for that matter. Heads were cast in 77 so the porting is likely old as dirt as well.

You're lucky. I cant cant believe this hasn't turned into a gen 3 thread yet. All smallblock threads normally do. They must be sleeping.

Yep: Either that or why we shouldn't care and just run a Chevy because they are so much better than our stuff.

Clean them, touch up the seats, check the guides, a light surface and go.

And torque those down in small increments. The newer versions have reinforcing ribs around the lower head bolt holes for a reason.

Pressure test then flow test and see were you stand. Should cost you 100-125 dollars est.
