Faceplating A-833 transmission

This topic has been up here before, but I'd like to know anybody's real world experience with a faceplated A-833.

I just sent my input shaft and 3rd gear to Liberty today to get it done.

From what I read, guys are able to drive them on the street without much issue. I do way more street driving in my Dart than racing, but when I race, I want to go all out and not miss gears. I've always had trouble power shifting 4th. Other gears are never an issue.

Got pictures or your experience with Faceplated transmissions?

Anybody every have to clean one up after a lot of use?

I had mine Faceplated 3 & 4.

Shifted like a hot knife going through butter.

I didn't own the trans long enough to "have" to do any maintenance, as I had someone who "had to have" it.

I see more maintenance with a "Pro shifted" gear.

Mine was Race only, and never saw the street.

I just had mine done this spring and really like it, I also syncronized first gear since I drive mine on the street also.

Ive had mine faceplated.
Driven all summer both street and strip.
Very streetable if you learn how to shift.
Not super fun on the street though.
It will last a long time if you never miss shifts.
I had problems with my 4 gear linkage so i missed it a couple of times.
Grinded the faceplates pretty bad.
Fixed it with a grinding dics.
I guess that i want to say that faceplate is the [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] if you can live with double clutching on the street and it will last a long time.

I've heard conflicting reports on how to drive it on the street. Maybe that has something to do with the various sites have ford and gm transmissions that are faceplated.

Some say drive it 100% as you would a syncro'd trans.
Other say, double clutch (shift to neutral, let clutch out, and then push clutch back in, then shift to the next gear).

Some say pull lever as fast as you can. Some say, go very slow when pulling.

Some say let the engine rpm come down and it will fall in, others say that doesn't work.


How do YOU drive your faceplated trans on the street?

I had 2nd Pro-Shifted so I don't typically use it much for street driving. For 3rd and 4th I'll run it to ~2200-2400 or so, clutch, then put a little pressure on the handle and it falls right into gear. It's a bit of a hassle but once you get used to it, it's no big deal. Racing a FP trans makes it worth while. I've tried some of the other shifting methods you mentioned, but didn't like the clashing. For me this works best.

Shift it slow is a no-no.
Its ok to shift it fast but it makes a clunk.
Double clutching and rev matching makes the gears go in smooth.
Took me awhile to learn it though.

I do agree that racing with it makes up for all the hazzle about it.

This is a good post cause I wasnt sure what your suppose to do. I also had the side plate machined too. I end up not using the clutch that much. I got this all put together with new gaskets and such. I have a leak at the bearing retainer I think. Are these prone to cracking?

Ive never had one that was cracked. Did you lube the seal before install?
Sealer on gasket and screwes?

Hmmm pretty sure I thought. I bought this trans used and it leaked the same place before. . That's why I thought might be the retainer I guess. I hate oil leaks..lol

They crack. Buy a billet one.
