torker 383 vs TM6 vs perf rpm - 10/01/14 12:50 AM

im currently running a perf rpm in a 68b-body(3800lbs) 451low deck eddy heads comp XR286 solid roller holley ootb 850.car runs real good 11.12@120 through the tailpipes, air cleaner,no real tunning.im sure i can squeek 10.99 when the good air comes around or if i open the ex but i like to run in full street trim.was just curious if a single plane intake might work better?i know the car is heavy and im limited for hood clearance and intake choices but i have a line on a torker 383 cheap and was wondering if it would be worth trying?has anyone track tested this?ive read some dyno articles on intake comparisons but id like real track input.

I never forgot that a savvy Mopar tech told me decades ago that the Torker has mixture distribution problems (the orig one not the torker II). reportedly (by many many people) the perf rpm is a killer piece even being a dual plane (as you know if you have room for it). The TM6 is a race piece & no exp if it would benefit you or not. Just me I would search elsewhere for some addit'l gain

take a look at this article http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/hrdp_0712_mopar_intake_manifold_comparo/

Yes i read that article and i believe its probably a waste of time even trying it but that was done on a 383 this is 60cubes bigger so im thinking the outcome might be different.

Due to the weight of the car I would stay with the rpm intake.
That being said depending on the rear gear, stall speed, and shift rpm you may benefit slightly at the track with a single plane intake.I think you would still like the drive ability of the dual plane on the street.
I would try the TM6 before the Torker

yes i agree about the weight factor.....the stall is 4900rpm rear gear is 4.10s and shift about 6300rpm go through around 6400rpm or so.finding a TM-6 is possible but im not paying a crazy amount for one.i can get the torker for $100or less.

I have a nice tm-6 I would trade for a m1.

My sons 72 Dart here has a 400 that runs mid 11's with 3.91's and it weighs 3550 with him in it. With the Holley Street Dominator single plane he ran 11.59 @ 117 and with the Performer RPM he ran 11.55 @ 116. Its a street car he drives to the track and he likes the RPM better as he says it feels much snappier down low with the RPM. The single plane did mph better but the RPM was much better in the 1/8 and it was enough to still run a better et with the RPM. I kinda feel the RPM may be your best choice at your cars weight. Course many times in drag racing you cant be sure until you try it. Ron

I would try a 1/2" wood spacer if you have room.

The comparison articles I have seen on B-series intakes have all given the Torker 383 dismal reviews, and the TM6 a middle of the pack grade. The RPM comes out on top pretty much every time for anything but a full on race effort, in which case you'd want to swap for an M1 or Victor.

I like a mildly ported street dominator with a spacer for that motor.

Ron's sons car is a good back to back with the RPM....but remember that's a short stroke 400, a 451 I think would like the single plane better i think if you're already running low 11's. The TM6 is a good piece as well but i just like the SD.

thats interesting since hes only running a 400....proves the single plane makes more hp just slightly down on trq.whats his combo what kinda rpm?i have no room for a spacer woulda loved to try one.i guess if i can pickup something cheap enough it wont hurt to try can always go back.

Like Streetwize said...a Holley street dominator would be another option. It's a shame you can't fit a 1" open spacer on the RPM manifold, they respond well to that.
The Holley SD would be my choice if I was going to try a single plane on your car. Whether it outruns the RPM or not, I'd be interested to see.

Re: torker 383 vs TM6 vs perf rpm - 10/01/14 05:25 PM

Of those intakes I'd try the TM6. Every dyno test intake shootout I have seen the Eddy TM6/TM7 and Holley SD give some of the highest average HP figures at "track" RPM levels.

I have a TM7 on my 440. If you can get a manifold cheap, try it. We can all guess but you need to try it to see what it does if you want the real answer.

well guys it might be next season before i get to try i only have a few weeks of racing left so ill look for one or two of the intakes mentioned over the winter.if i pickup this torker ill let you know the results.im definately going back out though to try and get my 10sec slip with the perf rpm.

Is the TM-6 the same as the street dominator intake? One just sold this week for around a $100 on FABO and looks kind of like a TM-6 in the pic.

Re: torker 383 vs TM6 vs perf rpm - 10/01/14 08:36 PM

Street Dominator, Torker 383 and TM-6 are all old single plane designs.

Read the results and try to figure.

A lot depends on your heads. Note the difference between Part 1 and Part 2, with pretty stock 906s vs MCH Edelbrock heads. That shifted things around a bit.

For the larger engine, I'd look at higher rpm results, especially if you're running some good heads. And if you're not, why bother?

With that stall and gear I would think you could E.T. better with a single plane. There will be carb jetting to look at as well.
A street dominator or TM-6 would work well and if you had room for a tapered 4 hole spacer I would try that on the single plane.
I have a nice TM-6 you can pm me if you like.May pick one or the other up cheap on ebay.

Re: torker 383 vs TM6 vs perf rpm - 10/03/14 01:35 AM

I have both a TM-6 and a Torker and there was no difference in the car running either intake.2 inch open spacer on both intakes.

Re: torker 383 vs TM6 vs perf rpm - 10/03/14 08:16 PM

I had the same experience testing the Torker, TM-6, and M1. The ET's and MPH were all so close, you couldn't say which worked better.
Chrysler Power Magazine did a similar test about 20 years ago when they were running a B engine in their Dart. They tested a Weiand single plane also, but it was slower than the Edelbrocks. The TM-6 was the fastest in their application. The kicker though was the TM-6 they used was modified at the plenum. The corners were rounded to blend the upper plenum into the runners.
A couple years ago I took my stock TM-6 and ported the plenum into the runners at the top only. I use a 1" spacer, and with that small amount work the car was over a tenth faster in the 1/4.
I'm sure the Torker would respond the same way with about 2 hours of work. I also think if you modify it before trying it, the car will go faster than with the Performer RPM.

I thought I just saw a low deck M1 for sale around here or FABO for a good deal.

EDIT: Charger453 has it posted in the race section.

interesting ive read elsewhere that porting the TM6 was worth quite a bit also but it had been welded up etc...as far as teh M1 i seen it for sale im kinda steering towards an eddy intake right now if i could find one fully ported properly id be laughing.
