A good experience with MY engine builder

A good experience with MY engine builder - 01/04/09 01:02 AM

Today I went to my engine builders shop.He showed me how to weigh my pistons and rods on both a digital scale and a more precise 3 bar anologe scale. He showed me how to weigh the big end and small end.He also showed me how to use inside and outside micrometers to measure all my crank journals and block and rod bores for oil clearence. He worked with me to check and recheck my results.Next weekend we are going to install the crank, check for run out,end play and counterweight clearence. We will check all wrist pin to piston and rod clearences and may file fit the rings. He spend time explaning reciprocating and rotating weight and calculating bobweight. We may get to check piston to wall clearence and hopefully do some mock up assembly. This is something I always wanted to learn, and I really appreciate my builder taking the time to help me learn. Many of you know my builder he is much more than just our builder but a great friend to my dad and I.After we get the engine done I'am going to spend some time in his chassis shop an hope to learn some there. gotta give a lot of Respect for someone thats willing to go through all the trouble

I don't know about special , but it was nice hanging out there today. You and Pap have a serious mill in progress. I was drooling over it more than once. The best thing was mine got a good bill of health and got a big from BG. I did ok for a begiiner I guess. Now it is decision time.

Now Bob, you know I have no secrets. I think you have a good handle on things from what I have been reading on here.

Well the bearings looked better than I ever expected. I was kind of upset I tore it down, but I just had to know how it was holding up. BG was going to do a little more looking over the block, but nothing at all looked out of the ordinary except a couple cam bearings he didn't like. They weren't worn bad, just not exactly positioned dead on.

Plans?? Well, I wasn't upset at all with the way the car ran at the track or on the street so I am a little undecided at this point. No secrets here, if anything I am going to throw a little more cam at it in a roller more than likely. The recently announced sale on rockers really helps if I go that way.

I have to talk to a few people, look over some finances, and go from there. A new shiny block like yours is in the plans for the end of next year so not sure how much I want to sink into this one now.

OH, I did survive the Hog Pen. It was an interesting day though, but they always are at the Pen.
