440-3.665 stroke? - 08/27/14 09:10 PM

i got an engine in a trade was told/ it was a 496/440.well the pistons are std stroke srps.it came with a forged crank.on box it said 4.125 stroke.std rods,20 under mains.the rod journals are chevy 2.2 they match the rods grp 6.800 5100 series.on the crank it says std rod/20 mains, well machine shop told me they measured 3.665 stroke on the crank didnt make sense to him he mesured handful of times still 3.665.he was confused as was i.then he told me with the 55 overbore it comes out to 440.im very confused what should i do?i cant find any info about this online.is he measuring wrong?hes been building bad ass race engines for 30 years.its lawrence machine hanford ca.

Should be easy to measure , put the piston at the top of the stoke and measure from deck to piston flat , lower it to bottom of the stoke measure again subtracting the TDC measurement ...

Where did a 3.66" stroke crank come from? A stocker is 3.75"

It was probally offset destroked from the standard 2.375 rod size down to the 2.200 rod journal size, IF it IS Actually 3.66 stroke I' trying to rememer the exact storke that the old Pro Stock 366 C.I. Hemi motors used

Thinking about it, he probably destroked-offset ground it to 3.665 to take advantage of an off the shelf BBC rod/.990 pin piston combo....probably because it was significantly cheaper and lighter than a conventional 440 mopar piston/rod combo for nearly the same cubes

Now just reverse engineer it to figure out what rod and compression height slug combo he had in mind....

it was destroked when they cut for chevy 2.2 rods.i have chevy grp 5100 series 6.800 rods.srp 458 pistons.55 overbore.ported bigger valve closed chamber 516 heads.comes out to 440ci short stroke big bore high rpm beast its pretty cool actually and has about 11.1-12.1 compression.cam with mopar 590 solid cam and lifters.tm7 intake.there was a 404 hemi for nascar some time ago, they destroked a 426 crank to 3.558 i think it was kickin but.machinest said whoever had this wanted it this way everything works together.should be a screamer.
