493" how much carb cfm needed?? - 01/02/09 12:27 PM

I'm building a 493 (440) stroker to put in my 3500lb Challenger. 11:1 compression stage 3 Eddy RPM's .615 lift solid roller with .263 @ .050" with a home ported Holley Street dominator intake 3500 stall with 4:10 gears. This will be mostly street driven. My question is how much actual carb cfm will it take to support this engine using a 4150 base? thanks for any advice.

Since you will be street driving it, I would go with a 950 cfm.

We like the 1050 Holly HP for all our 470" and up engines.

The 950HP worked great on my 451, although not quite as good as the 1050 Dominator, only by a couple hundredths and 2 MPH.
I would probably run a 1050 on your car but the 950 would be better on the street as already mentioned.

Does anybody here run a 1050 4150 carb? I've always wondered how they run compared to a Dommy on the street and strip.

The reason I posted actual cfm is I was wondering how a stock 950-1000 Holley or proform flow as compared to a 850 that has been cnc'd and professionally worked over. I have a chance to buy an 850 and was wondering if it will be big enough.

It will work. You may give up a little power to a 1000 or larger.
If yours has been worked it may flow more than 850.

As stated by others, the Dominator will be faster on the track. But I like the 4150 for the street.

The hard part is knowing what every companies carb actually flows (using the same standard). And I don't have that info. All 950's don't flow the same, and they don't even have the same venturi size! They all have 1.75" baseplate/butterfly, but Holley's venturi is 1.375, Proform 1.45" (their 850 is 1.40"), and who knows what custom carb shops are using in their 950, or 1000 cfm. The old style mod of machining off the choke horn from the main body is not as good as the more modern HP main bodies cast without the choke horn and a better transition.

My recommendation is to call ProSystems and have them setup one of their 950 or 1000 hp carbs.

If you're going to use a 4150, make sure it's based off of the 850DP, like a 1000HP. As the others have already mentioned, the 1050 dommy will out perform the 4150 at the track and is still streetable.

my old setup was just like that in my challenger I ran a solid roller with a little less dur but I had more lift that you.. I ran a TM7 with the 4500 adapter and a custom BIGS 1050 Dominator carb.. runs great on the street...

I like the 1000hp on most 500's.

I run a Pro-systems 1000HP 4150 on my 517 that runs a Dommy 3 circuit metering block and it is FANTASTIC on the street. I've been giving serious thought to putting a big 1100+ Dommy on it but I don't know if the modest gains are worth the added cost....I think my days of chasing the last .05 of ET days are winding down......you can see more variation in performance just in the weather on any given day.

Put the car on the Dyno and you may quickly see if the induction is really laying it down....but with Eddies and a Sreet Dominator I don't think you'll need anything more than a 1000HP.....I ran the same carb on my SD topped 508 jetted down a tad. Dyno time is relatively cheap for the wealth of knowledge about your combination you can get from it.
