(Another) Race car on the street

(Another) Race car on the street - 07/15/14 03:58 AM

I finished updating the car to "street specs" last Tuesday. All the lights work, it has an "exhaust system", bigger fuel cell, etc. Most importantly it is legally licensed and insured!

This is a poor quality pic of me driving it home.

Took it to a local monthly car cruise Saturday. Still has the 14:1, roller cam, slicks, wheelie bars, and alcohol Dominator complete with 2 mpg economy.

Arrrrrggghh!! My simple cell phone pics are too big for this site. Oh well, to be continued...... later.

Isnt it great to just go for a drive. It will slow you down a bunch but a 3" exhaust with cutouts to unleash the power at the track is a great addition

Never said it was practical. I just wanted to get it out of the garage a few times this summer. It has been collecting dust for the last couple of years.

At some point I'll have to figure something out, but for now it's a blast just the way it is....

How could it NOT be a blast.............street driving is usually WAY more fun than racing for me these days...........enjoy.

Awesome! Isn't it great to get it out again, even if it's just putting around on the street.

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/15/14 12:37 PM

fantastic looks like a awsome streetcar:D

you might want to think about trying a E85 dominator instead,if E85 is available in your area.

Very nice! Definitely a lot more fun driving on the street. I drove a 14.5:1 big block on the street for 3 years, lol.

You guys that do this are awesome! Mine is too far gone to put on the street!

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/15/14 04:14 PM

Yup... have the same problem. Pulling the KOS 499 and dropping in my new 540 now. I would like to run 3 1/2 exhaust all the way as the Proparts headers have a 3 1/2 collector. Would be nice to find a 3 1/2 X pipe but may do an H crossover instead. Problem is that 540 also has 13.9-1 and too much cam (Indy R2) so still on C-16. I'll run it a while that way then drop in less cam and dished pistons.

Anything can be run on the street if set up properly UNLESS you have a crazy agressive lobed spring eater cam then things change.............DO IT T.

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/15/14 06:08 PM

That's Awesome! I said over 20 years ago when I first started making my car go faster that I would always keep it street legal. There is just an extra level of fun to be able to drive your race car on the street.

Bunch of places have 3.5" x pipes.

Pypes Perf, spin tech or get two 3.5" 90* bends and whip one up.

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/16/14 03:20 AM

My days of open headers and slicks screwed to the rims on the street might be over , but my days of drag radials and 3" X piped exhaust are about a week away from beginning.
I really appreciate anyone who runs a beast like this on the roads.

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/16/14 04:19 AM

My truck has always been tagged and insured and driven on the street. I don't have the big compression but it does or has had .767/.676, 288/292@ .050 cam, tunnel ram, 4.56 gears, I have run a 6200rpm stall convertor at one time. It has a 3-1/2" exhaust system and mufflers and they're at least 1/2" to small. I don't think twice about driving it 100 miles to an event, cruise nite or whatever. Dave

Maryland Speed is where I bought my Dougs 3 inch electric cutouts.
They have the best price that I could find, $359.95 with free delivery.

They were $100 cheaper (or more) than any other place that had them.

It cool that you'll be able to cruise it on the Street.

Could never get a car like that on the street legally in Australia!

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/16/14 03:36 PM

I have 3" on my SB powered fish. The KOS 499 had that huge 4 1/2" system which was very heavy and not that quiet. I think I will have our local ex fab guy put together a simple 3 1/2" H pipe. Should be plenty of clearance as the frame is already notched for exhaust pipes. Gonna go with dumps like da fish has.

I am sure glad Hardesty / Robbins left the car wiring in so the lights / flashers still work. Need to put in a pass side window regulator so that glass window works. Maybe tint the read side windows so the bars and data system don't show as much.

Looks great Mark!

I'd like to have this X-pipe on my car someday to quiet it down on the street and then have some electric cutouts on it for fun.

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/17/14 03:15 AM

Just had mine inspected today...

Is your tire pressure good? Yup, 10 in the back, 35 in the front.

How bout the PCV valve, is that working? Yup, hooked up the the vacuum pump

Guess your good to go

I spent 45 min's last night trying to find where I hid the 4-way flasher under the dash... Not so easy to look under ther with the cage LOL

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 07/17/14 03:36 AM

No good pic of the exhaust yet, but I have 4" collectors reduced to a section of 3.5" pipe, bullet mufflers, and turn downs near the end of the door. It's loud, but I'm kind of stuck because they are fenderwell headers and the only way to get the exhaust further back would be to go under the frame rails.... not happening.

Back to resizing pics now....

Here is the actual "Mopar Row" at last Saturdays cruise.

Steve Hempel's awesome restored 68 Charger R/T with a big block Indy Hemi.
Roger Mallinkrodt's original A12 440 Six Pack Roadrunner
My street car....
70 340 'Cuda
Dodge Rumble Bee truck

Pretty colorful group for a local gathering.

Bigcubes window decal reminded me to post this pic. I had this rolled into my tin work when we back halved the car. Great minds think alike...

What part of town was this cruise at? St. Charles/St. Peters area? The West County/South County/Jefferson County scene is getting a little boring...need to take in something different.

It's in St. Charles at West Clay and Duchesne. It is held the second Saturday of the month at JJ's Restaurant Most of the 50's and earlier cars park on the restaurant lot, and the rest of us park on the US Bank lot right across from JJ's.

This Saturday (and every third Saturday), there is a cruise at "The Lot". It's on the North Service Rd. between Cave Springs and St. Peters, just west of where 370 comes off I-70. Even more room there than at JJ's.

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 09/02/14 01:02 AM

OK, so Raff was correct - this alcohol Dominator is KILLING me on the street. 2 mpg and I have been pulling the oil drain plug before every trip to get the excess fuel out of the pan. Best race carb ever, but puts out more fuel at part throttle than the engine will burn.

So I borrowed a C&S Aerosol 950 carb. It is a 4150 style and I have been playing with it on the bench. It is very simple to remove the secondary pump arm and linkage so the secondaries will not open at all. Would this be going too far?

I only drive the car at part throttle, so I just need it to start and idle cleanly. I'm hoping to maybe get 4 mpg and not wash fuel past the rings. Any suggestions?

Re: (Another) Race car on the street - 09/02/14 06:11 PM

You can disconnect the secondaries on the Dominator and turn it into a bid 2 bbl. carb.
