Sealed Up Carb to Scoop....

Sealed Up Carb to Scoop.... - 07/10/14 04:14 AM

I whipped up an air pan to seal the Carb to the hood. It seals up real nice. I even blocked off the back of the scoop, so the only place the air can go is down the carb. Anyone see anything that may cause me problems?

Also, I ran a string from the front of hood to the roof to see where the scoop opening lies, it's above that line, if that means anything.

Looks like it'll work nice... I see you did the old
string trick

Nice work there. I don't know how effective it would be, but will offer a couple of thoughts. You might see some difference if the back of the scoop was unplugged. It all depends on whether the scoop is above the boundary layer coming off the front of the car, and if the air entry is smooth enough for max air flow. The back block off could be run open, holes in it, or screened, to modify the way the air moves around inside the scoop , hopefully to make it as calm as the airflow can be. I used an air cleaner base riveted to the air pan to help this. I also have a very large air filter made out of door screen to keep the bigger rocks out, and maybe keep the turbulence down around the carb inlet. One way to find out how effective your system is would be to build a system for testing that would run without the hood, but incorporate what ever you figure may improve or help air flow. air bell, taller scoop, 14x 6 inch K&N filter, (I just bought one, going on shortly!)
By the way, K&N makes a pretty big rectangular 2 1/2 inch tall filter that just might fit inside your scoop. It has 180 square inches of filter area, which is supposed to flow enough to take care of about 800 hp. They have a formula on their web sight to figure it out.

My scoop was turbulent crazy like till I put some teardrop holes in the back and it`s a 6-pack scoop sealed and is definately pullin in air cos it`s trying to rip it off even at slow 45 mph speeds. I did the string deal also and ideally they say you want the opening ABOVE the string but mines a bit less than 1/2 way..........

Don't overlook connecting the bowl vents with a piece of tubing.

Can I get a play by play on the string trick? Not familiar with it

You run a string from the ft. of the hood up to the roof line and apparently would like the scoop opening above that idealy.......

You want the BOTTOM of the scoop inlet above the string

Have you taken it to the track yet? Curious to hear what it runs!

I've been out twice, with issues that netted no real results. I'm hoping to get out tonite for some T & T, if the weather holds up.

what rear tire are you running?

what is your gear/tire size and converter combo?

I'm using my converter from the big block and either it needs to be loosened up or hit with a shot of nitrous

A Go Pro and a dozen? tuff's of yarn strategically placed would will fill in a lot of the unknowns here, and be a pretty easy test.

I ended up blocking off the back cavity of my scoop like you, and that seemed to help with some turbulence problems that was sucking fuel out of the bleeds of my dominator, hasn't done it since, nice job on the pan, looks professional.

31 x 16.5 ET Street, Ford 9" with 4.57:1 gear, 8" UCC Converter. Even though the last two outings had there issues, I'm pretty sure the car will be getting a gear change to a 5:00 ratio and the converter needs the flash raised. Right now, it's hitting about 5000. Peak torque was at 5200, so I'm thinking of having it raised to 5500, but I'm kinda on the fence with the higher flash, as the car has been seeing plenty of street duty.

I was thinking of doing the same w/ my cowl, wonder if it's worth the effort....

put some tape across it and make a pass or two and see if that helps or hurts it.

could try that, I also need to block off the "cowl vent" to make the cowl actually work as it should.

Blocking the cowl vent helped me when I ran a cowl scoop.............
