W8'ing is the hardest part.... It's alive! - 06/12/14 03:43 PM

It's been a long time coming.... we'll load up and head to IMM in Indio in the am and put the finishing touches on this lil block and dyno it with it's new pipes. Finally seeing the light at the end of an incredibly long tunnel....

Yep,
A bunch of work for 15 more HP than the W5 mill..., but I guess if the water stays where it belongs, it will be worth it!

I would hope it makes more than a max effort 650hp w5 does.

I thought about it, if I were starting from scratch I might try it. but for the few extra HP over my indy 1s just not worth it.

Max effort W5 mill can make WAY more than 650. I say that because the one in my ex car made well over 700 on the Dyno and backed it up at the track by going 140 at 3200 pounds and change on S/S springs and a 28 by 10 Dot tire.
That all said, heck yes...W8 has much, much more potential

Yes Matt.... Gregg did his one day magic once again. 2, 2 1/8, 3 1/2 and will start with some bullet mufflers, but plan in the long run to put more exhaust on it. Honestly... we're leaving quite a bit on the table, but should put down some decent power and live a long happy life... of course we tried that route with the W5 crap and ended up pulling it apart all the time anyways Brett shot me a good deal on the top end, so we started building around it. Do I know what I'm doing? Nope!

i would think it's close. my motor made 716 on Brian's dyno. in my car weighing 3050 with me in it i went 9.77 @138.74 and that was with 12% converter slippage

In the right hands a W5 can't sniff within' 200+hp of a W8.

Yes and this car went 9.62 at 140 and change at about 3220. And that's using a 727. Easily making over 700

Re: W8'ing is the hardest part.... - 06/13/14 10:40 PM

Our W5 was certainly not a "max'ed" effort and netted us a 9.86 @ 138 once. Good mph, but the car wasn't 60fting worth a darn. Car wasn't legal and the shift point was set quite low for the combo when my dad was wheeling it. It's caged and will have all the equipment to get certed legal so we'll see where it goes from there.... better ways to invest go fast money? sure... but it's the path I chose so I'll go with it!

Re: W8'ing is the hardest part.... - 07/25/14 03:51 PM

made it home wednesday night hauling 773hp@7k/650 torque in the back of the ole Dodge. I'll have to come up with a pulley and alternator. Add some fore/aft limiters and we should be pretty close to hauling it to a track. It's so dang hot in the garage so it's hard to get my butt out there to do any work this time of year.

Thank you Brian and Fred Hafliger (IMM Engines) for screwing this thing together.

Thank you Brett Miller.... didn't have a clue who he was, but after my W5 disappointment I was talking to Jesse and he urged me to call Brett as he knew he had a top end laying around. Made the call, and away we went!

Thank you Brian Smith for coming up with some key pieces which were slowing my progress down to a standstill. The waterpump spacers and motor plate for the belt drive were perfect!!

Can't wait until this fall when it cools and I can get this package sorted out. It's going to be fun I'm thinking!

We have had this argument before...but a max effort W5 makes way more than 650.... easily over 700....... again 3220 weight 140 mph on stock suspension with a 727 is well over 700......oops...its the same thread....lol

Very nice! I saw the pics and video on IMM's facebook page. Brian and his Dad are great! They did the BB for my project.

I'm with you on the heat. I'm lucky to work 2nd shift, so I get out in the garage at 6:00am. Still been in the 90's that early, but I can get a couple of hours in before work.

Again, she's a beauty and should a lot of fun. Good luck with it!

Re: W8'ing is the hardest part.... It's alive! - 07/26/14 04:11 PM

436 cubic inches. Ported Mopar 598 intake, W8 heads courtesy of Mr. Miller..flow 400+ on the two different benches they've been on. 9.20 R3 block. Molnar 4" crank and gm rods. Kevco aluminum rear sump pan. Compression ended up around 13.5-1 and we'll be running VP C12 fuel. After a long search a usable cam core was finally found at Crane. The grind ended up 264-272 @ .050 .750 lift at the retainer. Pretty stable combo that should provide lots of trouble free runs without a ton of babysitting. All the dyno runs were with a quickfuel 1050 carb, but I'll be running our old 1050 on it from our W5 mill. The combo was not set on "kill"... when I race it's mostly brackets so in all an engine of the magnitude is not necessary..... but it will be FUN and that's what I'm looking forward to! Get it sorted out and I may look at some index racing.

Old Craftsman truck stuff. Had to have spacers made to fit 9.20 deck block. Not the prettiest, but will do nicely.

Nice set up... no reason to set it on kill... I never
put a big enough cam in mine to make the HP but still
ran high 8s... and I didnt do dick to it for maintenance
EDIT
but mine was a lowly W-9
