Transmission Flair up - 05/30/14 02:51 AM

Ok guy's I have a small problem I have been chasing
for a few weeks now, and can't seem to find the problem.
the transmission in the car works flawles, but ever now
and then it will flair in low gear before the shift, it has
happened twice and cost me the rd win, once was in the semi's
with 3 cars left, and last weekend in the 4th rd, never seems
to be in the same spot, but always before the 2nd gear shift,
I have had the trans out and looked it over, and just can't
seem to find anything to point a finger at, as to what is
causing it to happen, this is just something it has started doing
this season, I need to fix this problem before to long, as
I am leading the points chase at the track, and just can't
be giving rds back because of something of this nature,
so if anyone has any suggestions, please throw them my way,
and let;s see if we can solve this little problem.

Thanks

Dave

Hey Dave can you explain a little more in details? does it pull after the flair up or what?
It seems like its happening after you have a few passes on it.are you sure its not overheating? check cooler and make sure its not plugged..

What valvebody? Low band apply in 1st? Over-running clutch condition?

That's my thought, if no LBA the sprag might be slipping just before the 1-2 shift.

Re: Transmission Flair up - 05/31/14 12:59 PM

Sorry guy's for not posting sooner, been having
computer problems, have had the transmission out, and
apart, cannot see or find anything out of the ordinary,
as being the problem, the line pressure is 155 lbs, and the
valve body is a turbo action with a brake, but I don't use
the brake, no lba, when the problem occurs, it flairs so
fast the air shifter will shift the transmission into
2nd gear, you're a sitting duck then,it still pulls when it shifts,
and there is no consistent time it does it, but it seems
to happen when it starts to get some heat in the traansmission,
but it never gets over 200 degrees, I am baffales as to what is causing this problem, it is something that has just started happening
recently, out of ideas?????????????

I just went thru a similiar problem. My car 60ft great but slipped or flared up on the 1-2 shift. Trans checked good, ended up being the converter. Sent in to ATI and they said only good piece was the back plate.

If your not using LBA and it is definitely only happening in 1st gear there can be only one cause of slippage. The low roller isn't holding. In low the only hydraulically applied component is the direct(back) clutch. It is applied in all forward gears. I doubt if it would slip in 1 gear only.

Quicktree, it acts just like it is slipping, when it happens
it hits the shift chip, and shifts the transmission, doesn't
do this all the time just ocasionally, never the same place
in the track, but both times it has been in low gear when it happens,
the 1st time it happened I thought maybe there was something
on the track, that the starting line crew just missed to clean up,
but the second time it was out past the 60' clocks, last weekend,
after it acted up, I went 2 more rds and it was fine, worked
perfect, no idea what is taking place yet, baffled over the deal,
but I need to figure out what is goin on.

Hello Jim, was you're problem every pass or just
occasional ? Mine is only every now and then, just
don't know when it is goin to happen, both times it has happened
it has never actually reached the point on the track
for the 1st to 2nd gear shift, it's just like it spins the
tires, and hits the shift chip, and shifts the transmission.

Re: Transmission Flair up - 05/31/14 04:02 PM

Started last year slowly getting worse. 2 weeks ago I'd launch the car makle the 1-2 shift and the shift light would never go out, converter was slipping too much. The trans was making the shifts converter slipping. ET and MPH not matching with 60ft.

Check the valve body, especially the check balls. Look at the separator plate for excessive coining where they seat on the plate. Check the check balls for any signs of wear.

What revision TA brake? 17998-4, -5, -6, or -7, and the newest 17999. Some have reported cracks in the transfer channel casting due to machining mods. Here are some pics of the internals -

http://www.turboaction.com/frame.html

scroll down and find Technical Tips, and then the second grouping of links shows drawings of the internals.

Bottom line - high probability it is either the over-running clutch or the converter.

My thinking is, if it were the converter, it would also flare up before the 2-3 shift...only sooner.

Re: Transmission Flair up - 06/04/14 02:04 AM

ok guy's here's an update, as I said I could not
find anything that looked to be the culprit, causing
the problem, so put it back in the car, went to the races
this past weekend, made 2 time trials, and 4 rds and the
transmission performed flawless, was it something I replaced
in it while it was apart, I don't think so, all I replaced was the
o-ring on the front pump, time will tell if the problem is
cured, but I feel better about it than before, now I have to fix
a pan leak I have created by being in a hurry to get things
buttoned up, but that ain't no biggie. Thanks for all the
advice we will see how it goes, and btw I still am holding
on to the points lead, gonna dig in and see if I can win this
deal again this year.

Thanks
Dave
