ignition choice for 505 big block?

ignition choice for 505 big block? - 04/19/14 05:17 AM

I'm putting together a max wedge motor for my 64 Polara A stroked 440 to 505 cubes. I have a mopar electronic ignition. My plan was to find a siver box. The gold one is to high performance I was told. Then I was advised to get the Revonator box instead of the silver mopar one. Revenator is advertised in Mopar Collectors Guide. It has a rev limiter. I heard they run hot though. I guess I want to pick the right ignition set up only once. Should I use the Orange Box,silver box? Get a Revenator box to go with my electronic mopar ignition? Or my last choice was an MSD ignition set up.What MSD set up is good? This is going to be a 9.5 to 1 compression solid lifter motor. So I don't want to just get by. I want a good setup to get all potential out of the engine. Thanks in advance.

I prefer to get rid of all of the old mopar crap that will leave you stranded and isn't nearly as good as a modern msd.
Just get a msd 6al and be done with it.
Better starting, will run more crisp, and less likely to leave you on stranded in a parking lot somewhere. You'll never regret it.

If you go with MSD you can get parts from most any
guy at the track if you have a break down... I bought
a OFF brand and it didnt last a week end at the track..
I went to MSD after that... the first few years I ran
the gold box(MP) and it ran fine... but hard to find
parts at the track

I use a MSD 6al and a MSD billet distributor. MSD launch control. Works for me.

Rev-A-Nator sounds pretty cool. I think I am going to get one. Looks like they are all backordered though.

Go to the track and see what everyone runs... that
will tell you a lot... they run it for a reason... and
thats not being a so called follower... they have very
few failures and the parts are easy to find at the track
EDIT
At 9.5 compression I think its a street car that will
make a few passes... if I'm correct use the 6AL or
7AL... or keep the MP unit... but have a ballast in
the glove box

I've been running a Mallory HyFire VI-AL # 6853M with their recommended coil and 32 series distributor. Installed it about 8-10 years ago and basically forgot about it! Never a problem from any of those components. Of course, they have variety of other VI and VII series boxes to choose from as well.

I've been using MSD stuff since the late 70's and have yet to be disappointed.
Like Mr. P sez.......look around the track and see what is working for others.
My latest is a 6 AL 2 programmable and I haven't lit it up yet , but it has way more features than I have a use for.
I went this way over a regular 6 AL so I could map the ignition curve with a locked distributor , but this thing has enough limits and retards to do pretty much anything you would want to without going up to the top shelf of ignitions.

Just picked up a 7al3 analog and an HVC 2 coil 8261 trying to decide if I want to send it back and go digital / programmable

Its tuff to beat MSD. It gives you multi spark and helps keep the plugs cleaner. That said I still run the MP orange box on my 63. I bought the box in 1998 and it has been flawless since then. But from what I hear the newer orange boxes give alot of trouble. We took this orange box and Acell coil off my sons Dart and put MSD on it in 2006 and his Dart ran the same et and started and idled the same. But I would still rather go with an MSD box and plan to when I get the cash. Course this orange box works fine and never misses a beat for me shifting at 6200. My dist is a Mallory electronic unit which works very good and I like it alot. I use a stock dist on my boys car with the MSD. And like was said you can get MSD parts just about anywhere. So I have no complaints with my orange box but do plan to go to MSD when I can. Ron

I use a simple Mopar distributor setup with no vac advance and a chrome box.

10.4/1 470".

No problems

I think you can still get the chrome box at a dodge dealer.

This is all you need for what your doing. The rev a nator can be swapped in as well$$$ for double the price. Not sure you need it for just a few hp.

I use the rev a nator on my 505 and cant complain of how it preform and a great benefit is of corse the built on rev limiter that WORK ! Had a new MSD soft cut rev limiter before whit a no good orange MP box and that limiter whent in the trash as it dident work together whit no good MP box. I gues you can reed some testīs where they compared the AL6 box to the rev a nator and diside for your self whitch to pick Im afraid you will end up whit recomedations of useing retrackted race plugs to in the heat range around 8 if you askt that to in a topic that i gues works fine if you only intend to rev the engine above 7000 rpm at the track but they will most likely not give you what you whish on the street if you even come out to the street before the plugs are shut down IMO Spend money whit respect and reed betwen the lines some times is my experience.
