B-Body Battery in Trunk - 04/15/14 04:46 AM

Can anyone tell me what kit they used to put the battery in the trunk? The battery that you used and some pictures would be nice. I'd like to run a really large AGM or Optima of some sort.

How about two?
Tray was fabbed from 1/2 angle. Hold downs were 1/2 angle aluminum.

Just my opinion, but I'd opt to leave it under the hood and use a lightweight modern battery instead.

The weight of 20-50ft of 1/0 cable certainly adds up. Also, consider the aggravation of voltage drop, high resistance grounds, hot start issues, cable routing, and the real potential for meltdown failure with 25ft of constantly hot line running under the carpet day and night.

If you do choose the trunk route, figure out your total maximum potential amperage load first. You will probably need larger capacity wire than what is provided with most cheapo kits.
ECU, injectors, fans, pumps, stereo, headlights, horn, tailights, domelight, A/C, signals, markers, brake lights, 12v acc, oxygen sensors, ect.

Since mine is a street car I mounted mine in a plastic marine case. That way any thing I put in the trunk does not get any battery acid on it. Ron

Then I mounted my cut out switch on the case. And since I did not want to drill any holes in the car I drilled a hole in the taillite lens. That way if I ever put it back to stock I only have to replace the taillite lens. Ron

Here is my "kit"...lol

I took the battery tray from the front, and bolted it to the floor.

Two 3/8" rods through the floor with a simple strap at the top... done.

Used a Summit kit #SUM-G2131-K and Flaming River kit #FLA-FR1003-2.

The exact position of the battery changes your weight distribution (duh), but also your weight transfer.
The distribution: weight directly over the axle is 100% (the actual battery weight) on the rear wheels, and nothing on the front.
As the same weight moves back toward the bumper, the rear weight goes up (over 100%) and cantilevers weight off the front wheels. If hung on a tray out the back, a 100 lb. battery could add 200 lbs. etc.

The transfer: The distance between the axle center and the battery affects how quickly the car rotates around the axle on launch - greater distance (high polar momentum) slows down rotation. This is both front-to-back, but also height - the box can be raised so that the trunk lid just closes.

Expect to observe and tweak your suspension setting as needed.

Even though its just a street / strip car, I wanted it to be fully legal. So, I used a sealed & vented Taylor battery box. Shutoff is a Summit 250 amp waterproof rotary switch.

Put a big bottle in the trunk! Much better performance than just swapping the battery back there...

I was waiting for someone to ask as I know they say the right side is best. But I only had enough cable to reach to the left side and I really dont think I would have noticed any difference on the right side. I mean this has worked fine for me and I did not have to buy anymore cable. When cash is tight you improvize.

Thats really a nice battery box but not cheap. So thats why I used the marine case as it was given to me for free but the one you use is the one I plan to get one day. Ron

I'm with you, Ron.... Budget plays a big part in most decisions on the car. But what I didn't want was to go to the track and be told to go home because I wasn't legal.
