Thoughts on max wedge ported stock castings

Thoughts on max wedge ported stock castings - 12/28/08 08:24 PM

Ive run into a semilocal set of stock BB castings that have been opened up to mw size. I really havent paid any attention to the stock castings with MW size runners before. Do the MW size ports on stock castings hurt low lift flow? Do they increase high lift flow that much or is the benefit in intake selection? Any thoughts appreciated.

Are we talking about stock Max Wedge Cast heads, or later 906/452 heads that has been opended up?

It usually helps the flow of H2O from the water jacket into the intake or exhaust ports. Did in my case

I did a set for myself years and years ago, back in 1991.
I used a 906 casting, and opened it up to max wedge and ran it as high as I could go to right before the spring seat area. Then tapered it down from there.
It made quite a bit of difference. I just cut the ports off of a stock valley pan and silicon'd the edges to the intake manifold. I used an M1 that I also raised the roof all the way into the plenum.
It was alot of work, but in my Charger it picked up 3.5 tenths...and I did mill the heads down from 85cc to 82cc so it wasn't all head work.
This was an 800DP on a flattappet 440.
Car weighted in at 3820lbs. with me!!
It went from 11.72 to 11.38 with only those mods.

Von, be very careful on buying a used set of ported 906 to M.W. intake port size. It is very easy to mess those heads up trying to make them better,(to many valve jobs, cut in the wrong places and so on ) if you really want them take them to a reputable machine shop with a good flow bench and have them tested, post the results on here before buying them to see what the knowleagable head guys on here think of those flow #s first before buying for the heads

Cab , has some good advice Id stay away from those heads unless they were really cheap. Even then, Id be afraid of those heads. As in maybe cracking and hydraulicing your motor.

Imo opening up a 906 head to MW size wont make it Flow any better numbers. But that doesnt mean it wont make the car run any faster as it will have extra port volume.

The choker on the 906 port isnt the opening its the inner throat and short turn. That will dictate the max airflow not the size of the port opening. Whether it be OE or MW size.

Also when porting a old OE head the metal fatigues rather quickly with the beating of the grinder burr. The more you grind/port over the same area the more Fragile/fatigued it becomes.

If you want to see how fragile these OE steel cast heads are. Take a Small ballpeen hammer and start swinging away.

You can bust these cast steel heads to bits, no problem. A over ported port will not only be thin but also serverly fatigued IMO mike

That was pretty much my first thought way back when...but to my surprise the port picked up 12 cfm at .500 lift!
And it slowed the air down and helped the port hang on better above .550 lift.
