when or how often should you change rod ends? metal fatigue or wear factors, stress etc. is there any way to tell when they should be changed other than failure?

You can feel the ball getting sloppy in the housing...
if you clean and lube them you can get years out of them

Clean them with brakeclean and if the center just flops around in the socket replace them if they feel snug they are still good.

What's the best way to lube them?

And the best lube?

I use lithium spray white grease once clean... and if
they are out then I rotate the ball.. if not I spray
the heck out of them

Thanks. I was wondering if you could use something like machine way-oil you know, something that would cling to it. Spray lithium should work good though, being it comes out of the can more liquid like and under pressure.

I usually get a few runs out of mine but when I make one of those elusive 4 sec. runs I like to change them before the next round just in case of excessive vibrations that might weaken the integrity of the metal I look forward to seeing the BigDog and Special Kay soon!!

A man of knowledge,I thought you only did transmissions! Ha ha, Hope to see you soon! My rod ends are solid, the thought was just fatigue of metal. at stress point, just trying to be safe, getting to old to get hurt, lost an end on ladder bar car once in top end shut down, was not easy to control even though the safty strap cought it.

The success of a fourlink is that the energy is dispersed to the 4 forward ends where as a ladder bar is all concentrated at the two front ends. There are also different quality(strength)of ends that can be purchased.

You can get rubber dust boots for 'em. I think Speedway has them, keeps.the lube in and the dirt out.

If youre not running the dust boots, do NOT lube them. Unless your track has zero dust/debris(Ive never seen one), the lube will attract any and all dust/dirt and cling to them.
As for life, it all depends on how much power you are hitting them with, and what quality of rod ends you are using. In our car with 1280 lbs of torque, we replace them every 2 seasons. I promise, its cheap insurance...last thing you want is a heim letting go.
