Hemi guys...Barton SP Intake to Indy 426-1 heads qun - 04/05/14 06:46 AM

Hey guys - quick qun.

Will this intake OOTB bolt up to a the Indy 426-1 heads? Are they a bolt on deal?

Im looking to run a shorter intake over an Indy 426-4 for hood clearance but after sitting this thing on the block there is a gap of 15.5mm b/w the top of the block and the bottom of the valley plate !! What gives?

Any advice would be much appreciated thx !

It requires Indy valley plate or similar to seal since the Indy ports are higher.

The big supprize here is that an american guy have figured out that the metric system is the way to go!

Haha nice !

BG - I had the Indy valley plate on the engine with teh In 426-4 intake.

But that Barton intake has a valley plate already cast into it. I tried but he Barton intake wont mount to the engine with the Indy valley plate in place and besides, why would you do that when the Barton piece has the valley plate cast into the manifold.?

Confused .....

In my opinion, I see three options (lowest cost first)

1: Cut the cast-in valley plate off of the Barton intake

2: Buy an Indy intake

3: Buy Stage V heads and use the Barton intake

I'm thinking you should countersink the screw holes in the Indy valley plate so you can use flat head screws to hold it down and make the seal needed. If needed, mill a little off the top of the plate if it hits the intake anywhere or have a custom plate made up. I think AndyF makes a billet plate that might be thinner than the cast Indy plate. I wouldn't hack the intake. Sounds like more work than the plate and then you have an intake that only works with those heads. The plates are cheaper than the intake.

It doesn't look like Andy has a Hemi plate, but I'm sure he can fab one up for you. You won't need the access holes for the Hemi, so maybe you can save some money and have him make a one-piece plate.

The cast in place valley plate works with stock intake port height,we use the Indy or similar valley plates on any stock style intake such as X-rams and use the plate under it.You can also make spacers for the end rails,we have done this on blower manifolds and Indy raised port heads.You can tap the block rail and countersink the holes in the spacers and use capscrews to attach.Add a thin bead of silicone to the block side attach the spacer,silicone the manifold side and be good to go.

There is more than one way to skin a cat but always start with a dead cat.

How much is 15.5 mm? If it is 1/4 in or less just use weather stripping?

15.5mm is well over a 1/2"

Indy plate measures aprox.1/2" ,countersink the 6 holes and use capscrews and you will have a gap under the manifold.

The double valley plate deal works and is the easiest way to solve the problem. I've used my valley plates that way before. The other option is to build some custom valley ends. It isn't too tough of a fab job for a local machine shop.

Thanx for the input fellas - I thought I may go with the fabbed spacers but upon reflection, its prob better to go the route BG suggested and go the double valley late.

As I dotn want to have to remove the Indy plate to swap intakes(to do it you have to remove at least one head), if I reuse the Indy valley plate and use countersunk bolts, itll be easier for me to swap b/w the Barton intake and the Indy 426-4 intake as the Indy plate sits below both heads on the deck and cant be removed with both heads on.

Here's another pic of the gap and the Indy Valley plate. For those who want to know, the Valley plate has two diff thicknesses at its end as cast/machined. 0.44" (11mm) and 0.23" (6mm) mm as can be seen in the pic.

If it was me, I'd cut the valley plate off the Barton manifold and just use the Indy plate. That way you could switch back and forth no problem. You may have to mill the bottom of the intake flange a little.
The Barton manifold would still work w/ non-Indy heads and the Indy valley plate.

Mine has the valley pan / plate removed and an aluminum sheet metal pan installed . Straight from RBRE .
