Edelbrock RPMs and Hooker Comp Fit.

Edelbrock RPMs and Hooker Comp Fit. - 03/10/14 08:20 PM

I've got the Hooker Competition headers PN 5903, 1 and 7/8" on a 440 with 452 iron heads in a 1967 Satellite with manual steering and 727, and ministarter.

I'm thinking of upgrading to some Edelbrock RPM heads. I know I will have to ding a couple header tubes for spark plug clearance. I'm fine with that.

The collectors used to rattle into the torsion bars at idle and drive me crazy until I did some mods to my X pipe that pulled the collectors in toward the center of the car and away from the torsion bars when the collectors are bolted to the X pipe.

What I'm wondering about is do the RPMs push the collectors of the Hooker Competition 5903 headers out towards the torsion bars more than with stock heads? Thanks for any insight you can give me.

Jon, I can't say weather the Eddys will change anything, it may change something minutely which may be enough to aggravate your issue.

I can tell you that I have a '67 Satellite with a 440 and the Hooker Comps. I don't have a torsion bar issue, although they are close, but mine rattles on my steering column. I need to fix it and am taking my headers out in the next couple of weeks to hit it with a BFH.

I don't have the issue with hitting the steering but I bought mine used with some existing dings. Now you are making me wonder if I would have enough space and leverage to ding the underside of the tubes with the headers still in the car.

I had the Edelbrock RPMs with the 1- 7/8 Super comps.....even with dinging the tubes it constantly burnt boots (I believe on #2).

I changed to TTI's soon after for that reason.

My understanding is the 2" super comps work better, as well as the regular hooker comps are supposed to work ok too.

You may, my problem is where I need to dent the header tube. Its on the number one primary right after the 90 degree angle where it turns downwards. My engine shakes a lot at idle which makes it worse.

I guess the main thing I'm wondering is if the Edelbrock RPMs are wider from intake gasket face to header gasket face and if so, how much wider? And if they are wider, how much of a problem does it cause for Hooker 1 and 7/8" PN 5903 Comps to fit? Like does it spread where the collectors end up wider so they run into the torsion bars more?
