This Camshaft Or That One ? - 03/03/14 08:32 PM

Guy's, I Have A Original,44,000 mile B.B. 400 In Great Condition. I Have Replaced The Heads With A Pair Of 516's That Have Been Slightly Ported, Have 2.08/1.74 Valves,& measure to 72cc's. Pistons are .100 in the hole, & am using .020 steel shim gaskets. compression should be about 9to1 ?headers,750 Holley V.C. on performer Intake. was going to use a compcam 275DEH..462/.482 219/235@.050.110LS But I Was Givin A Summit Cam # 6401. .466/.488 224/234@.050 114LS.very close Lift/Duration, what will the wider LS do or not do ? engine will be in a '68 Dart with auto, stock convertor, 3.55 gears, street driven until 470 is built. 1 to 1.5 years.

Go with the 110LSA.

I don't usually say this, but the Summit cam will work in your combo. Slightly longer intake duration somewhat softened by the wider LSA. There are better cams, but there' not 4100 worth of difference between the two you mention.

I think the wider lobe separation would be better with a stock converter. It should have a better idle quality and increased vacuum signal at idle.

Go with this one....it's a GREAT BBM cam for a warmed over 383-400 or as a 440 six pack replacement:

Great all around power, revs strong and pulls higher than the lobe specs might lead you to believe.

These are very popular cams these days

Neither cam is ideal in my opinion. I think i would run the summit cam.

call Hughes---- the best in Mopar cams--ALSO-- they have new "whiplash " cams that are specifically made for low comp, big block chrysler. what else could you ask for ?

A low compression motor like a stock 400 with those heads needs all the help it can get down low like you need The closer lobe center with the exact same cam lobes will build better HP an torque below 5000 PM Make sure and degree the cam in, do not align the dots and hope Advance that rascal 4 to 6 degrees, 106 to 104 intake lobe center after top dead center, and hold on

The LSA for any motor is vaguely a fixed number, determined by valve to cube size , head flow at overlap and compression ratio. (The duration sets the rpm range) The lower the compression, the narrower. The smaller the intake valve to displacement equals narrower yet. Probably the best cam would be cut somewhere around 106! And maybe narrower than that for max performance. That gets you an early closing intake valve to trap the charge early and more overlap to scavange the huge 8/1 compression chamber.
An example is the 590 lift cam, which has a 107 LSA, and some guys run them installed as early as 100 degrees. That cam works quite well for its age, and makes decent power in low compression motors. It is a 40 plus year old design.
If it were me, I would sell both and get a cam more suited to what you have. You won't be sorry.

Light car with a tight stock converter favors a bit wider seperation.

The Crower 32242 I mentioned is factory cut on 112 in at 107 perfest for a small tire stockish nose heavy A body....but you can get it cut 108 and I put it in at 105. Hank (mopork) and others had that cam in his 71' Coronet cop car and loved it.

The crower will sound at idle like a street hemi but have very strong but predictable and (most importantly) Tractible power in an A body and won;t be upset with a tight-ish converter. Crower hydraulic lifter are also cut for the .904 lifter (years before most others did it) and the lobes work very well with very broad powerbands.
