I recently read an article online about a 440 build that was going to use a retro roller conversion. Landy told the builders that a 440 block requires to many oiling system mods to use hydraulic roller lifters. I dont know any mods that would have to be done...
it has the oil galley for the lifters... most you would
LIKE to do is bushings in the lifter bores but not a
mandatory thing... I'm sure one of the guys that has
done it will chime in

Someone who's done it will have the answers.... I'm immagining that the height of the lifter body may not jive with the oil galley, which would be required for pressurizing the lifter.

Why go to a hydraulic roller? Cost vs. advantage is not worth it to me. A flat tappet solid will out-perform a hydraulic roller, and be much more reliable... Just sayin'.

No idea what Landy is talking about, a hyd roller setup works just fine in a big block Mopar. Perhaps it was a special racing situation or something where bolt on parts weren't going to work.

I had a Crane Hyd roller in my 440 & it worked fine. My bro had the
same cam in his 440 & had issues with a valve tip breaking after
about a year. ALmost dropped a valve & it might be that the builder
didn't install a cam button.

Don't know if it's true with a hyd roller but with a solid roller my experience was that you had to run a solid body lifter or you would lose oil pressure when the "cut-out" on the lifter came up out of the lifter bore...didn't realize what i had done and ran it that way for a season with low idle oil pressure, put solid body comps in the next season and oil pressure went back to normal, only then did I figure out what I had done.

The lift is usually limited because of the oil galley thing, typically at around 0.54" with 1.5 rockers.

Not really sure either, what Landy would be concerned with in this type of application. ...I've got quite a few of them out there running just fine.

At the time that article was published, I don't remember there being commonly availalbe hydraulic roller lifters for BB Mopars. Most of the "retro-fit" hyd. rollers for Mopars came out years later.

Andy, you are on to something in your last statement of your post. Could be that the lifters were not Mopar spec' back then in Landys'
heyday? The lift factor with the early heads as well as the slow popularity of running roller cams vs. solids back then? And a lot of oiling system parts were developed then to better the 4-5 quart pan/oiling system found on most factory performance RB motors (save for Max Wedge), which may have carried over from the HEMI engine. Food for thought And.. "The Times, They Are a Changing" and have changed...BUT not by much!!

Unfortunately, Landy's advice in the later years was often for the birds. His column in one of the Mopar magazines was usually good for a laugh.

WOW! I would hope you are judging as you would want to be judged.

I typically am harsh while one is alive and able to defend ones self. After someone passes I always see them for who they actually were. If I can find nothing good to say about them I'll say nothing. Dick Landy is not a foot note to the MOPAR history but an entire chapter, He is also one who is noted throughout the MOPAR book and in other legends chapters as well. Don't go chopping at his achievements so you will feel taller next to them, GET TO ACHIEVING!!

Landy's advice might have been about using factory SB lifters in a BB, the oil groove being exposed at max lift is a known issue with some lifters.

That article was from 2003, and I don't recall anyone selling a retro-fit hydraulic roller type lifter back then? I have the Comp XE286HR Hydraulic roller in mt 505" stroked 440, and haven't had any issues with it.

either run pushrod oiling or OEM rocker oiling dont run both

On this subject. Any concerns with the howards retro rollers for the b/rb?

It might have just been typical Landy mumble jumble used to confuse the magazine guys so he could get an advantage. Looks like it worked, Landy was able to run a solid roller and the other guys had to run hyd roller cams.

If a world championship was on the line then Landy would've bushed the block and run Chevy hyd roller lifters in a heartbeat.
