Started my Indy intake mods for this years engine - 02/15/14 01:35 AM

I received the Indy intake last Saturday that I bought from a member and I started grinding away last night and a few hours today. This one is going on MY 408 engine that is on the engine stand now. I ported on for a Friends engine last year and he never tried it yet but it looked real promising on the flow bench. I have 4 ports roughed in and the plenum and dominator spacer should be finished tomorrow and I hope to have it on the bench this weekend. Here are a few pictures of the progress. I still have to lay out the holes and redrill it for the Edelbrock bolt pattern.

Lookin good..............that`s a LOT of work porting these things heads included but the pay off is doin it yourself and reaping the power potential..........

I really enjoy it but I'm glad I don't have to rely on it for a living. Lots of hard tedious work. I worked on this from 2pm to 10:20pm and thru it on the bench for some numbers. I'm hungry.

Sorry Mike I just came in from the shop. I bought this intake on Moparts Feb 3 and this is how it was listed.

I jump on Indys site to look it up to make sure it was the same as the one I did for my Friend and it was. I stuck it on the flow bench tonight and checked number three port as number 3 and 6 were the hardest to get good number on my buddies. Low and high number were ok but I have more work to do to bring up the mid lift numbers. Here are some flow number with a 2.08 valve Edelbrock head. Airspeed is still high in this head but there's only so much metal to work with where you start with a 177cc casting. Stock with a 2.02 valve it maxed out at 243cfm@.700

As you can see the intake actually helped at .700 lift. I think the extra volume in the Indy intake slows the airspeed down some and calms the head. On my buddies we hit 317-318cfm on some of the other runners. More work later this weekend.

That sure dont look like any W-2 I know of... I guess
it doesnt matter if your changing the port shape..
all the W-2s I know of had oval ports

Here's a couple of pictures of the port opened up and the little modifying needed to an Edelbrock intake gasket. I have to tig weld the adapter in a couple of spots so I can taper it more.

Got ya... I was thinking there was a big difference
in the intake to head(air was crashing into the head)

Looks good. Keep us posted. I did one of these for myself awhile back, mines the oval port, yours looks like it was leaving even more on the table!

Would you have done the dividers the same if you weren't running the 4500 adapter?

Yes on the dividers especially on the inside port runners. When I did my Friends Ryan (Shadydale) modified the bolt pattern and ran a cutter into the head mating exit. from there I gasket matched it and did some flow testing. The inside runners were REAL disappointing so I started working the plenum to unsheild the entrance. The more I cut the more it picked up. Now being it was a Friends intake I wasn't going crazy hogging it out but kept testing. He just dropped it off again as he wants a 1 inch spacer matched. The manifold is pretty high to start with but his reasoning is is easy now, before he puts it on. I will will be testing this season with pump gas, alcohol, and also a throttle stop for some 10.90 racing. Before I'm done playing with Edelbrock heads I will bush the pushrod tube and totally remove the pinch on a test head I have to see if its worth while. I'm loving the 306@600 lift flow but there may be more left.

I have been wondering about those same areas on my Indy small block intake as well


By the way John, very nice work on yours! I notice you really got down into the plenum- what is the benefit of flattening those walls out like that? (hopefully I am making sense lol)

Thanks Matt. At that point the only port really shaped in enough was #3 and I just wanted to get some numbers to sleep on as I will be spending lots of time clearing snow from my driveway. Warm-up coming this week and I want to get the Duster home hopefully next Sunday. I flatten the walls and will be playing with some different shapes to get some needed volume to help slow the head speed down some. I will try to get 10-15 more cfm in the mid lifts. 3 and 6 are a struggle as they have to navigate the pinch on the short runners. I'm glad I don't have to pay myself by the hour.

My intake is already port matched, but I was thinking about doing some plenum work to it....The question Jeremiah brought up and seeing your pictures has made me curious to the benefits (if any) of the stock opening vs. how you are flattening and angling the plenum entry area.

In you case with the Indy head I can't tell you how it will respond or if its needed as much. The Edelbrock head is so volume limited you will get one area slowed down and then the next limited area needs work. I haven't cc'd one in a long time but I will on this set of heads to check port volume. I am then going to pour a mold for later reference. If you check out my flow numbers check out .700 lift and you can see how the intake helped. If you never made a mold of a port do it sometime as its very interesting what you can see. I have a website saved from the place I buy the mold compound if you are interested. What cc head did you end up getting?

I have never even heard of pouring a mold of a port..have a link to the site that sells the stuff?

My heads are the 360-2 230's (CNC)

Mshred, this is a picture of my Indy intake that Brett Miller ported for a Engine Masters motor that I now have with the 360-2 heads. He also put a adapter for a 1050 Dom. on it. But it is a 4 hole adapter.

If those Eddies's you did go down the track like those stout flow numbers suggest, those airwolf type heads wouldn't be worth fooling with.

I would still like to do a set. The floor is about the only place left to work on. I know I'm safe but its a real hard area to sonic check. From what Dr. j says they filled the floor some on the procomps.

Damn, Brett does NICE work! It would seem based on the way he shaped yours that it might be a good idea to leave mine alone instead of flatten/straighten like John has with his for the eddy heads..with 230cc's I would imagine that shape helps
